Does The Big 12 Expand In The Next Two Years ?

Rumors floating around that they may not only get to 12 but actually go to 14 schools.

If TCU or Baylor get shut out of the 'final 4' I could certainly see expansion happen if it's believed that not having a conference championship game hurt either school's chances.

Who would be taken ? Cincy ? BYU ? csu ? BSU ? Houston ? Memphis ? Cent Fl ? So FL ? UConn ?

Would this cause the Pac12 to do anything as then 3 of the P5 would have 14 schools ?

Problem is their are few viable candidates that bring both a credible program on the field and enough revenue potential to make it worth giving them a cut of conference media revenues.

UCF, USF, Cincy and BYU.

If they did expand I could see them going to one of the Florida schools and Cincy. BYU has the attendance and a TV market impact but does any conference want to deal with their baggage?

UCF, USF - travel partners
Cincy, WVU - travel partners

BYU - ????

I have a few Mormon friends who live and breathe BYU football and are very anxious that they'll be left out of expansion, but I find it hard to believe that that particular selection of teams would work out.

Seems more viable for them to either get the rule changed or say screw the NCAA outright and just add a championship game.

I could have sworn that the OU president went on record saying that there was no way that he would ever allow OU to be in the same conference as BYU, but I could be wrong on that. Frankly, I don't know why they would be cool with Bailer and TCU and not BYU.

If you go to 14, you don't really have travel partners since the divisions are 7/7.

14 is the absolute worst configuration, imo.

Based on who has the power in the Big 12, the one thing I'm sure of is that the TX/OK schools will make sure that they get grouped together so they all get 7 of their conference games played in TX/OK and then they'll play at least 2/3 of their OOC within those states so that fans and recruits get 9 local games a year.

As long as it doesn't compromise revenue, they could care less how geographically spread out the rest of the conference is.

Apparently, BYU is a different animal because they can be difficult to work with. They have their own network and their own rules and those always come first over what their conference wants. Basically like Texas. Plus, people still have a problem with them fielding teams with guys that are 2 to 3 years older.

I don't see where the Pac would go if not cherrypicking Big 12 schools.

Regional dominance by eliminating the fly-over states.

UNM to get that state & the growing city of Albuquerque.

UNLV or Nevada to get that state.

Boise State to grab Idaho.

The 4th would probably be SDSU since it's such a big city.

Wildcard would be to look at the University of Houston since it brings Texas and also had a lot of "conference of champions" appeal.

UCF, USF, Cincy and BYU.
I would look at Louisville above all but maybe BYU, and they don't have the same baggage.

Also, given they already have a tiered revenue system, any offers to these schools probably come with a reduced revenue package that is still wildly higher than what they are making today.

First off - remember that the Pac has no need to expand. Neither now nor in the future. What other conferences may or may not do has zero impact on the Pac 12. Just because the Big 12, SEC and BiG have 14 teams is no reason for the Pac 12 to expand, too.

If the Big 12 expands, I could see them going after BYU and Cincy. Both would add significant TV sets and increased competitive teams. Let's face it, the Big 12 doesn't care about academics or geography.

**** no to UNLV. Double **** no to Boise.

UNLV isn't that bad. Academics aren't up to Pac 12 standards but the football game would be a win more times than not and the
road trip would be fun. Adding them for basketball would be fun too.

louisville just joined the ACC, they ain't leaving that gravy train. UCF would sell their souls to join the b12, but hold their noses to work with USF to do it. Cincy is the natural due to WVa.

Yup, no reason to expand just to expand

Yeah but there is reason to expand. You can add very valuable schools in texas and oklahoma and even TCU along with gaining the upper hand with DirectTV. You eliminate a competing conference for a playoff spot and become probably the most powerful conference in the country. You expand your recruiting ground into Texas and pretty much go in a head to head battle with the SEC for the most important state in college football.

I wouldn't consider adding a couple Texas schools as expanding to just expand. It's consider adding a school like Boise or UNLV expanding yo just expand

I have no love for BYU, enjoy watching them when they lose. It's easy to see OU having a degree of strong dislike for BYU as well since OU lost out on some poll ranking in prior years under the arguement about strength of schedule then BYU wins a NC in a year that they beat one ranked team in their openner (A Pitt team that was ranked #3/#7 in the polls and ended up 3-7-1) had titanic battles with the then WAC who's next best teams were a 7-4 Hawaii and 8-4 AFA, and who won the title following a bowl win against an unranked and 6-6 Michigan team.

The biggest issues with BYU other than geography deal with the fact that while they like their money and attention they aren't willing to compromise certain religious beliefs for them. As a result they refuse to play non-NCAA playoff competions on Sundays, no basketball games or non-revenue sports.

They also are percieved as being discriminatory due to certain stances dealing with women, gays, and their history of race relations. Baylor and TCU are religious affiliated instituions but they never let this affiliation get in the way of making money or winning games.

That's not the issue. The issue is not playing anything on Sundays, ever, no matter what.

So, as the rumor goes, the Big 12 would add four new members -- Cincinnati, East Carolina, UCF and South Florida. That would ease WVU's travel burden, as well as give the Big 12 a presence in Florida for recruiting purposes. Interesting, huh?
Except to American Athletic Conference commissioner Mike Aresco, who is rumored to be scrambling. As well he should. If Aresco loses four of the league's 10 members, he doesn't have a conference anymore.
That's why Aresco supposedly is trying to renegotiate the AAC's television contract and is rumored to be seeking "grant of rights" agreements from all of the league's members. The GOR would mean a school could leave the conference, but its television rights would remain with the league for as long as, perhaps, 10 years.
That is tilting at windmills.
If the Big 12 offers those four AAC members, they will be gone in a Greenville minute.
And what becomes of the six remaining AAC members?
Ah, the plot thickens.
There aren't enough quality schools available to fill the AAC's void. The American could take Marshall, Southern Miss, Florida Atlantic and who else? It just doesn't seem likely.
What does appear likely in this hypothetical situation is the AAC would merge with Conference USA to form a 20-member league that would be the biggest and best Non-Power conference.
It would mean Memphis, Houston, Tulsa, SMU and Tulane having to swallow hard and return to C-USA along with UConn coming in.
It also would mean C-USA, which already is a better basketball league than football, would become a lot better with the addition of such basketball powers as UConn and Memphis.

There are 5 conferences with 64 teams today. If they could get their **** together and look at the common good, they would turn it in to 4 conferences with 16 teams each and implement a playoff. The compensation would be enormous for each school.

My bet is, egos will not let it happen, conferences will continue to add these backwater schools, and we will end up with a P5 of 70-80 schools and an awkward playoff set up. Such a shame.

That's why I referenced their rules. I got the network issue from Petros Papadakis on Fox Sports(I know he can be a jackass, but he seemed knowledgeable on this). When it was mentioned that the Pac 12 should look at BYU, Petros had some backstory he got from a few AD's he talked to. Other than the religious issues, the Mormon network comes first. You could have a game on Fox for example, and the tv and radio correspondents would want some time with the team and coaches as you'd expect, well BYU would say we'll let ya know, because they have to give their network time first. Not exactly what your network partners want to hear when they pay a ton of money to broadcast a conference. Petros said it was always weird to do a BYU game because they really didn't seem to care that you were there to broadcast their game for them.

Bowlsby has been quoted quite a few times lately there are no expansion candidates that would deliver pro rata. Texas is plenty happy at ten. They have no need to take less money and expand with mid majors with low academic profiles.

Media and bloggers will have fun with expansion talk for a long time.

As for BYU. The conversation starts and stops with academic freedom. BYU will never be considered for the PAC

The Dirt Burglers have to be loving this plan, they lose Colorado, the Aggies, Mizzzou, and the Corn, and end up in Conference USA on steroids, lol. Unless this is a backfill plan after they and KU say eff it and convince the B10 to take them.

This.

All this talk about the Big 12 needing or wanting to expand is nothing more than a knee-jerk reaction to having 2 teams on the fringe of being in the playoff but no guarantee to get one of them in. Well, the Big 10 has a CG and chances are that their champion won't get in even if they end up with 1-loss (Nebraska/Ohio St)
