'16 CO OLB Carlo Kemp (Signed to Michigan)

Some people have a sense of community that keeps them home, some have a desire to get away. It's not Colorado specific. Are you twits just trying to hedge against possible disappointment, or are you encouraging Kemp and others to go elsewhere?

I'm from Colorado and I went to CU but I doubt I would want to go to CU if I grew up in Boulder. It would be nice to get atleast a car ride away from the parents for college lol.

My son is a junior in high school and doesn't want to go to CU or Mines due to the proximity to home.

I can see the desire to see something new, but campus can be a bubble that you rarely leave whether your parents live 20 minutes away or across the country. And with so many out-of-state students, you can definitely meet people from all over and not feel like you're still in high school.

If I were the coaching staff, I'd be pointing to a guy like Chauncey Billups. The guy was unbelievably successful at all three levels (HS, College, Pros) in the state of Colorado and probably is one of the most beloved sports figures in the state as a result. You don't always get the chance to do that. it's a very good reason for staying home.

Personal preference thing.

If I remember back to the algorithm that was put together to predict where football recruits would sign, the strongest influencer was whatever was the closest major program. It was a very good predictive model. I forget what university it was and I'm not sure if they're still doing it (somewhere in the northeast).

The bigger factor in Kemp's recruitment is the connections to the NFL through his uncles. I know that is why UCLA appeals to him.

It'd be nice to finally get the top recruit in CO for once and a Top 300 kid. He's VERY versatile and would flourish in a 3-4 scheme. After he sees the buffs in a bowl this year he'll see the light.

Don't get your hopes up, based on a recent update, he sounds intent on going OOS.

Interesting he came up with those specific teams from him.

I meant keep him in state.

The answer is the same.

It'll take a minor miracle to keep this kid, I'm afraid. Unfortunate. I wish he could see the benefit of staying, but Fairview kids are notorious for skipping town. I'll never understand that.

I completely understand wanting to leave Boulder. Especially when a team with the tradition and prestige of UM comes calling. I just hope JL can give him something to think about.

I don't mind the desire to get out of town, but one of his last updates gave me the impression that he was grouping CU with CSU together like they're both in the in the Mountain West, in that they just aren't big enough programs. That's depressing.

People talk about this kind of thing and my immediate thought is "Chauncey Billups". There's a guy who literally could have gone anywhere he wanted. Kansas, North Carolina, Duke, Indiana, Kentucky - he could have gone to any of them. He stayed home and is now a member of the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame. Ever heard of a guy named Chucky Sprolling? He was Chauncy Billups before Chauncey Billups was around. Sprolling went to St. Johns to play hoops and nobody ever heard of him again.

I'm venting, but this kind of stuff annoys the bejesus out of me. Kemp is a linebacker who could come to CU and be coached by one of the best linebacker coaches in the country and all we keep hearing is how much he supposedly wants to leave the state. Maddening.

I think down the line a lot of kids realize this but when you are 17 years old you get starry eyed when UCLA, Michigan and Stanford come to your door. There is still a lot of time for his thought process to change as a decision this big about your future gets harder and harder when it comes down to the time to make it.

I hear ya, Sacky, and I agree as a selfish fan. We live in a different time of CU athletics than when Chauncey came to CU, though, and kids have different mindsets, motivations, goals, dreams, etc. To Kemp, CU is a program that draws ~50k (generous) fans per game and seemingly trades wins vs CSU every other year, loses to Sac State, Montana State, goes winless in P12 play and has become irrelevant on the national landscape. It's maddening because you and I remember winning football in Boulder and how awesome it can be, and we just don't understand how any in state kid doesn't share the same passion for CU.

That was the thing about Adam's interview with Barry Remington that was awesome to hear. He took ownership of the program being where it was and wanted to change it instead of looking down on it and leaving the state. Kemp could be part of the solution (staying) instead of part of the problem (leaving).

Stop the bull****. Leavitt is the BEST LB coach in the nation. Nobody touches his credentials.

Not really. He made it pretty clear that he wasn't too interested in CSU and wouldn't be because of the conference affiliation.

"That's kind of hard, because they had a very good season last year and I expect them to do well again," Kemp said. "It's just, for me, playing in the Mountain West Conference is not something I want to do. I want to go out there and play in one of the Power Fives now. That way I can really go out there and prove myself, coming from Colorado, where typically we don't really get a lot of respect. I want to prove that I can play with anyone from everywhere."
