MacIntyre promises better football days ahead for CU

From The Gazette in the Springs.

Some interesting stuff in there, including a bit of enlightening stuff about the state of the program at the time MacIntyre was hired. Barnett weighed in on the effect that becoming a national embarrassment had on galvanizing support for football to an unprecedented level at CU.

There is hope again.

Here's a bit on the hiring process with MacIntyre in 2012:

By 2012, MacIntyre had lifted San Jose State to a 10-2 record and a national ranking. He was preparing for a bowl game when he started receiving phone calls from CU leaders.
They offered a simple question:
Are you interested in coaching the Buffs?
No, MacIntyre said.
"I had a great thing going," MacIntyre said. "We had just built the best San Jose State team in the history in the school. It had been a tremendous amount of work."
His phone kept ringing. At first, MacIntyre looked at the reality in Boulder and saw what he calls "the worst BCS program in America."
But as he lingered on the view, he began to see the possibilities. CU leaders promised big changes and convinced him to accept the challenge.
CU leaders weren't making an empty pitch. MacIntyre works in a freshly built $156 million football complex with a 16,000 square-foot locker room and an 8,000 square-foot players' lounge.
"The best football facility in America," he said.

If Coach Mac I can get past the Embree issue, you'd think that AZ could too.

Interesting piece about the new support for the program.

Cool beans, thanks Nik. Despite all the complaints about recruiting I think we are on our way out of the forest and into the clear. It is just going to take a while.

Hope barnett is right. I hope that there has been an institutional shift in thinking about football. The popular descriptor of CU as a sleeping giant is quite true. I hope HCMM is the guy to stop hitting snooze.

I cringe when I think about what Bohn's unreasonably loud, overly salesy sales pitch must have sounded like to prospective candidates in 2012.

Very telling stuff from the leadership that sold MM on the job (and it wasn't just Mike Bohn). This reinforces my opinion that they are going to give HCMM the necessary time to see this through, for better or worse. He will get more than 3 years, no doubt about it.

Keep in mind the leadership has changed since MM was hired. Stagnation, or even regression this year and MM will be gone.

Disagree. The athletic department leadership has changed. The institutional leadership remains.

It will all be about context, but as long as he gets 4-5 wins, I believe he'll be here in 2016.

And who does MM work for?

They all work for the institution of the University of Colorado.

Look, I just simply don't believe they will continue the revolving door at Head Coach. At some point, you have to show the college football world that any coach that is hired to rebuild this program will be given the resources (which MM now has) and the TIME, to see it through. Otherwise, it is going to create a slippery slope when trying to hire the next guy.

"I think Mike has the best chance of any of us in the past 60 years," Barnett said. "We never had that continuity of support. He's got that now."

Interesting line

Yes and no, because Rick George didn't hire him. IF he fails spectacularly like 3 - 10 or 2 - 11 with regression on the field and the same level of recruiting we won't have trouble finding the next guy, a lot more to sell them right now than 2012 because things are tangibly there. If Mac is respectable this year 5 - 8 (no matter how you look at it, that record gets in a better place than last year) minimum and steps recruiting up a bit, with the small class he will have some leeway here, then he is safe for another year. If he is better than what I just mentioned we will dance in the streets and burn couches.

Sounds to me like Benson has not only opened his check book, but has ordered the dogs to stand down on the academic side.

Did anyone ever encounter faculty with these thoughts on athletics? I was in the B school until 2013 and they were always very supportive of college athletics. I can understand the sociology teachers being bitter but that is at every school.

I personally never had a problem with it, but being a member of the band, I know plenty of people that had to fight with professors to get clearance to travel to away games. Often times having to get the AD himself involved.

Also every time there is a friday night game members of the faculty bitch and moan about how it "disrupts the purpose of the university"

That's because most of the football players in the B School don't have a problem with academics in the first place. I was an Econ major, graduating in 2010, and the lack of ****s given about football in that department is strong to quite strong.

Sorry but the school leadership has changed drastically along with the AD

I'm still in a "show me" mode when it comes to Dr. Phil. However, I do like what I'm seeing from the University. I have concerns that it's not sustained support. I worry that they will sit back and say "hey, you got your shiny new facility, now go fill the stadium". There's still a lot of work to do, facility wise. I don't know if CU has a full appreciation for how much still needs to be done.

Who?

Benson, DiStefano, Hybl, Griego, Bosley, etc. have all been in their positions since before MM was hired.

Benson's legacy is tied now to the demise of football. He wants/needs to fix that. Benson's priorities have shifted and therefore everyone else's priorities have shifted. Whether or not that is sustained is still to be seen.

That's not at all the mindset

Sacky has ever right to be skeptical. Until proven otherwise, that has been the operating mentality of the admin for a long long time. I hope it has changed. I really do. But Benson is a politician, and one of the worst kind and DiSteph is his lap dog. Firmly in show me mode like Sacky is.

I share the same concern. My fear is what happens at the first sign of adversity (couple brushes with the law, players lost due to academics, bad semester for APR, minor NCAA infraction, etc.). Will the administration stay steadfast in their support, or turtle on the AD?

Well, we've already seen brushes with the law and players deal with academic issues (non who have been completely lost). A bad semester for APR right now would still be better than most years in the past, as everything across the board is at an all time high. The reaction to NCAA infractions is a valid point, and a huge unknown. Hopefully, the only time we see their reaction to something of that nature is a few years down the road after a 10-2 type of season.

You fit donate $10M of your own money if you're not committed to investments in an area. It's fine that people are skeptical, but that's not the mindset.

We're largely ignored by the press right now, which is probably ok, but when the program becomes relevant again bad news will be more public and the track record of this administration has been to do whatever they can to avoid bad press usually at the expense of supporting the program. At some point it's inevitable that the situation will arise again, and I'm really curious if the admin approaches it differently the next time around.

I understand that Benson has put his money where his mouth is in on the project and I applaud him for it. However the concern is whether or not he understands this is not a 1 time deal. There is a lot of work to be done and not even just with football.
