A mixture of emotions (rant)...

Saturday was a roller coaster of emotions. Went from looking like a blow-out to the fact we could be back into it in the 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] quarter to just nothing in the 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] quarter other than status quo, can’t do **** after half, to a barrage of emotions in the 4[SUP]th[/SUP] quarter and overtime.
Observations from start to beginning and some points to make:

  1. Crowd sucked at beginning. We are going to be lucky to have 15k in there by kickoff this week if people can’t get there by noon. Student section has stayed longer, but about the same size as last year. Fortunately close late games have kept them from mass exodus with 10 minutes remaining. The student section is getting better.
  2. I hear all this **** talking about the defense yielding 300 yards rushing. 92 of it was on awful misalignment and Gillam completely inept. I have called for Daigh to start and minus one pass defense, he is the better player this year. They need to keep with him and let Gillam freaking heal and eat. Outside of that long run, the defense played well. They gave up 4 key long runs, but besides that they stepped up to an offense that put 60+ on ASU. Additionally, they kept us in the game at many key points. That didn’t happen last year.
  3. Can’t give up huge early leads and offense needs to bail out defense. Defense had a key stop to make it 17-0. Sefo should have answered with a TD immediately to make up for his AWFUL throw. Instead we had to wait and Washington answered quickly.
  4. You score a TD and the defense comes up big again and instead of having the head to get under center and snap the ball or call for the ball and spike it, 24 seconds winds down. I knew what to do with 20 seconds left and so did MacIntyre but Sefo was too flustered. Needs to get some composure.
  5. Come out flat again in 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] and waste a great 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] quarter by the defense, as noted above.
  6. The 4[SUP]th[/SUP] quarter comeback was huge. Bobo does not see enough snaps IMO. He has dynamic speed and he brought us back into that game.
  7. While Tony Jones had a great game, Adkins II was better. He should have had some key short yardage carries that Jones got stuffed on.
  8. The timeout at the end of the 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] was idiotic. The lack of a timeout on 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] and 3 was idiotic as well. Set up a good play like you did the play before. Calm the team down.
  9. You have to step on the damn pedal when you have the chance to win the game. You don’t settle. At end of game, you have to score a TD, not kick a FG. At 1[SUP]st[/SUP] OT, you score a TD. You can’t settle. In 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] OT, you have nothing to lose, ****ing go for it on 4[SUP]th[/SUP] and 1.
  10. Sefo has to quit throwing picks and not sustaining drives. We have to answer with scores. 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] quarter we had 2-3 and outs and a 5-yd drive. To open the game we had first 5 drives end in 5-plays or less. If you are in a hole, you have to dig out of it. If we are going to get the ball first, set the tone. We need to start setting the damn tone.
Sefo is solid, but not great. There is no excuses for the picks he is throwing. They are bad reads and overthrows. While he is amongst the top half of passers in the league in percentage, yards and TDs, his QBR is amongst the lowest and his interception number and rate is extremely high. He has to take the next step. We have to let Sefo finish the season. Then it is open competition. I don’t think we have better on the roster and probably won’t next year other than HOPEFULLY Montez. Hopefully with Sefo being an intelligent, hardworking, humble kid he will take the next step and shine enough that he leads us to a bowl next year and then is pushed his senior year by a young stud (Montez or otherwise) but is the best option for a 10-win season. I don’t know. He hasn’t been great, but hasn’t been awful. Just has to be smarter. I love him not taking sacks, but he often kills drives by not picking up that second read that the special QBs make.
We should have beat UCLA, Cal and Oregon State. We waited too long against ASU and had no answer to CSU in the 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] half of that game and USC was a no chance once we let them start going. We should be at least 4-4 or maybe 5-3. Instead we sit here at 2-6 and go well maybe next year. It has to be next year. Fortunately, I see progress in many areas.
Crawley has become a special player and Henderson has got picked on. Tedric Thompson is a stud and I hope he heals. Gillam is undersized and unless he puts on some weight, he needs to be moved to a rover position and take Greer’s spot. I really am not hating on Addison. He just has been a liability and Daigh has been better. A healthy Watanbe may have something to say about playing time next year.
The student section moving over after the redshirt freshmen moved over was special to see. I was hoping for a running on the field moment for those guys. They have been better this season. Like I said, wish they had got their earlier, but they were there late and it was very cool to see. The stadium was dead quiet after OT. Worse than Oregon State. Rather than getting screwed, we screwed ourselves. Early deficit, halftime, turnovers and not taking control of the game late cost us. It felt like we were going to win but those things all added up to another damn loss.
That all said; we are so much better this year than the last two. To be down 17-0 and should have beat a ranked team, so disappointing but last year it would have been at least a 42-21 loss. So bitch all you want about the defense but main thing is stopping those big gashing runs. We were held all game. UCLA got away with a lot but secondary stepped up. Can’t give QB that much time and you have to sell those holds as a DL. McCartney is going to be a beast by the time he is a senior. Has been great to see his transformation into a legit Pac 12 player. Tupou was disruptive as could be this week and I saw the beast he is supposed to be. Our run blocking was mean. We hit, initiated and re-engaged when there was separation. That is something I have not seen near enough as. The Mountain of Cameroon, Stephen Nembot, has his QBs back and a fire. He will be a big key for our success next year.
We are going to beat Washington. Washington does not have the weapons they did last year. They got lucky and caught Cal completely shell shocked after that early turnover so they made them look inept. Otherwise, they have been inept on offense since non-conference slate and can’t keep up. They do not have the horses to put up the points they need to and while they have a good defense, the Buffs can put up points if they play their style of ball. We also have a bad taste from the joke of a game we played against them last year. Sefo has a couple points to make: He should have been recruited better by his home state and that he will be the QB of the Buffs until he graduates. While he has all the coaches support, they want to see that next step as much as we do. He isn’t the only kid holding us back but special QBs bring success to programs, especially ones that are so pass dependent like a Pac 12 Colorado!!!
One thing I heard Saturday I never care to hear again is WE ARE YOUNG. I am optimist but come on! This team has starters at every position that have played a full season and a half for the most part. This isn’t the last two years. That said, Embree’s recruits have not panned out and like Hawkins guys, we are playing with a mixture of 3 different coaches kids still. Unlike Embree that things regressed, we see progress and a system with the majority of big playmakers being Embree’s recruits that bought in and signed with MacIntyre as the coach. This team needs to now believe they can finish and step on it and get a win.
So Rick New-weasel, we are a Pac 12 team. We are close. But close sucks. We will beat Washington and then get a big win vs. Arizona. Then get rolled by Oregon. Then end on a high note in a close fought win over a surprising Utah team and finish a happy 5-7. Hell, I would be fine with one more damn win. Just keep showing progress. 2015 is the decision making year for MacIntyre. I believe we go 8-5 or 7-6 next year. Let’s finish the season supporting the team, hope progress continues to show, and let the **** hit the fan next year or enjoy the rise of CU football gain in 2015.

Just a point on Gillam, he was sick as a dog saturday. Shouldn't have played, at all.

Also we ARE young. We are the 3rd youngest team in the nation. We have too many freshman and sophomores at key positions. With it being game 9 next week the experience in the playbook and at the college level isn't where youth shows up. It shows up in the fact that most are not physically mature enough to handle the 12 game grind yet. That is an issue that can only be solved by time in the weight room and with the training staff. The fact of that matter is that freshman and sophomores are typically not big enough or conditioned enough to compete for 12 weeks against juniors, seniors, rs-seniors. Embree's 2nd class would be juniors or rs-sophomores now, however the majority of that class is gone. Because of that hole we are forced to play guys that are not physically ready to handle those kinds of roles. Just how it is.

It sounds like Gillam shouldn't have been on the field. It has been that way much of the season with his health issues. While he is better covering the best, Daigh is just a better FB player this year. Sad, but true.

Our starters all have a significant amount of playing time experience was my point and I can get on board with yours. We have only 4 non-juniors on offense and thus why we are clicking more often. On defense, I agree with the fact of being overmatched at DEs and LBs. That is why CSU kicked our ass and why we get ran on. We can't hold the edges. Youth can pass rush, but run stopping is not as easy. LB has killed us. I thought KO played his best game of the year. On big run plays I have noticed our DL rides blocks too far down. As a former DL and DL coach, it drives me ****ing nuts. Ride with a guy but not 10 yards. If you are going 10 yards, they are cutting back right off your ass and kicking the DE out.

We are a year away. There are really no excuses after this year. Put up or shut up time so let's finish as strong as possible and stand what with what your username is.

Agree. There is no excuse next year. HCMM absolutely needs to get us off the bottom of the Pac-12 next year. Does that mean bowl game? I sure hope so, but the Pac-12 did not give us any favors in scheduling. We will have to become a better road team very fast. 5 wins is probably the minimum for me with 7 being my expectation.

-Student section is much bigger this year, not sure what you've been looking at
-Gillam this year is better than Daigh
-Bobo needs to learn the playbook better then he'll get more snaps
-Hindsight is awesome

At a minimum MacIntyre needs to do better than 1-8 in conference in his third year, assuming all the OOC games are win, and there's no reason that shouldn't be the case.

-Student section about same size, yes, maybe bigger. Difference is they are staying late rather than leaving. Not being down by 30 helps that.
-Gillam has been a subpar MLB and taken a huge step back due to size and health. Daigh has been every bit as good when given the chance.
-Bobo doesn't know the playbook? You must coach to know this. He's better than all but Spruce and Fields and when Spruce is doubled, I like Bobo one on one destroying secondary. Of his 19 catches how many has he been tackled 1-on-1 w/o a fight?
-I am pretty optimistic but you have a big ray of sunshine up your butt.

A minimum of better than 1-8 is not a goal. Finishing 3-6 in conference and 7-6 overall should not be too much to ask. Should beat Utah and Wazzou at end of year and sprinkle in a win or two before that. If this team is this close to 5-3, why not expect a bowl?!

It's bigger, and they are staying later. Their isn't a way to confirm this so it's dumb to keep arguing this point.

Gillam hasn't been as good as he was last year, but he's still better than Daigh. Daigh is a big time liability in pass coverage and outside runs.

Playbook thing is stuff I've heard from good peps

Because it's year 3. We will have a team consisting of mostly upperclassmen. We have 4 OOC games, going 3-6 in year 3 of MacIntyre should be expected. And where did I say we should be at 5-3? I believe I stated 3-5 or 4-5 (stats say 3.5 wins) and a 5-7 record at the end of the year given the adjusted stats up to this point. MacIntyre needs to earn his paycheck next year because the core of this team is coming back and those guys are young right now. The losing close games could be a blessing for next year as well, character building moments and teaching moments.

In bold

Call me crazy, but I am actually am pretty pleased with how this year has gone. Feels weird to be saying that about a season that could very well end up having just two wins (I really, truly hope we find a way to get at least one more- our fanbase and program in general need it emotionally more than anything- but realistically, that might not happen. ). I think that speaks volumes as to just how utterly terrible we were under Embree. Hawk left us at the bottom of the barrel, and then Embree broke right through the bottom of that barrel and took us to depths that were simply unimaginable beforehand. I maintain that our 2012 team was the worst, most incompetent joke of a team I have ever seen play. You look at other legendarily bad teams and you at least see that many of them were able to have close games- Most of our 2012 games were over before my apathetic ass could even be bothered to begrudgingly check the score. 2012 just completely redefined my perception of bad, and it became obvious that it would be 2-3 years minimum before we could be taken seriously in the Pac 12.

So far, MacIntyre has shown quantifiable improvements, and I would argue that he has met most reasonable expectations. 2013 was a horrible season too, but still a step up. For brief flickers, we looked competitive. We were a run of the mill major conference cellar dweller, which was a step up from the worst of all time territory the 2012 squad seemed so desperate to live and breathe in. This year, instead of showing brief flashes of goodness, we are showing brief-ish flashes of the terribleness of the past five years. It is unfortunate that, in a conference like the Pac-12, flashes like that will lose you most games. But guess what? We look like a Pac-12 team! We were so far away from being that for so long it felt like, and now, with the exception of USC, we are taking teams right down to the wire. It's sad that the close games haven't gone in our favor- there are certain ineptitudes both within our coaching staff (offensive playcalling, especially in overtime) and players (See if you can even imagine worse times to throw picks, Sefo... We also seem to start both halves slowly most of the time) that simply aren't allowing that to happen. I usually don't like to rant about refs either, because I maintain that great teams can overcome bad officiating, but we haven't been done many favors by refs, either, which is a factor (mostly against OSU- but again, we had the opportunity for a game winning drive and failed hard.) Quintessentially, it sucks that we aren't winning, but holy ****, doesn't it feel good to at least look like we can win?

This isn't about ****ing moral victories. We should never pat ourselves on the back over a loss. That's bull****. However, I, for one, am ****ing elated that my fall Saturdays are all about the Buffs again. This team is finally exciting and fun to watch. Ever since like, 2009, when CSU fans stormed Folsom and stomped on our logo and it became 100 percent undeniable and obvious that Dan Hawkins and his plethora of inane platitudes were ****ing worthless in anything related to DIVISION 1 FOOTBALL AND THE BIG 12, it's been so hard to give a single **** about CU football. I'm a pessimist by nature and I made jokes at the Buffs' expense far more than I showed my pride. It was dark times, but I value my time and money and CU game me no reasons for thinking that their football team was worth more than negligible amounts of either quantity.

But guess what guys? That **** seems like it is over for now! It's ****ing frustrating because it hasn't been over in terms of our record, but holy ****, don't act like that Cal game wasn't one of the most exciting college football games you've seen in a while, and don't act like the comeback in last Saturday's 4th quarter didn't make you ****ing believe that there was some ****ing buff football magic still in existence. Because it sure as **** is. If MacIntyre doesn't start winning games next year, there's no excuse. I'm not saying we can his ass if we don't make a bowl game, but we damn well better get close. Either way, my capacity to give a **** about the Buffs is higher than my capacity to give a **** about the Broncos, and that's like the first time that has happened since at least 2008.

It's ok to be happy that we have a fun team to watch again. Because what is football other than a certain type of entertainment capable of bringing so many people together? It's worth getting together at Folsom on fall Saturdays again! Walking up the hill to go to the game, I finally have some pep and anticipation in my step. It's not the funeral like dirge it had been for so many goddamn years. If MacIntyre regresses next year, ****ing bitch all you want. But we are not regressing right now. Period. Calm your asses down and enjoy the ride, because it finally feels like its worth riding again.

Come on, bitches. I can't read all these ****ing long posts.

Daigh is a good player, but is not better than Gillam. As much as Gillam was out of position on the big TD run, although you could also pin that on Awuzie for trying to shoot inside the tackle instead of staying outside to keep contain, Daigh was completely out of position on the final TD in OT. He bit extremely hard on the RB action and ended up leaving no one to stop Hundley on the keeper. Brady just doesn't have the wheels to be effective on a high enough % of plays against the spread and read option teams. He is much more effective in short yardage against the inside run.

No posts from Mtn yet? He's probably been typing for hours, can't wait until his post drops and puts you long winded folks to shame.
