Keys to the loss:

1. 23 bench points for ASU vs 10 for CU.

2. ASU shot over 55% for the game (were about 43% at half time).

3. ASU shooting overcame CU being +6 on OReb and +1 on TO for 7 extra opportunities.

Player of the Game for CU: Jaron Hopkins. 20 points on 7/11 shooting, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals and only 2 turnovers.

J-Hop is the beacon of hope for what the Buffs can become with a legit starting 5 if XJ and Josh can get healthy.

Bench point a bit deceiving since our main bench contributors were playing in the starting positions.

ASU couldn't hit a shot to save their lives before this game and then go for like 70% in the second half. Insanely frustrating.

ASU made us pay for TO's we did not do the same

J-Hop is finally getting it I hope. Need him to if Buffs hope to make a run to finish the season and get back in the conversation.

Yes on the bench. Fletch gave us 10 and Dustin 1. So you could say 21 from our bench players after spotting ASU 27 by not having XJ and Josh.

Either way no excuse to lose this game. CU is the more talented team. ASU just decided to finally hit all of their season 3's in one half.

Nothing would please me more than to have been dead wrong about JHop. I see a little light coming on with him, being aggressive on penetration and looking better when finishing. Hopefully once XJ and Scott come back, he doesn't lose that instinct to penetrate and make things happen. We desperately need it.

I think that Jhop Played well this road trip (at least the AZ portion, I forget what happened in SLC). It seemed like his issue was confidence, and perhaps playing in front of friends and family put him in a bit of a showboat-y mood and then he's like "well holy ****, I can play P12 BBall.

Lets hope his good play translates to the next game (wazzu?)

You just said in the game thread we need someone to penetrate to suck in the defense.

And your point is ...? You don't drive the basket to do one thing exclusively ... sometimes you're scoring, sometimes you're collapsing the defense and dishing. Either way, the defender has to respect your ability to finish. If they see you as a good finisher, they might double team more, freeing up someone. The point is ... we need a guard besides Ski to consistently put pressure on the defense, whether its finishing or shooting from outside. Maybe JHop will be eventually that guy ...

I misread your post. Carry on, Nancy

Hard to win, even against **** teams like ASU, when you are missing 2/3 top players on the team... and you get killed from outside like normal. Disappointing because it was a game they really, really needed to have.

But Hopkins did have a good game, so you have to be happy with his progression.

Jhop is a slowly awakening giant for us. Very excited for him. Now he needs to get consistent. Fletch deciding to man up would also be wonderful. This season is toast as far as NCAA tourney goes, and for a variety of reasons. But I'm hoping this pain is rewarded in the years ahead.

Our our only chance at the NCAA tourney is to win the pac 12 tourney. I realize it would take a miracle to beat Arizona or utah there but the way the pac 12 is, maybe we get lucky and they are both upset in the tourney. It's a real reach, I know, but would make up for this awful season, right?

Agreed, this road trip was interesting to see who wanted to show up and compete in the absence of XJ and Scott. Obviously Ski manned up, but I Was really impressed at the way DT and JHop competed, some of the other guys just kind of floated through the games. Also, Eli did a really nice job in spot minutes, pulled the trigger on a couple of good looks that didn't fall but rimmed out, boxed out when a shot went up, really did the little things and didn't try to do too much.

 JHop's play is what has me holding out hope for this season. The kind of guard play he can provide is exactly what we're missing. A Ski, Hopkins, Collier backcourt can take this team a long way in 2 months.

If they can somehow get healthy by the Utah game on Feb 7th, a top 4 spot isn't out of the question. Shutting down Scott for another couple of weeks and just letting him rest isn't a bad idea. The next 4 games are all winnable without him, but he's needed after that to make a late season push.

JMO, but Arizona and Utah are beatable in Boulder,

Scott needs to be in full health as well, not just playing - he really struggled a few games trying to play through the back pain. Agreed anyone is beatable in Boulder, but the CSU game was something of a shock. The Utah & UofA games in CEC will be key indicators of whether there's hope for the conference tournament. Getting healthy, playing smart, teamwork, persistent tough defense - all need to come together for the team to jell like we expected earlier. NCAA bid is remote, don't care (at all) about NIT, but player / team development and the conference tournament are holding my interest for now.

Ok 'any' is stretching it and 'beatable' doesn't mean even-odds. Better said 'any team remaining on the schedule,' still not meaning likely. It just wouldn't surprise me if the Buffs sweep the rest of the home schedule, IF they get healthy and play in accordance with their talent.
