Dean Smith RIP

I thought this belonged in the BB forum. He was one of the all-time great ones. Everyone who knew him seemed to love him and more importantly respect him both on and off the court. I always remember Doug Moe talking about "Smitty" - Smith was not Moe's HC but was an assistant when Moe played and really saved Moe after the scandal.

I loved watching Smith's UNC teams and was a fan of the Tar Heels because of Smith. He was instrumental in integrating Southern BB.

We will miss you Coach Smith.

One of the giants. A rarity with him was how well-liked he was. Usually there's more animosity toward a guy who wins that much.

I thought this was really good.

Dean Smith broke the NCAA record for all time wins against the Colorado Buffaloes in the second round of the 1997 NCAA Tournament. The selection committee had it all set up for Smith to get the win against Bobby Knight, but Ricardo Patton's (and Chauncey Billups') Buffs went and ruined the story by destroying the Hoosiers in Round 1.

RIP, Coach Smith.

I remember Indiana wasn't playing all that great, and Knight didn't seem too concerned about it. Pretty sure he knew what Patton would have to deal with the next game.

And yeah, RIP Coach Smith. Some very well known players/coaches called him their mentor.

Down years didn't happen under Smith once he had that program up and rolling by year 5 or so. Reloaded every damn year.

I can't believe that this thread is only 7 posts long...if there were to be a Mount Rushmore of college basketball coaches, it would be John Wooden, and Dean Smith...everyone is playing catch-up. I am not a UNC fan obviously, but everyone reveres Dean Smith. I can't stand the four-corners offense, but Coach Smith was able to adapt and coach around the rule meant to limit his offense. He broke the color barrier in the ACC, and dared to be liberal in one of the most conservative states. I don't think it's any coincidence that Smith's players thrived in the NBA so well; he taught them great fundamentals (some better than others of course) and prepared them as men.

Coach K has broken many records and is the winning-est coach of all time in DI, but even with the reverance that K holds in college bball these days, even if MJ didn't hit his shot, even if CW didn't call timeout, Coach K currently trails Smith in my opinion. Wooden and Smith in my opinion have molded the game for the better more than anyone else. Rupp was a racist that doesn't deserve to be in the same breath, and Knight, although a great coach, had too much of a temper and not the social impact that Coach Smith had.

GTHCGTH... ...but not in this case. RIP in heaven Coach Smith.

I am totally in agreement with this post, particularly the part I bolded. Hated the 4 corners that eventually led to the shot clock being installed into the college game. I still remember driving a semi though Oklahoma listening to the 1977 NCAA Final between UNC and Marquette in which Smith went to the 4 corners with about a ten point lead with at least 8 minutes to go, and Al McGuire totally outcoached him and won the game as I was pounding the headliner in my truck going nuts.

And my probably irrational dislike for UNC basketball has been fed over the years by several instances of perceived wrongs against teams I've rooted for (Michigan, Eastern Michigan, CU). I particularly remember my undergrad alma mater (EMU) in the 1991 NCAA Sweet Sixteen getting jobbed when Eric (Pussy) Montross assaulted Marcus Kennedy and it was Kennedy called for the foul (not unlike the Josh Scott-Bitchinski situation from 2013). And the 1997 2nd round matchup between CU and UNC (wherein Smith was to set a record) seemed like a pre-determined outcome.

Nonetheless, and I didn't become totally aware of it until the fairly recently, i.e., the past few years, Smith's actions to integrate not just UNC basketball, but UNC and Chapel Hill in general, are indisputably admirable. I hated that Smith's teams seemed to always get the benefit of calls in games against teams I rooted for ... but I can still admire the man for the stand he took against blatant racism. RIP Dean.

Way cooler then what the Paterno trust did. He sent two guys to every players house to stick a finger in their ass.

What Dean Smith did for his former players is totally classy. Hopefully, the accounting firm tracks down all of them.
