Frazier may turn out to be surprise of year

Guy is physically imposing...Nothing like having a quick/fast 260 pounder coming out of the backfield. Plus he has showed that he can play the DE role effectively. As the young DEs mature Frazier is a great alternative in the rotation.

I hope to see more of him as the season progresses.

I think he is already in the top 3 in that category at this point in the season. He has become a difference maker at FB which is not easy to do and has shown remarkable adaptability to so quickly (within 1 week) be a contributor on the other side of the ball.

I like the idea of him helping our running game, especially blocking in red zone offense.

He's faster than I thought he would be. Really a pleasant surprise. I like that coaches are just trying to get him on the field as much as they can. He appears to be a play-maker and gamer.

Frazier is one of those gems that HCMM has been able to find. He is playing solid at DE, may not be making huge plays but when he is in we are not dropping off which is huge. Especially considering he started practicing at DE 2 weeks ago. His play at TE is also pretty impressive considering he has been a FB since the beginning of fall camp. If we can get consistant play from the OL the "Power I" with him and Powell would be physically punishing on whatever DL we play. I hope he can stay healthy and keep up this level of play. He is a good one.

Big George looked good Saturday. I was surprised how fluid he looked catching the ball on the TD. He was a prototypical Macintyre recruit--big and athletic--just took some time to find a place (places?) for him.

He was an Embree recruit.

Yep commited to Embree, stayed despite coaching change. However he was recruited as an ILB. HCMM is putting him in positions where he can succeed.

maybe let him take a short snap on some of those goal line situations we are struggling in this year?

George was one of the Embree recruits that was also strongly recruited by SJSU. They knew him very well.

Watching the broncos game yesterday where they flipped the shuttle pass to Thomas for the TD in the red zone.... I actually stated right before that play they should run it NOW. After watching the beauty of it I thought that big George (or even Powell) would be ideal for that play.

That demonstrates to me the comparative competence level between the 2 staffs. Frazier as an LB? He's quick for his size, but we need much more speed in that position to play in the PAC12. No wonder we looked so slow during JE's tenure...he didn't know how to build a PAC12 team.

This also shows this staff's ability to spot talent under the radar, as apparently they were recruiting him when they were at SJSU.

I know some people bitch about the recruiting here, but I think Mac is the right guy for the job, because we're not going to get competitive competing for 4-5* - we will get competitive by spotting missed 3* talent and coaching them up.

The short snap play is rarely successful. I know it worked with Pow against ASU, but it's a numbers game. You have 11 defenders. Giving the ball to the up-back makes in an 11 on 9 proposition. It works if you can catch them off-guard, but most of the time, it's a low return play.

PA, PA, PA. I'm sick of not seeing it just trying force a run up the middle and Frazier's TD was a decent use of a similar formation (honestly can't remember if it was a PA or a HB drag). Unless I'm just not seeing it, I think we would be much more successful mixing in a higher percentage of PA passes. There were multiple situations in each game where an audible to a PA pass (either, TE leak, FB/HB in the flats) could have been great just keep the D on their toes. If Frazier continues to grow then I could see some inventive play calls and formations used.

Agree.

One point of debate, though: does "play action" work when the defense doesn't respect the "play" that the "action" develops from?

Remember Cody Hawkins faking the handoff on every play? Yeah, I remember that, too.

Where I'd like to see some play action is when we're trying to close out a game. Everybody knows we're going to run the ball. Go play action. If the receiver is wide open, make the pass. If he's not, take off with the ball and try to make something out of it. Either way, you're ahead of where you'd be if you simply handed the ball off for the RB to bang into 8 guys.

I believe it would if the correct play was called with enough variation in routes, etc. Often times if the D doesn't bite on the PA then the running lanes are still open. This could allow for a HB to slip out of the backfield as a check down or allow for a QB run. It is similar to what happens with a zone read. Needs a solid OL but I think we are developing that a bit.

Agreed. That is where my fustration comes from. Don't try and run up the middle 3 times! Mix in a high percentage PA pass. Doesn't have to be a big play just something to keep the chains moving. D might expect it but they also may let it slip as they game wears on and they get more tired.

Compare and contrast what this staff does with a guy like Frazier, as opposed say, to a guy like Vickers, who spent far too much of his time in Boulder standing next to GB on the sidelines, while Booger was puzzled over when and where to use him.

Love a two way player like him---in the strong tradition of Joe Romig!

Power I with him at FB and Powell at RB. That is about as jumbo as we are going to get back there.

I don't care for that idea with our line. Powell is too slow to the line from the RB position. FB may blast a huge hole and it could be closed again by the time Powell gets there.
