BOULDER – University of Colorado head lacrosse coach Ann Elliott announced the hiring of Kailah Kempney as assistant coach on Thursday.

“I am excited to announce the addition of Kailah Kempney to our staff at Colorado,” said Elliott. “Kailah is an unbelievably talented lacrosse player, who has a great passion for playing and teaching the game. Coming from Syracuse, Kailah knows what it takes to compete for championships and has learned from one of the biggest names in lacrosse in [Syracuse head coach] Gary Gait. I am looking forward to the perspective and energy Kailah will bring to our program. She will be an incredible asset to all of our players on a daily basis.”

Kempney makes the move to Boulder after finishing a stellar four-year playing career at Syracuse this past May in which the Orange combined for an impressive 74-19 record. During her time as a student-athlete, she competed in a program-record four consecutive Final Fours and made two National Championship appearances.

Wow...We had two top assistant coaches in Nielson and Magarity and now they have seemingly disappeared from the program replaced by two very young assistants. I have Googled Nielson and Magarity and found nothing about them being hired elsewhere. Maybe they are still on the staff but I doubt it....that would be 4 assistants. But no word coming out of Head Coach Elliott about them leaving. I would imagine that a women's lax assistant coach at CU or anywhere doesn't make enough money to even rent a studio apartment in or near Boulder. I feel badly for the players with the turnover of both assistants if that's the case. Anyone know what the deal is?

I couldn't find anything on them except that both were holding camps in the Philly area.

Nielson and Magarity gone as lax assistants?

Thanks for checking, I saw that too when Googling. The CU Lax Twitter and Facebook pages rarely post anything so there's no help there. The Lax program seems pretty secretive in general compared to other programs elsewhere or at CU, or maybe they're just not into the social media stuff. As I mentioned, it's never a surprise if an assistant leaves for a better situation, but to have both assistants leave at the same time with no news that they've landed elsewhere makes me wonder if they left out of frustration or were fired. If the Head Coach doesn't announce what the deal is, I'll ask Rick George. Definitely not good for the players or program when (if) both assistants leave at once.

As I mentioned in what is currently the last post of the http://www.allbuffs.com/showthread.php/107923-Frank-Named-Assistant-Lacrosse-Coach thread (see that for more detail), I did find strong evidence that Ms. Magarity probably has left the Buffs (I assume to go back to her home area of Philly), as I found a tweet announcing that she's become the head coach of a Philly high school team, and she also seems to have been named the director of a lacrosse club back there.

I haven't been able to find anything definitive about Ms. Nielsen yet. (Just quoting my own note (for convenience) I originally put in the above thread-
"(Note- the 2015/16 coaches page for cubuffs lacrosse ( http://www.cubuffs.com/SportSelect.d...&Q_SEASON=2015 ) also doesn't list Hannah Nielsen, the other Buff assistant since the start of the program, as an assistant this year. However, from what little I can see (articles describing her as (still) being a CU assistant while assisting at a camp of Ms. Magarity's this summer, her twitter description), Ms. Nielsen appears to still be a Buff's coach. There were also some issues with her not being listed as a coach in prior years until recently, so I'll assume her current exclusion is just a webpage error unless/ until other info becomes available.)"

Since Ms. Kempney is a VERY recent grad and could possibly be a grad assistant level coach, I wouldn't say her hiring is any kind of definitive evidence that Ms. Nielsen is no longer a Buffs coach.

I do agree with what I think others may be saying that it would be nice if any article announcing a new coach would briefly describe why there's an opening (old coach leaving to do X, new grad assistant opening, etc.).

Per the below Instagram, Assistant Coach Nielsen has left the Buffs. Best of wishes to her. (From one of the commenters (looks to be a USC assistant coach), sounds like she is going to somewhere in Southern Cal.?)

On the (VERY) bright side, Coach Elliott has seemed to have a great plan for success, and executed it well, from when she arrived in Boulder 3 or so years ago. Assume she and the new coaches will just keep building from what has already been accomplished with their great and still young players (the 1st class are still of course just juniors this coming year). The team so far has only exceeded my expectations. Admittedly not knowing anything about lacrosse, I was expecting (as seems to happen to most new D1 programs) mainly blowout losses for the 1st year or two. Instead the team has gone 22-15 in its first 2 years while not shying away from playing some of the top programs in the country. In conference play, it has made it into and advanced to the 2nd round of the conference championships in both years of its existence.
