Is CU really improving?

I thought the D played pretty well. Not sure of the points UCLA has put up this season but considering we lost Addison (again) and stayed with them into OT.... not bad at all. We need more tslent in the front 7, yet i thought they did decent all things considered.

I would say we have improved from last year. And we are a better team than against CSU. However, I am not seeing much improvement during this season. We seem to be making the same mistakes over and over...getting behind early, fighting back, making key mistakes etc.
I hope we see another quantum leap between this year and next as we did between last year and this year. If that happens, we'll be bowling.

Definitely. We were a lot worse not too long ago. We still play like ass at times. The O can't be seen at times. The defense gives up a lot of points in single quarters. We are a better team now than the one that lost to CSU.
We still aren't good though. Sefo throws bad interceptions at times and lacks situational awareness. The D can't force turnovers.
But being in the pac12 teams are going to put up points. I wish we had a great D, but we don't and probably never will again as long as the conference is full of elite QBs given today's game.

There is a difference between a bad defense that can make plays and a bad defense that prevents your team from winning most weeks. We are the latter unfortunately. Even yesterday, we gave up 300+ on the ground. Teams are giving up a lot of yardage in today's game, but few teams are giving up that much on the ground (we rank 100th in rushing defense) or in the manner we give those yards up (5.6 a carry). And that's with an offense that controls the clock most weeks. I see major improvement in the pass defense, but that is getting buried by really bad run defense and we still have the top three rushing teams in the conference left to play.The offense looks light years better. Second makes too many mistakes, but hopefully he grows out of it. But we have a young and inexperienced offense that is putting up points and even found a running game the last few weeks. We can and likely will get better here with just a couple more pieces.Even the special teams do not look that bad right now. Not great, but better.
To the bolded, in many ways we are where Utah was last year. Last year, they lost an overtime game to Oregon State, this year they won an overtime game to them; last year they lost to ucla by a touchdown, this year they won a close game; they lost 19-3 to USC last year, but beat them in a close game this year. Now to their credit, they did break through and win some conference games last year and took care of business in their out of conference slate, but if we can see similar improvement next year (I know, always next year) we could have a pretty significant jump.
Are we better, is that a real question? Do you watch the games? We are light years better than we were 2-3 years ago and improved versus last year. Are we good, no but that is not what you asked. We are in games, are competing, not getting blown our every week, and have a chance to win. We are not a laughing stock of college football anymore.
Wins are not happening but damn, I an not wanting to leave the games at half time. Are they where we want them, no. Do we need more wins, yes. Is there room for more improvement, absolutely. Are they improving, definitely.

Utah has the best special teams unit in the nation this year. #1 in net punting, 13-15 on fgs with an average of 43 yards per attempt and 4 kick/punt return touchdowns. Going into yesterday's games their special teams unit was worth 8 points per game according to some analytics that ESPN did. I think Utah has a pretty average offense and a decent defense but I think special teams has really got them over the hump this year.
We are improved, but still a great distance to go. I think most all of us on this board will agree to that.
We are still playing from a deficit in terms of talent. We are closing the gap in terms of game management/calls/execution. We are giving up fewer big plays, yet we still find ways to give them up every game.
We show flashes of explosive offense and gritty defense, but all too infrequently. Our special teams are improved beyond compare vs Embree days.
Our worst shortcoming in my opinion is not being able to play all three phases in one game.... consistency lacks.... but yes, we are improving.

Bigger loss was Tedric, second time this year we have lost him, second time this year we've lost in double OT

Yes, we're been very competitive in conference games as compared to getting blown out in recent years. Furthermore, this team continues to fight and play hard even when getting down big early.

The point differential in our losses cannot simply be attributed to our offense improving. The defense, though I'll argue will never be stellar with Baer at the helm, has more seasoned players and is improving even when out-athleted by their competition. The what-if game will continue as I speculate that Gillam, Thompson, and Bell will be fully healed next year to lead us to further improvement, but the potential is there. Little things like penalties (on Crawley in past games and one I can think of on Coleman yesterday) can be cleaned up with older, smarter players. It should get better, but we definitely need to get more playmakers in there.

last year Utah had an injured QB. This year he is healthy and they brought in a fifth year senior four star from oklahoma to push him. They also brought in a JC running back that beat out last years starter. They did a great job filling holes and adding depth through strategic recruiting. CU had more holes to fill. CU's recruiting is not at a PAC level. I hope they win a couple to give their recruiting a boost!
