With the three new bowls, there will be a record 42 bowl games, including the College Football Playoff title game, requiring 82 teams to fill each bowl this season. Nearly 65 percent of the 127 FBS teams will play in a bowl game after the 2015 regular season.

Matchups for the new bowls are as follows: Tucson (Mountain West versus Conference USA), Austin, Texas (American versus Sun Belt) and Orlando (American versus Sun Belt).

Must see tv!

Now that the SEC teams have to play one less patsy each year and the other P5 conferences are going the same way we are likely to start seeing more Sun Belt and American Conference teams bowl eligible. Don't remember when it was a number of years back the Sun Belt only had one bowl eligible team and that one was barely. They had all lost their $$$$$ OOC games then knocked each other off in conference.

On the bright side, if we get to 6 wins there's no way we aren't bowling.

If the choice is watching New Mexico vs Appalachian St or listening to my extended family bicker over Christmas break, I choose the former.

Participation ribbons for everybody.

I don't know if it's that. These bowls make a lot of money. Teams aren't really getting rewarded for "participation" they're making deals with bowl sponsors. Players get free stuff and a bowl game, school gets money and prestige and the bowl sponsors rake in a big profit.

It's all about the $$$$

For the networks and the bowl organizers. For many of the conferences and teams, it's a cost they look at as part of the marketing budget since it's a great opportunity to promote a program/conference that's almost never on a national broadcast.

I would rather have high quality games, with an 8 team playoff. Then some non p5 teams battle in early December.

65% of teams in bowl games. Sure, bowls are fun, but this has gone way overboard over the last 5-10 years. At some point we're going to run out of 6-6 teams to fill these slots. So, if it means we get a waiver and go bowling at 6-7 this season when no one else can fill the spot, I'll take it ;)
