WBB - Buffs @ Iowa

Our 6-1 Buffs trailed #22 Iowa by a score of 28-35 at the half.

We now have 9 minutes left and the Buffs trail 44-57.

Story of the game is the 3pt line. CU is 2/11. Iowa is 7/18. Other than that, it balances out. CU's made a bunch more turnovers, but is also owning the glass so the shot attempts are even. Iowa only has a 2 point advantage from the line.

Really tough shooting day in a game when the Buffs should have been playing inside-out. Reese didn't score in the first half (finished with 14 on 6/9). Swan had a tough outing, scoring 8 on 4/13 shooting. From the guards, Jaz had one of her best games (17p/12r) but Lexy had another tough shooting day - going 1/10 from the field and not getting to the line.

Too bad there was no TV (and I was watching football so missed the radio broadcast). Especially, if anyone was there or listening, wondering how the officiating seemed. Just looking at the stats- Kresl fouls out and 3 other Buffs ended with 4 fouls, while the most any Iowa player had was 2 players with 3 fouls. (Per the stats, 27 total Buff fouls vs. 16 for Iowa.) Of course, if it was just Iowa being more aggressive on offense, the foul differential could definitely be justified.

Anyway, a 1st road game against a ranked Iowa team figured to be a tough challenge. At least it looks like the Buffs were competitive for most of the game (7 down at half)? Looking at the stats- a few positives. Looks like the Buffs led in rebounds and assists. As Buffnik notes, looks like shooting (esp. from 3 and, to a small extent, free throws), also hurt the scoring some. Losing the turnover battle 19-11 couldn't have helped either.

Anyway- next up is another challenging road game against a 5-2 Missouri team. Go get um Buffs.

I was at the game. The officiating was ridiculous. At one time in the first half, we had 10 fouls and Iowa had 2. No justifying the foul discrepancy except they were homer refs or the Big 1G doesn't play like the Pac 12 does. Bluder didn't have a problem with a single call, but Lappe did. Lappe was in one officials ear most of the first half every time he came down the court. Didn't help.

Iowa does not play that clean. Their crowd booed every time a foul was called on them. All of the player passes for both teams sit in the same section, which is very strange. Iowa fans were behind us and couldn't believe we didn't have more fouls and they shouldn't have had any. Bluder started a taller player on Swan to start the second half and it changed Swan's game and the rebounding. We owned the boards until then. We were getting 2 or 3 shots at our end and getting most of the boards at their end. That changed in the second half with a taller player.

The people behind me had gone to the Louisville game and said this Iowa team was not playing the way they played when lost to Louisville at Louisville. Next up for Iowa is the border war with Iowa State. That is anybody's game.

Unless an unpredicted snow storm comes our way, I plan on driving down to Columbia for that game.

I saw her from behind screaming at the officials, but not her face. I looked at the stats. Kresl fouled out on a technical. Sborov did that earlier in the season. Seniors need to learn that is never a good idea.

Zoe Beard-Fails had told me when I was in Boulder for the pre-season WNIT that she would have some family at the Iowa game. I sat beside two aunts and a man who said the woman with him was his partner.

I'm guessing their students will be on break which was not true at Iowa. Cheerleaders, band, etc. were there. Not a lot of students from what I could see.

CU needs to learn how to do team introductions. Iowa was another place where the arena was darkened for the home team's introductions and a lot more fanfare that CU does. A larger crowd helps also.

I thought I remembered Carver Hawkeye being bigger than it appeared from my seat. When I left I found out why. They have big black drapes they hang in the upper sections of the arena so it looks more full than it really is. They had television monitors every couple of sections and at all the concession stands so you could still tell what was happening at the game. The fan club was getting out when I got to the player pass gate. They had all been given Iowa Christmas ornaments. We really need to learn from what other programs do.

One family wearing Buff clothes had a handicapped child with them. It was very difficult for her to get up one row of steps to their seats so the mother and daughter sat in the front row. An usher had a long talk with the mother. There were only 4 seats in the row because it was a corner. Then the mother pulls out a camera with a huge lens. Back came the usher and the camera disappeared. Then came the people who had 3 of the 4 seats, so the usher did take the family to the end zone to some front row seats that were empty. With the curtains Iowa uses, I don't see how a handicapped person could see the game except on the monitors.

They don't charge for parking for the women's games but do charge for the men's games.

It sounded like the team was staying overnight as Zoe's family said they were going to the hotel to see her after the game before heading to the Des Moines area.

Massey ratings (usually a pretty good predictive tool) gives the Buffs a 53%chance of winning at Mizzou, with a projected score of 68 -66. They had had the Iowa match rated as about 75% chance to Iowa.

I am not surprised they gave Iowa a 75% chance of winning. We suck at 3 point defense and we missed too many free throws.

If the Mizzou score holes, I'm in for a better game than the Iowa one!
