WBB hosting Long Beach State 12/30 at 7:00

Really big game for the Buffs right here. Not a pushover and they need some mo before their Bay Area start to the Pac-12 season.

9-6 Buffs at 1st media timeout (~13:30 to go in the half). (Beard-Fails with 6 of the CU points.)

Think I saw Lexy Kresl in street clothes, so she's evidently still out with her injury

Buffs now down 18-15 with ~8 minutes left in the half. Quite a few CU turnovers already (7). The Buffs shooting off so far- 1-5 from 3, and only ~35% overall, with seemingly no middle distance shots going down.

Buffs were down I believe 28-22, but get last 4 points to make it 28-26 at the half.

14-6 turnover disadvantage the big negative so far. Good play by the Buff bigs J. Swan (6 pts. on 3-4 shooting/ 6 rebounds) and Beard-Fails (8 points on 4-6, 4 rebounds). Frosh A. Hartmann also contributed 5 points late in the half.

Buffs very cold right now, and turnovers continuing (Buffs with 22 already vs. 9 for the Beach)- 45-32 LBSU with ~12 minutes left.

Buffs have it down to 45-38, thanks in part to technical on LBSU player. 9 minutes or so left.

Buffs end up on the short end of a 62-56 score.

OK Buffs- shake it off and bring it strong in conference. (Next game at Stanford and then Cal- good tough opponents to start conference play against.)

Really disappointing loss. I'm sad for Linda Lappe. I love that she's a great former Buff. I truly believe this is her dream job. Hopefully next years strong recruiting class and the return of Arielle will lead to better results. It does worry me that if we can't beat long beach state at home, how awful are the road losses in the Pac 12 going to be. And can we even defend the home floor in the Pac against the lower tier teams??

Is anyone else as disappointed as I am? I do think next year will be better. I realize Lexy Kresl was out. And of course Arielle is gone too. But shouldn't there be a deeper bench? Do we even have any players left from Kathy McConnell-Miller. It seems like KMMs recruits were better than. Linda's?

sorry to be negative. Just find this so frustrating as I had big hopes for this team!

Just back from the game. It was a disappointing game with how many times they turned the ball over often with light pressure. Very sloppy play. Team is really missing Lexy and Arielle. Long Beach only had 1 loss so far this season I believe to USC in overtime.

Watching them play this year, it seems our team is just sloppy. Good thing Rick George is focused on football now. I hope we surprise teams in the pac and exceed expectations. If we are picked 10th-12th and finish 10-12th next year, I think it's time for a new coach.

So hopefully with Arielle back next year and with the top 25 class, we will see a much better result next year? This season isn't totally lost yet, but I'm having to think about next year already.

This team desperately needs a good point guard. And neither Lexy nor Brecca meet that need. Lexy is the best we have. She is much better this season than last. I really hope she will be back on the court for the PAC opener this weekend. Brecca is a freshman who has potential but needs much work to learn how to play the point at this level. With how Coach Carey has helped Lexy improve, I'm optimistic that Brecca will improve as the season goes on also. Bur right now the team is missing the leader they need at the point.

Just saw the box score. We had 25 turnovers with many of them not forced. Long Beach had 11. Hard to win games when you aren't taking care of the ball.

Was at the game - my first game in person since last March.

To put a bit of perspective on the opponent, Long Beach State came in with an rpi of 30 and one loss, at home to USC. They have wins over Can and LSU at home. So there certainly weren't going to be a push over.

Now, I know CU didn't have Lexy or Arielle and one person above stated with one of them CU would have won by 10. I'm not sure that would have been the case. Perhaps, just maybe they could have won, but it still would have been tough. Why? Because they aren't consistently playing defense, are inconsistent on offense and don't exactly play with a great deal of urgency. I really don't think it's a huge lack of talent. But they aren't talented enough to go through the motions and win against decent teams. So I won't be going out on a limb to say this team won't be making the post season. Not playing as they are now.

There are most definitely some talented individuals on the team, most prominently, Jamee Swan. She is massively talented. Without her tonight CU would have lost by 20 or more. 15 points, 15 rebounds, 4 blocks and 2 assists in 29 minutes. Whatever she did be pulled from the starting lineup and thus less playing time Linda needs to rethink. She was sitting at the beginning of the second half when CU really could have used her.

Is one of the 3 new recruits (I think there are 3?) a Point guard?

Per http://www.cubuffs.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=600&ATCLID=209762907 , At least one (Kennedy Leonard) of the 4 incoming recruits is a point guard, and another (Alexis Robinson-don't know if she's a point right now or not?) is described as a combo guard who the article says "enters her senior campaign already the Kittens’ all-time leader in steals with 242 and on pace to challenge team marks for points, rebounds, assists and blocks.".

I would expect Ms. Thomas as a freshman to continually improve over the year, although we're seeing on both the men's and women's side so far this year it's not ideal if you're looking for big things too soon out of freshmen. (Her gaining experience now in non-conference for upcoming conference play might be one "positive" of Ms. Kresl being hurt, although of course it will be MUCH better if Ms. Kresl can come back sooner rather than later.)

Without at doubt Kennedy is going to come in with a shot at serious playing time at the point. She has the skills on the offensive end to make an immediate impact. Her current statistics at Carroll HS in Southlake, TX: 15.5 ppg, 7.9 apg, 6.4 rpg, 3.5 spg (according to Max Preps through 18 games). She played and started on one of the top club teams (Cy-Fair) in the country and if you have a chance to watch her highlights she will definitely catch your attention.

A good number of those turnovers were passes by Brecca or Jaz to someone who either wasn't expecting the pass or the pass didn't go where the receiver expected it to. So the pass ended up just going out of bounds and becoming LBSU's ball. I think that Lexy would have made a big positive impact in that area. So if you give CU another 6 or so possessions in which they actually got to the offensive end and had an opportunity to score points that alone might have been enough to change the outcome.

Since we're writing about Ms. Leonard anyway (and I can't find her recruit thread), thought I'd post this here- congrats to her for what sounds like a great week/ weekend-

From what I saw last night, if we don't get Kresl back soon, this season is over. While she may not be a true point guard, she is a leader on the court. The last two games, nobody is being the leader on the court. I'm very disappointed in Sborov's play this season. Reese's offense is either right on or not on. I realize she was double teamed a lot last night and that caused her not to get many shots. We don't have a consistent outside shooter and that is killing us. Jamee is a very talented player. I also don't understand why she isn't playing more. She can rebound and shoot and isn't afraid to bang around in the middle. Zoe Beard-Fails is improving every game.

However, no point guard is not going to result in a good season.

To answer the question about KMM's recruits, they are all finished with their playing days. This team is all Lappe's recruits.

From everything I can find online about Kennedy Leonard, she is having a fine senior season and will be a great addition to the Buffs next year.

Brecca had so many turnovers last night that Jasmine was playing point and that is not her position. I do think having Jamie Carey coaching the point guards is going to help them improve.

I think there was a good chance we would have won the game last night if Kresl had played. I don't know by how many points. Watching who other Pac 12 teams are beating, a 10th place finish is about right. If Kresl stays injured or anybody else gets hurt, it won't even be that high of a finish.
