Former CU assistant coach Greg Brown finds some redemption

Ringo picking a fight where there isn't one. Everyone knows that Brown is a damn good position coach. Congrats to him.

Agreed. The cupboard was bare so maybe it wasn't a fair assessment of him. But I think AZ also fired their staff when he was D coordinator too? I might be off on the timing of all that.

probably should never have been put in that position by his head coach.

Mike Stoops and co. were fired in the middle of Embree's first year, so Brown's first year back in Boulder as DC. Brown had gone to Arizona for the 2010 season to be co-DC with Tim Kish, the guy who ended up being the interim coach for that windy 2011 game in Boulder when Embree got his first Pac-12 win.

What do you all think of greg brown as a defensive coordinator? Seems like we were really lacking in fundamentals...... Which have been stresses by this staff, but still seem to be a problem. Tackle. Tackle. Tackle.

Will the defense be better this year??? Who would you rather have as DC. Baer or Brown?

Brown had a lot of things working against him. The biggest problem was that Hawkins and his staff, Brown included, dropped off significantly on the recruiting trail with DBs. Brown himself was an NFL guy and coached the positions well but was an older guy and not known as a huge closer in February. This meant his return to Boulder saw him having to choose 4 starting defensive backs from a pool of two dozen scholarship RMAC players , true freshmen, and walk ons.

The announcement of Brown's hiring came with a quote from either Brown or Embree detailing the job offer as Embree calling an old McCartney-era colleague in Brown and ol' Greg jumping at the opportunity. In decades of coaching it would be his first stand-alone coordinator role. And he'd also run the entire DB position grouping. So a first time head coach who had never been a coordinator hires an offensive and a defensive guy who between the two of them had a single year of co-coordinator responsibilities. Brown was simply in over his head in this respect.

Who would you rather have as DC. Baer or Brown?

I firmly believe Greg Brown would get a player like Ken Crawley to the next level with coaching. I'd still have to side with the guy who has spent most of his adult life being a defensive coordinator to run things though. That's where Baer has the edge.
