Being CU's new DC - Career impact

There has been a lot of speculation as to why the search has taken so long. One argument is that potential coaches turn us down because the job could be a career killer or that maybe because Mac could be on the hot seat. I kind of take the opposite view that the CU DC job could be a career enhancer. I think the way I'd look at it, if I were in that position is that CU's defense is perched to make a big leap forward and that if they do, the new DC will get a ton of credit.

What do you guys think?

I think it depends on whether or not you buy into the returning talent. If you think they just need some seasoning and better coaching, you probably take the job as the bar has been set extremely low. If you think the returning talent is MWC at best, they'll be facing P12 offenses, and you see a solid departing 4 year starter at corner and the only decent LBer one hit away from retirement and you might think Baer was screwed and tossed under the bus.

Still, that only pertains to P5 guys with coordinator experience, position coaches will probably take whatever job they can get.

In the bball forum. I was wondering why nobody was posting,

I see it as a career enhancer too, furthermore HCMM seems like an awesome guy to work for. I'm not sure why they're having trouble finding a DC.

A coach in his 3rd year, coming off a 2-win campaign in which he went winless in conference and an AD that didn't hire him. I can see why some coaches may be leery.

It is a great opportunity, though. Pieces are in place to make a significant statistical jump on the defensive side. For someone moving up from a non-P5 DC job or getting promoted form P5 or NFL position coach, it's a great opportunity at a resume builder without much downside risk.

It is a great opportunity. Partisanship aside. PAC, new digs, and some pieces to work with.

Large dollars to boot.

Lots of awards in the trophy case. It'll work out.

I hope we don't backup the Brink's truck unless it's an outstanding DC. MM already gave his friends a payday and they weren't worth it.

In the agreement camp here. Come in and improve statistically (which is totally possible) and you have added to your resume. Improve the defense and MM still gets canned due to W /L, and your actually set up for possible promotion or at least retention.

With returning players and experience I see the D making improvement, even if Baer had returned. If he would have been a little more aggressive with some blitz schemes and taken some more chances? Our D would have been decent. That bend don't break D is just outdated with these offenses these days.

^^^^ Tea Leave reader.

The job has distinct upside in the longer term but you could also find yourself fired along with the HC at the end of 2016. Thats why I think RG should extend MM as a vote of confidence message to the coaching community. The other option would be to hire a HERO DC thats a lights out recruiter and give him larger money and or a slightly longer contract to show we're serious.

Anyone who comes here and looks at the talent and the upcoming schedule likely concludes that 4 wins is good, 5 wins is lucky, and 6 wins is rock star. Add in the coaches tenuous status with the AD and Its a dangerous proposition.

In the Utah game their QB escaped 4 defenders that were in the box and turned negative yardage into a 1st down. In that same game one of our defenders later tackled another defender that was about to get a sack. Maybe a better scheme helps them but you can't coach speed. The Jimmys and the Joes didn't look too good.

Dear god no. Only at CU.

Dear god no. Only at CU.

The situation is different. He's no Dan Hawkins.

If he anoints himself as DC and hires two position guys then that tells me the coaching world has a confidence issue with him or CU or both.

Other side of that coin, if you're Rick George, is that you're prolonging the turnaround for another year or two while you build enough reason to let him go. Cutting into fund raising momentum. And ticket sales.

While extending his contract wouldn't be popular with the masses, there is a damned good reason coaches in his situation get their contracts extended. The message sent to recruits and, in this case, potential coaches if they don't does more harm to the program than letting him flounder.

Its true we can't sink much lower. Whats two more seasons.

Frankly, I do not concern myself with it. But thanks for your input. Maybe we should start a list of "tired" subjects on this board.
More due to the fact we automatically roll over his contract every year to keep it at five years. Miami thinks we should add more. Just because.

That is just plain silly. MacIntyre got an extension last year so he has 4 years left on his contract. MacIntyre has to start earning any extension...he hired this staff in the first place.
