Athlon's Preview checks the Buffs in at #17

That seems high to me we were barely better than that with Spencer healthy last year, we have an unproven point-guard situation and averages less than 1 pt per position without Spencer last year. Teams also have a bit of a book on Scott as seen by what UofA and Pitt did to him.

I think we are going to have a bunch of early season pain unless some one seriously steps up, like Spencer's leap between frosh and soph year. Not what we are projecting from most of our guys.

Nice to see the program getting some respect, but that really sets us up for an early disappointment.

Pretty sure that Lindy's had us at #16.

Conventional wisdom seems to have the Buffs as a Top 20 team this season, finish 2nd or 3rd in the Pac-12.

I can see the Buffs as a top 20 team. We are pretty loaded this year with depth all around. Guys like Fletcher, DT, Hopkins, and Gordon all have that year under their belts. If our 3 point shooting improves and a couple of these guys break out, this will be a tough team to beat.

If I remember correctly, Sporting News had us just outside the top 25 and 3rd or 4th in P12.

I was thinking the 15-20 range is a good expectation. Don't see them getting much higher than that, unless they can win Diamondhead and beat UofA in Tempe.

Edit: Tucson, I meant Tucson

At this point....the accolades are nice and the program is constantly on the radar nationally but the need to finish strong and have a solid conference and postseason is where my focus is at this season.

Since I think the Buffs will finish 2nd or 3rd in the Pac-12 this year, I guess that translates to Top 20 nationally. Honestly, I'm more confident of where we are going to be within the conference than I am on where we are on a national basis. It's not that I'm down on the Pac-12. It's more that we've had so much disappointment in the first round of the NCAAs and with last year's neutral site games (Baylor & Okie Lite). Some of that is just being too close to it, though. I thought teams like Oregon, UCLA and us were ranked too high early in the season last year. But if I'm honest, if I'd seen a B1G or ACC or Big East team with the same resume as any of us had when we were in the Top 25 I would have put them in similar spots without hesitation.

In reality, Top 25 doesn't mean "elite". Top 10 is elite. I don't think CU belongs there. We probably do belong among the next group of teams that are expected to make the Dance and be a threat to go on a decent run, though.

Exactly. Expectations have been set and now it's about time to make a run in the tourney. I think we can do it if we get some consistent outside shooting.

Pussies.

Just kidding. Love being top 20 in the preseason polls, but we've never held a ranking consistently before. I'll believe it when I see it. Aka winning more consistently on the road.

It's a big deal to have the respect preseason to be ranked this high even we have our doubts. If a few games go our way and our formerly young guys have developed, who know, we might be as good or better than the experts think!

When is the AP and Coaches poll supposed to be out? Given that October looks to be a very important recruiting month, I hope our ranking is as high and inflated as possible. Not sure it will help, but definitely won't hurt.

I 100% guarantee that we will not lose to UofA in Tempe this year!!

How could they possibly find 16 teams ahead of us!! Athlon sux! #norespect

Way too high unless dom is the truth

Bull sh*t! Look at the teams ranked above CU up through #9 Are they soooo talented and deep with experienced players? I think not!

Even more than Dom, Miller adds something CU has not had in a while: a aircraft carrier. And he comes in as an almost 20 yr. old FR, (not some 17 YO skinny geek), who practiced and played against top-notch competition in HS, as well as AAU.

OK analysis. Simplistic to just say this team needs to improve perimeter shooting. It's equally important for movement off the ball & with the ball to be improved. Not to mention free throws.

They knock Ski as a shooter but, then say J-HOP/XT need to improve assist/to for Ski to be a shooter. Pretty clear Ski will be the lead-guard.

This team went 9-8 against a stronger P12 & 5 of those L's were to UA/UCLA. With P12 seemingly down as a whole, really only need gradual improvement to solidify a top 3 P12 finish.

But this team is so flush with talent that any number of guys could make the leap & become a rock solid top 20 team.

I believe the AP and Coaches Polls come out in the first week of November. That'll be so cool if we start the season in the Top 25.

Been said over and over, but remains the key. Who's going to make the leap this year? We could live without another giant leap from Jelly, Ski probably gonna Ski... The number of others that step up can swing that ceiling one way or the other a lot.

I'd put money on Fletch taking a big step.

Ski doesn't need to make a big leap, he just needs to be a little more consistent. Same with XJ.

Jelly gon' be Jelly (really ****ing good) but I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up as one of the best bigs in the nation this year and gets drafted.

I agree. I'm expecting Fletcher and Gordon to make the biggest jump. I'm curious to see if DT can get his 3pt stroke together, it would open up his game tremendously.

What about XJ? He could turn a corner, and so could wes - if wes gets his head right this year, watch out. That guy is dangerous when he's confident.

People talking about Wes turning some mythical corner don't get what he's asked to do on this team,IMO. The guy did EXACTLY what he was supposed to do last year, which was take some heat off of Jelly and clean the boards. I'm a big fan of Wes, because he epitomizes Tad Ball. Unselfish team player. I wouldn't expect a ton of points from him, though.
