Collier Might Be Ready For Hoops Debut At Wyoming

Collier envisions his role as “coming in, keeping the offense and defense steady, finding the open man and attacking when I have the opportunities . . . be a point guard and just lead the offense and defense as much as I can.”

And that's what this team needs to take them to the next level. I just hope Dom is ready to do it.

Well, I'd argue we need a shooter, and while Collier may give us more than Stalzer, it's not our biggest glaring hole. It's shooting.

we don't need more guys who can take shots. A guy who runs the offense well is more important than another guy who can shoot a decent 3.

Tough situation to get your first playing time. What's Wyoming's backcourt like?

STRONGLY disagree. If we can't get Josh the ball, we're not getting to use our best weapon. We're bringing a big ass gun to a knife fight but leaving the ammo behind.

Dom might be able to bring us the ammo.

I agree with this. Our 3-pt shooting has been adequate this year. Having a guy who can really see the court and know where players are supposed to be and get them the ball will be invaluable. I'm starting to see that from XT, but Dom *should* take it to a whole new level.

A 3-pt sharpshooter is great if you find yourself down by 10 points with 10 minutes to go in the game. Otherwise, it's better to have guys who can get the ball down low and convert the high percentage shots. With Josh and Wes, we need to feed the beasts.

We need an unselfish distributor who makes the right plays more than anything.

A knock-down shooter would also, of course, be awesome.

We're talking about 2015-16 with that, though. This year, the best way to get something close to that would be if XT could play more of that role as a 6th man.

Defenses will be packing in against Wes and Josh. That's what I would do if I were them. When that happens, we'll need guys who can hit a couple 3's, but we have those guys already. Again, the only reason you need a Brady Heslip type is if everything else you're trying is failing. CU won't find themselves in a situation like that very often. I think having a guy like that last year would have been very helpful, but not as much this year. If that makes any sense.

Miller is 5 fouls and 7 minutes of pure pain in every game this year.

Next year is where we really see him start to kick some ass.

Tad is quoted as saying he'll be used like Miller's been used.

In the article I linked in the OP, Dom said that he's got some ground to make up in conditioning.

He's got to work his way into the rotation, earn minutes and then show he's physically ready to handle a lot of minutes.

Frankly, the Wyoming game isn't the place to mess around too much with the lineup. We need a win in this one even if it means that Tad shortens the bench to get it. We've got home games with San Fran, AFA and Lipscomb coming up to build Dom's minutes.

How many guys can you pack in against wes & josh without totally neglecting some portion of the court? Say teams put 3 guys on those 2, there's going to be an open man somewhere. I'm pretty confident in most of our players to hit a wide open shot 85%+ of the time.

To me, it sounds ,like dom is a lot like spencer. Can score when needed, but will pass the ball first and always make the right play - not the best play, but the right play.

What we will see is a lot of teams going underneath screens when playing man defense and we'll also see a lot of zone.

Wyoming will definitely be playing a soft zone this weekend.

He at least needs to be a scoring threat. We don't want the opponent to be able to ignore him. Watching him come in and develop is going to be fun.

He can score be it going to the rack or stop and pop. If they ignore him (once he gets some time under his belt), he will hurt them.

i'm going to agree and disagree with both of you and give a nod to Tad -

IMO shooting and PG/distributor are the two biggest weakneses on the team, I think you can argue either and be right. Tad also realized this, he knew he needed to get josh (XJ and even Wes!) the ball in favorable positions. He saw that he didn't have a Levi on the roster to open up spacing nor a SD/Alec who can take it to the rack and get the defense to collapse and get easy buckets for the bigs, so what did he do? He installed a new offense that mitigates the weaknesses on the roster. With this motion offense and the increased off ball movement ia shooter and a pure distributor become much less important. And while the competition hasn't been P12 level yet, we've seen some solid improvement in the half-court. While I will agree that a shooter and a true distributor would both be nice, Tad has made that not matter nearly as much as it would under last years "system."

Jgisland: I think it's a little early to say Tad has made it not matter.

In my experience, having a guy get the ball into Josh/Wes is way easier than having a defense respect the outside shot threat, and the more a D respects the shooters, the easier it is to get it inside.

The caveat to that is if Collier and Askia can penetrate, that will create offense. But we've not seen Askia do that and create shots for others nor get to the line.
I'm very interested in what Dom can bring here, as a penetrating point to help free up things near the basket.

If that succeeds, we will then face zone all day long.

Tad needs a shooter or two to take us from really good to F'ing Good.

Anyone can be a shooter. Just takes practice.
Lol I can definitely understand how that you think that, but NBA guys and even college guys hit 80% of their shots in practice. A guy like Ben Mills will hit everything on you in an open gym type situation. When you transition it to a real game, you separate the real shooters from the non shooters. There's just more pressure, and no coach in the country will let you attempt shots out of your hot zone enough to try to figure it out for you. Poor shooting players don't ever really get better except for a very small percentage.
