For reference and comparison, an "Ideal Roster Breakdown" is poster HERE

Barring attrition (which is almost certain to happen), CU has 18 scholarships available to fill out the 2015 scholarship roster. This includes the assumption that 2014 signees who delayed enrollment (Jackson, Miller & Watanabe) along with 3 new JUCO signees (Carrell, Robbins & Laguda) all enroll in January. Typical attrition is 5-10 guys between the end of the season and signing day. So far, we've had 3 players choose to graduate early (Cotner, Mustoe and Yates). Between discipline, injury retirements and transfers it is likely that we're looking at 2-7 additional slots open up. Terrence Crowder has announced a transfer to FCS, opening up one spot. Isaiah Holland is indefinitely suspended and no longer on the team for legal issues, opening a roster spot.

Current Verbals:

Chris Bounds (TE/OT)
NJ Falo (OLB)
Nick Fisher (CB)
Donald Gordon (RB)
Aaron Haigler (OT)
Jay Hockaday (ILB)
Justin Jan (WR)
Alex Kinney (PK/P)
Tim Lynott (C/G)
Dillon Middlemiss (G/T) - enrolled & in scholarship numbers up top.
Steven Montez (QB)
Isaiah Oliver (ATH)
Brett Tonz (DT/G)
Lyle Tuiloma (DT)
Frank Umu (DT)

That's 15 commits for 15 known slots. Middlemiss enrolled in January, so is on the roster for the spring. This makes it 14 verbals for 15 known remaining slots.

Beyond that, Sam Bennion is still committed as a DE/DT and has another year of his Mission with enrollment expected in January 2016. That won't count toward the numbers for the 2015 roster, but it's worth keeping in mind.

There has, however, been speculation that Boogie Sewell will choose to go on a Mission and that it would open up a scholarship slot for the 2015 roster. He was supposed to decide by the end of October whether or not he would take a 2-year Mission like Bennion, but I haven't seen a report on that either way.

Best guess for expected 2015 depth chart starters this spring:

Offense (12 to account for FB or 3WR formations)
QB - Sefo Liufau (Jr)
RB - Michael Adkins (Jr)
FB - George Frazier (So)
WR - Nelson Spruce (Sr)
WR - Shay Fields (So)
WR - Donovan Lee (So)
TE - Sean Irwin (Jr)
LT - Jeromy Irwin (Jr)
LG - Jonathan Huckins (So)
C - Alex Kelley (Jr)
RG - Shane Callahan (Jr)
RT - Stephane Nembot (Sr)

Defense (12 to account for NB vs 3 LB formations)
DT - Justin Solis (Sr)
DT - Josh Tupou (Sr)
DE - Derek McCartney (So)
DE - Jimmie Gilbert (Jr)
LB - Addison Gillam (Jr)
LB - Kenneth Olugbode (Jr)
LB - Deaysean Rippy (Jr)
CB - Chidobe Awuzie (Jr)
CB - Kenneth Crawley (Sr)
NB - Evan White (So)
S - Jered Bell (Sr)
S - Tedric Thompson (Jr)

LS - Wyatt Tucker Smith (Sr)
P - ?????? (we don't even have a walk on)
K - Diego Gonzalez (Jr)

the class balance seems goofy at a lot of positions.

Too many guys played too early at LB, DB and WR. Attrition and injuries made those wonky. I'd love to hear that we found a JUCO DB who could come in as a sophomore this year. At safety, it balances a bit better if Moeller is put on scholarship as a sophomore. At WR, it balances a bit better if Awini is a junior WR this coming year and if we get some attrition out of that logjam among the sophomores.

Sorry. Should have posted that. An asterisk means the player has already redshirted. I'll add it under the chart.

While Sefo started as a redshirt last year, since it was burned, would he still be considered a redshirt later on? I'm just curious, as we know he's a junior next year either way.

Looking at this lineup on both sides of the ball, it makes me feel it is more about prep than parts. Admittedly we have talent gaps, but this a couple of lineups that could have some success if the catastrophic errors can be reduced.

QB play must become much more steady as it relates to catastrophic mistakes. CU must decrease game losing mistakes in 2015. Destroys team and crowd enthusiasm.

I see see the glass of returning players as half full.

Will be very interesting to see how the coaching staff approaches recruiting in 2016 with so few numbers. They might need to learn how to string r ecruitments out.

I think what we desperately need are some playmakers. We just don't have any of those guys.

Offense we have some nice players, but is there anyone that can just change the game? Nobody at RB can. Spruce is great at WR, but he's not really a gamebreaking guy. Maybe Fields will be?

Defense, who do we look for to get a bunch of sacks? Picks? TFL? McCartney led the team with 4 sacks this year. Not great. 3 total picks from our defense in a pass happy league. Pathetic. All by 1 guy too no less.

ST we don't even really try to make big plays. We seem to prefer playing to avoid the big play. I suppose this is fine, but somewhere we need big plays.

I think they should move Frazier to defense full time. He is a playmaker and has a nose for the ball. We hardly use the FB anyway.

Yes, Sefo should not have the askerisk. Plan was to RS him but when Wood collapsed under pressure he was thrown in to start as a true Frosh.

He does still have his RS year available although the only way I would see him using it would be an early season ending injury.

Also while he has 3 TDs this year and has done will in limited time on offense George Frazier seems to be seeing much more time on defense so I would probably list him there.

We have some gaping holes on that roster that need some immediate help. First place that stands out is OLB, we could definately use a JUCO there. I could see a situation where if Watanabe comes in healthy and is as good as I think he can be where he would get some time at Mike with Gillam playing some at Sam. This would give him more room to work in and he wouldn't be banging into a guard on every play. Even with that we are still painfully thin at all LB positions.

We are also thin a the K/P although we have a WO kicker who is reasonably good (ahead of Diego on the depth chart) and the incoming kid from Fr. Collins is a very good prospect.

I also expect to see Ryan Moeller get a scholly soon. He has played quite a bit this season and shown that he belongs at this level.

Also wouldn't surprise me to see them do much like this year and not start Solis. Both he and Tupou play the nose. Unless Eddie Lopez jumps up to fill that spot our defense has to have one of the two in there to anchor the DL.

Is Rippy seen as a starter for next season? I had high hopes for him, but all I've heard is that his work ethic sucks. :-(

I think they will have to locate his work ethic before they can tell if it sucks or not...you have to see something before you can evaluate it.

It was my understanding that Watanabe was more of an ILB. I had assumed the outside guy in this D was more of a coverage type.

Woodson Greer and Derrick Webb played that position under MacIntyre/Baer. That spot comes off the field on passing downs for our Nickleback.

Another possibility, if we want to get creative:

Jimmie Gilbert plays OLB on run downs with Henington or Robbins at DE. Then, when the NB comes in, Gilbert moves to DE as a pass rusher while a DE comes off the field.

I agree with this. I would guess that Christian Shaver could also get a look at OLB in those situations also.

Sounds like we need to add Samson Kafovalu back to the roster. He'll be back in January.

Dude can play. Congratulations to him on meeting the requirements for earning his way back. I really didn't expect this. Pennies from heaven.
