Turnovers are always important, but may be more important tomorrow

Sefo Liufau is tied for last in the conference with 5 interceptions thrown in the first four games.

Cal is tied for first in the conference with 5 interceptions in their first three games.

Sefo I hope has learned to never throw into triple coverage. IDC how good Spruce is, that is a losing battle every time. Last year the turnovers were even at 1INT a piece. That needs to remain even if we are going to have a shot to pull out the win

I agree that whichever team wins the turnover battle tomorrow probably wins the game. With two offenses that like to throw it around a lot, every possession will be very important.

There is a maturity thing where Sefo has to realize that when Spruce is triple covered, there is someone else open. There has to be. Our D handled Goff pretty well last year through the air, I just hope they can repeat on the road tomorrow. Should be a large group of buff faithful in Berkeley.

Turnovers are important, but points off of turnovers are the critical statistic. If Colorado scores off of turnovers, then they are in really good shape, especially if they don't allow Cal to score off of any possible turnovers.

Sefo said he thought he had pass interference on the play, so he felt free to take that risk.

If you have a free play, why would you throw into triple coverage? Someone else had to be open.

Still doesn't explain the one he threw in triple coverage in the ASU game. Back to back games, same mistake. He needs to learn to not make that mistake.

No idea...just telling you what he said.

I know, I heard the interview as well. Young player making a young mistake is what it was. He has to correct it is my only point.
Yeah he does. In his defense, at least one of his INTs wasn't his fault as he got hit when throwing. But he still needs to step up his game...particularly on the deep ball. Has he thrown one yet that, if caught, didn't take a herculean effort on the the receivers part to catch? He's no Goff or Mannion on the long ball, that's for sure.

The mistake was not throwing it to Spruce in triple coverage, it was throwing it to Spruce in triple coverage without seeing the flag thrown first and confirming it was a free play. If you know you're getting at least 5 or 15 yards and an automatic first down, who cares if someone else was open who might have gained five or ten yards? It's totally worth it to let your best player, who is very good with the ball in the air, try to make a spectacular play.

So, what you're saying is, tomorrow is more unique than every other game day?

I would like for this to be a game. A bunch of bad interceptions and/or turnovers really would ruin that for me. Thanks.

How can you have pass interference before you throw the ball? Maybe he meant holding.

Yeah, it would be holding or illegal contact or something of that nature. Still, a free play (five yards and an automatic first) so long as the flag is actually thrown.

I am saying there is a clear weakness for us going against a clear strength for Cal. So yeah, that's pretty unique as it pertains to this game.

Cal's got the better offense, I think.

That means that CU needs extra possessions and can't give extra possessions.

Assuming the Buffs play well, I do believe that turnovers decide this one.

The incorrect usage of the word "unique" in this thread is making me grumpy.

Because he wanted a big play--bigger than what the penalty would net. Obviously it was a mistake, he should only do it if he actually sees a flag.

Huh?

Both teams get the same number of possessions (within one anyway).

Are you channelling Madden all of sudden? You see, the team with more points will win the game.

/impression

While turnovers are always important, especially deep in your own territory, I think this game is more about offense execution. Can CU keep up with Goff, and limit him? DC had some stats showing it our secondary actually has done quite well so far, but they ignored penalties. I think some PI at a bad time will play as big a role in this game as turnovers.

Technically, you're right about possessions. In the same way as if you show up at the restaurant and she stands you up... you still went out on a date.

This kind of thinking is what leads to too much reliance on the pass when behind. It seems people forget that all that matters is doing the best course of action that will lead to a score.

Sure. A cursory glance shows similar turnovers in the HI game as the ASU game. One we claim we could have won without turnovers the other we won in spite of them. I'm not saying they don't matter, but punting due to three and outs is just as bad as driving to score and missing out due to a red zone turnover.
