Adam had a nice article for those paying subscribers. https://colorado.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1750854

Here are a couple things I noticed from spring ball:
  1. Absolutely terrified about our kicking game. Punting will be fine with Kinney, but he is still a tf so expect some growing pains. But my real concern is place kicking. I imagine every time Gonzales (presumably he wins the job and we don't want Kinney doing double duty) goes to kick, we will all be sh****** our pants. Goodman off the post style pants shi*****.
  2. Sefo said in an interview that he has gained a bunch of "good weight" but does anyone else think he looks a little thick, as in Big Ben type thick? Concerns me that his mobility is going in the opposite direction.

I'm not really sure you can make the claim that his mobility is going in the opposite direction with him adding weight, not that he is terribly mobile in the first place, but mobility isn't necessary to have a efficient offense that produces points and minimizes turnovers.

I think mobility is the great equalizer at the college level. Will be interesting to see how that portion of his game looks this year. PK almost has to be concern #1 right now.

It absolutely can be if used correctly, and I think that's where we are headed with Montez and Apsay being guys who can run and throw.

I wonder what Graham brings to the kicking game. Haven't seen either kicker attempt a FG in practice so I don't know. Graham for short range and Diego for the 40+ boomers?

How many yards did Sefo Rush for last season? Don't think it'll be a probably and if it makes it harder for defenders to bring him down like Big Ben then I'm all for it.

Add ST for my concerns, really. The offense will still put up points I hope and the d should be better. But with Neinas running ST I feel it's going to continue to be a cluster****. Shanked punts, bad PRs, bad KORs, bad KO coverage, bad PK. Special teams are going to be a disaster.

We aren't replacing the LS, right?

I'm pretty sure they bring a 4th person in for fall camp. Can't feel comfortable here.

First, Sefo's mobility is what it is. I also agree with Duff and it is the great equalizer and allowed Oregon and OSU to be very successful. However, this offense doesn't require it as evidence by SJSU QB 3 years ago. He moved a lot worse than Sefo and was very successful.

Next, if our kickers are bad and aren't likely to make anything beyond 40 and not even be 75% effective within 40, it SHOULD force MacIntyre to do what he should have done multiple times last year, go for it. Momentum or chances to win a game were often killed by a FG attempt (made or not). The staff has to be more aggressive when it comes to sticking their foot on the throat of the opponent. Examples:

CSU-On the 1 and settle for a FG to only go up 10-0 and Missed FG but if the Buffs score two TDs or a TD and FG at worse, they are up 17/21-0. CSU then just methodically picked us apart.
Cal-3 missed FGs, all were not on short yardage and should have been attempts but play calling killed our chance to put the game out of hand or step in front.
Oregon State State-Early 4th, 4th and 2 and a 44 yd FG is answered by a TD from OSU. Score a TD and you are down by 2. At the end of the game instead of having to score a TD, you can work your way down and kick a FG. That last drive was horrendous.
UCLA-Chance to win the game late 4th and we play for the tie. Same happens in OT. Settling for 3 cost us this game big time.
Washington-Chance to make it 24-10 late in the 2nd and we just settle for 3. Go into half only up by 3. Start second half and settle for 3, only up by 6 and Washington goes ahead and stays ahead after our awful late 3rd collapse.
Arizona-Momentum with a big D stop after Sefo gifts Arizona 14. Kick the shortest FG possible instead of punching it in. Down by 7 early 3rd w/ ball and Goal Situation and after a Off. PI, we run two short 2 yard pass routes to settle for 3. Get down by 11 and no hope instead of trading punches.
Utah-1st and 10 from the 13. Settle for 3 and instead of going up by 12 headed into half, we go up by 8. Utah gets within 2 and again we settle for 3, only leading by 5. Go down by 1 after a TD on ensuing drive. We give up on offense after being at the 50 twice and let our vaunted defense try to win the game.

The Buffs had chances in all 7 to really knock their opponents down and shut the door in at least 3 of those games. Instead they held the door open in all of them and let them all back in it. Instead of a 2-10 team, we would have more hope from a 5 win team.

Things that are priorities for next season:
1. Sefo's Turnovers, they HELPED cost us at least 3 games (Utah, UCLA and Arizona for sure and then ASU & OSU, Washington maybe as well)
2. Aggressiveness on offense. Our kicking game is a huge question mark, so don't put it in their hands. Plenty of examples above. I will not go through the multiple drive killers due to screens or swing passes that killed momentum
3. Defensive Progress-Sacks and Turnovers. Hoping Leavitt's hiring bring these but the Buffs lack of pressure led to a lot of island pass defense. I think this is a good secondary, but we are thin at LB and have question marks along the DL.

Key players-
1. Sefo-Cut down turnovers and he is the effective QB that can get you to at least a bowl
2. Kofavolu-He has to cause chaos. Tupou was supposed to be NFL good last year. He is a space taker and needs to focus on taking two guys out while the more athletic DL guys get to the QB.
3. RB Name TBD-I am not sure who it is. We have 3 solid choices coming in during spring to compliment Adkins II, Powell and Lindsay but we need a difference maker at times that we can guarantee 3 yards when needed and catch the damn
screen/swing pass.
4. Gillam-Needs to be healthy and weigh at least 225. Otherwise, he honestly cost a few scoring plays (see Cal and Utah I believe where he completely missed on a back in open space and they took off for 6) that I would rather see consistency like we had in Daigh. Unfortunately, we don't even know if we have a Daigh so he hopefully is healthy or RSs and allows someone the reps in fall camp.
5. Kinney-Kicking can be overcome in college. See Alabama still being good with ****ty kickers. Bad punting can't. Needs to average 40 on road and 45 at home and allow for coverage teams to set up (hang time).

I am being less optimistic this year, but the team has the ability to go 8-5. It also has the ability to go 3-10.

Is it for sure that Kinney won't be in competition for the PK duties? He was listed as P/K when he signed and I don't think they can afford to leave him solely at Punter.

I'll be the first to say it. What the hell is Neinas doing and why is he still here?

In six months, he's managed to look more fit, and a lot stronger. He looks tough, and durable. He's never going to be the type of QB who is running all around the field, but he still can manage to be nimble at 235 (according to the Spring game roster.) If anything he could stand to keep working, gain maybe another 5 pounds and keep shedding baby fat.

We should be excited that our starting QB, a kid who appears to have a bright future, dedicated himself in to hitting the weights this winter. We shouldn't be worrying about how this means he's not going to play as well. He'll be harder to take down, have a little bit more zip on his throws and be able to stay healthy better which all should have a positive impact on his performance. I'm stoked to see what he can do with another year of Spruce and more development from Fields et. al.

I swear, only Buffs fans would be like "Our QB looks too cut, is this a problem? I think he might be in too good of shape."

I think I remember Mac saying Kinney would come in and compete at both kicker and punter. I think their original thought was he would be a punter only, unless we have major issues at kicker, which looks to be the case.

When AB members aren't freaking about our 3rd string QB losing 5 lbs, they are freaking out about our starting QB "looking a little thick" and even making negative comparisons to a top 10 NFL QB Ben Roethlisberger. :wow:

I don't know whether the added weight is a good thing or a bad thing. My guess is it won't make much difference. One thing I do know is Sefo does not look "cut" in those images. I don't even know how you could reach that conclusion.

Whine Much? If Neinas wasn't the ST coach, what would you have to bit*h about? ST's were middle of the road last season and actually improved from the year before, in all measurable aspects, despite your detestation of Toby.

KORs were fine, middle of the Pac; PRs okay, no TOs, (very few teams break for returns on punts anymore, just doesn't happen); KO coverage, middle of the Pac, always improves after the first couple of games; shanked punts are on the player, as are line drive punts, ala UW game, especially a Sr punter.....

Now, FG game is scary right now, I grant you, Kinney may be forced to handle stuff inside the 40. Outside the 40, if its real bad, that will force HCMM to take more chances on 4th down. I'd rather see 'em go for it more often than not anyway.

What happened to your unwavering support of Mexican Sebastian Janikowski?

Toby needs to go. CU continues to reek of cronyism and nepotism.

Kicking is a big concern, but it isn't the top concern in my book. We can always go for it on 4th down and convert 30-40% of the time or give the ball back on their end of the field. The biggest concern I see is the LB corps. Can we force teams into punting consistently? Too many drives have ended in points for the other team - we can overcome poor kicking, but not poor LB play.

An improved DL and a healthy secondary can somewhat negate poor LB play. If the kicking game is poor, not really many good options to hide that weakness.

So Neinas' strategy of googling "Top rated kickers/punters/snappers" and offering the top guys didn't work out? What a surprise

Our place kickers have the talent to get the job done. NFL talent but not NFL consistency(mechanics). May I remind everyone we haven't had a 75+% + fg kicker in a long time. If my memory serves me correct, doesn't fail me too often. Finally, I'm excited for the guys to get an opportunity to kick in game situations. If one doesn't get the job done then the next, if he doesn't work there are a lot of good kickers on campus...no lie. Have a great night buff nation and relax it's just special teams right...? lol.

I agree that our DL should be better and the secondary should be a strength. That said it is hard to hide weakness on defense and I have a hard time seeing LB being anything but a weakness, even if it stays healthy. With injuries it could be a disaster.

I'd love to see Sefo be more effectively mobile but that isn't him. Hopefully with better talent at RB and the changes on the OL the running game will be more of a threat taking pressure off Sefo.

If we can more consistently run the ball and by reducing pressure on Sefo make a significant cut back on turnovers and on short possessions we can take some pressure off the defense as a whole. Even getting a few longer rest and the offense gaining a couple first downs can change how the defense plays a great deal.

Full disclosure requested as to your relationship with any of the kickers. Seems like I remember you coached one of our kickers?

Did I miss Gonzalez getting injured?

Gonzalez has seemingly been injured since he was eligible to play. The apparent excuse for why he was not exclusively handling kickoffs from the start last year and then for why he wasn't putting them in the stands with each kick. I don't recall ever hearing a report that he was at 100%.
