My Takeaways:

1. The passing offense is solid overall and would be very good without the high number of interceptions and a low yards per attempt number. Sefo's challenge going forward is going to be taking care of the football because he is tied for last in the conference with Connor Halliday (not a good thing). Sefo is very good at avoiding sacks, needs to carry that over to not forcing the ball to covered receivers now. The yards per attempt number is being held down because of the lack of an intermediate passing game IMO. The passing offense is very much boom or bust right now.

2. The rushing game is very inefficient. A couple big running plays on the season and that is it. A lot of empty yards. Just as an example, we average about 25 more yards a game than Oregon State, but they have almost twice as many rushing touchdowns (10 to 6).

3. The red zone TD percentage stat was the most surprising stat of all. Very good, despite the high profile failures the first half of the season. This was a point of emphasis this past offseason and that appears to be paying off, with the notable exceptions of course.

Where do we rank in Conference and Nationally, regarding Improvement? Prefer results to be graphed. TIA!

Burrito - am I doing this right?

Defensive stats overview is not going to be as fun, especially compared to last year on the running side.

As for the YPA, we are really missing Prich there. He really took the top off. Spruce has had some great long TDs, but that is just not his game usually. I thought Fields was going to provide that to us this year, but he really struggles to see the ball downfield and Sefo seems to have stopped going to him as much after some real awkward looking attempts as recently as the ASU and Hawaii games, and one early against OSU.

Bobo might be the guy, but he might not have the footspeed to consistently be a deep threat. He's a big target though, and does get after the jump balls.

And the YPA has been creeping up in the last few games (6.5 to now 6.7). I think that is a direct result of McCullough turning into our split TE. He is getting a lot of intermediate catches.

Also, Sefo is just about on pace to tie or beat the all time TD passing record at CU against USC.

Amazing how high in the rankings we are at scoring in the red zone and TD's in red zone when we have missed tons of opportunities down by the goal line.

I don't know if the OL is getting enough credit for the offense this year. I read where we have almost 300 pass attempts and only 8 sacks - that's pretty damn good. They need to run block better and get better push on short yardage, but this is the best OL performance I've seen from the Buffs in years.

And people want Bernardi gone.

I like Sefo quite a bit. He is definitely taking a nice step forward this season.

I just hope he finds a way to protect the football more. He has thrown at least one INT in five straight games. The team cannot take the "next step" if that trend continues.

Yup. Progress though. At the beginning of the season, the question was whether he could handle the load of being the engine of the offense. He has answered that. The next step is if he can stop making bad mistakes at bad times. The one thing I'm interested in seeing is what his actual interception rate is, because when he is throwing more than 50 times a game, you are going to see a fair amount of interceptions even with a good interception rate. That said, I don't mind a deep INT on 3d and long, but INTs like he had against OSU and Cal need to stop happening.

We are 4th in the nation in passing touchdowns and 3rd in conference. That's absolutely ridiculous.

If we can find a threat at the TE position in 2015, this offense could be scary good.

Gotta give Lindgren some credit here. I think he has done a good job calling games and finding the holes in the defense.

Agree about needing a playmaking TE (fingers crossed for Keeney), but I don't think we can be scary good until we have a difference maker at RB.

Absolutely. He still sucks at 4th and short, but even that's getting a little better.

When Christian Powell breaking two long runs from the FB spot is the extent of big plays in the running game on the season, there are issues. Adkins looked better against Oregon State, but he still mostly goes down on first contact.

I think that could go hand in hand. Our run blocking is as much our TE's problem as the Oline, IMO.

Best YAC RB is Lindsay, but I get the feeling he's just not consistent in going where he is supposed to when he gets the ball.

Yeah, he seems to freak out a bit and doesn't seem to have the best vision. Those are things you can learn...what he has is speed and an attitude.

These stats point to a middle of the pack Pac team....frustrating we could sneak a couple more wins

Yep. Defensive stats will show us why we are at the 2 wins, unfortunately. If the defensive can turn it around (especially run defense) it could get a little interesting the second half of the season.

Week 6.

just some fun for benchmarking purposes (all stats Sefo unless otherwise stated):

ESPN QBR Rating 2013: 54.4 - Rank = 80 (Wood 37.3)
ESPN QBR Rating 2014 (Week 6): 68.5 - Rank = 37/127 (N/A)

YPA 2013: 7.1 - Rank = 75 (Wood 7.0)
YPA 2014 (week 6): 6.6 - Rank = 89 (Gehrke 4.4)

2013 Normal QB Rating: 128.3 - Rank = 78 (Wood 120.4)
2014 Normal QB Rating (week 6): 137.2 - Rank = 57/126 (Gehrke 86.8)

Random things:
Passing Yards per game = #18 at 320.3 (Sefo is still #5 in total passing yards in the nation)
Rushing Yards per game = #77 at 156.3 (4.2 YPA which is still good for #76 in the nation)
Total Offense is #32 with 477 yards/game.
PPG = 31.7 good for #50.

Time for an update after Sefo's worst two games of the season imo. Post game 8:

(all stats Sefo unless otherwise stated):

ESPN QBR Rating 2013: 54.4 - Rank = 80 (Wood 37.3)
ESPN QBR Rating 2014 (Game 8): 66.6 - Rank = 40/129 (N/A) Trend: Slightly down
YPA 2013: 7.1 - Rank = 75 (Wood 7.0)
YPA 2014 (week 6): 6.2 - Rank = 104 (Gehrke 4.4) Trend: Sharply Down

2013 Normal QB Rating: 128.3 - Rank = 78 (Wood 120.4)
2014 Normal QB Rating (week 6): 131.3 - Rank = 67/126 (Gehrke 94.8) Trend: slightly down

Random things:
Passing Yards per game = #20 at 302 (Sefo is now #16 in total passing yards in the nation) Trend: slightly down
Rushing Yards per game = #63 at 167.9 (4.3 YPA, #68 in the nation) Trend: Moderately up
Total Offense is #28 with 470 yards/game. Trend: yards down, ranking slightly up, so slightly positive with meat of conference schedule beginning.
PPG = 31.9 good for #50. Trend: no change. Positive sign. Hope we can keep it up against the next few teams.

New Item: Interceptions: 11 on 368 attempts, tied for 5th worst in the nation. Trend: still bad.

overall analysis: Sefo's regression is clear, but that USC game is, so far, just a blip. The problem is the interceptions. That, and the WR really struggling to get open against the top level athletes at USC and UCLA. This has been somewhat counterbalanced by a running game that has improved significantly. Although YPC isn't up much, we are getting a lot more meaningful yards. (less runs for 2 yards or less on first down).

This offense is really missing a meaningful deep threat. Once we figured out Shay fields isn't good at consistently spotting the ball on deep throws, we stopped going deep to him. Neither Spruce nor Bobo can get open deep against teams with top flight athletes in the secondary. Dink and dunk offense is the result. Can't have interceptions if you aren't matching them with explosive plays.
