Rank is in the conference:
Scoring defense (11th)
Total defense (6th)
Rushing defense (11th)
Pass defense (5th)
Pass Efficiency Defense (7th)
Third Down Defense (6th)
Sacks (T-5)
Takeaways (T-9)
Red Zone Defense (12th)

What it all means:

1. Not as bad in many areas as I would have thought, especially sacks and third down defense.

2. We cannot stop the run. Giving up 5.0 yards a carry with 5 of the top 6 rushing offenses left to play.

3. The red zone defense is really bad and is probably the single biggest factor for our defensive struggles. This was a point of emphasis in the offseason and something is not clicking. Keep in mind, we are dead last despite a great game against Hawaii.

4. This secondary is a few more turnovers from being pretty damn good.

Difficulties stopping the run and our problems in the red zone are definitely linked.

I also think the red zone issues have a lot to do with youth & lack of depth in the front 7 becoming amplified when we're at the end of a long drive and fatigue has set in.

As you pointed out, though, there are surprising bright spots. McCartney has probably surprised and impressed me more than anyone.

The defensive line is a mess and with Gillam hurt they have nothing at linebacker. Not a recipe for success.

The defense needs a major infusion of talent in the front seven. Both lines actually.

Nothing to disagree with. One stat I'd like to see is average starting position for our opponents. Our total D could be skewed by the field position number. Pure speculation. I don't recall our opponents having a short field that often.

We lost some players on defense in preseason camp. Will they both be back next year? Might that help?

Which players are we redshirting that will make a difference next year on D?

Sacks is impressive considering what we looked like against CSU. Impressed with our pass D also. Hard to fathom we aren't last in takeaways.

Buffs better surprise us positively Sat. Otherwise UCLA will hop onboard the USC first quarter train knockout punch. That will be their coaches mandate against us. Early and often.

I expect Buffs to show up early in a solid manner Sat. If not, we will hear the boat engines warming up. We need to remind ucla they been irratic this season.

Tedric top 5 in interceptions. There is a bright spot per defense. Like that young man.

I don't think UCLA has the line or WR's to do what USC did to us

Hope you are correct. Lack of results last week has interrupted our progress. Let's not turn this into a pattern.

Rest of this season I am expecting a better effort and preparedness than last week. It's time given all that is being done surrounding this program. Also critical for recruitment. I am predicting a win against UCLA which is a switch for me. And probably crazy.

Think it it is solely cuz I am pissed about the USC showing. And I am a contrarion most of the time.

Unfortunately I have a feeling UCLA takes us behind the woodshed. Our D has been awful this year, and UCLA does have the WRs to hurt us. Our LBs have to be on point with zone read and short passing game, and if there is one glaring hole in our D it's the LBs.

The numbers are surprising considering MacIntyre was actually a pretty good DC himself. Maybe he takes over some DC duties

There is no way Mac is happy about this defense. I'll be extremely surprised to see Baer back next year

Not as bad as I thought. Wonder how it compares to last year's rankings.

Outside of the secondary, I'm not sure we have the horses on defense. I'm sure a good DC could do better, but I don't think this D can be very good regardless.

3 year contract...

Do you really, honestly think that an AD that is building a brand new $150+ million dollar facility is going to say, "I'm sorry he's not getting it done, but you have to keep him on because he has one year left on his $250 thousand/year* contract?"

You really think that?

*base salary - hard to see any buyout requiring payment of the supplemental salary, bonuses and perks.

I said it in another thread, but some version of this needs to happen next year: fire Baer and hire an up and coming position coach / assistant DC who is a stud on the recruiting trail. MM takes on some aspects of the DC position while mentoring/preparing this new DC to take over the defense entirely.

MM has had to be focused on instilling a culture change in the program for the past two years. He's had to stand up processes and systems to ensure NCAA compliance and academic support. That stuff was and is important, but the amount of time he spends on those things should be going down now (he still has to spend time on it, because it is important, but he doesn't have to spend so much time on it). He should use that extra time taking over parts of the DC job - I don't know how much he should, can or will do that this season, but we can't go into next year without a shake-up on the defensive side.
