Steve Patterson´s future as Texas AD in doubt

Sources: Texas President Fenves weighing Patterson's Future

It´s from the Chipster

Some key points

The sources told HornsDigest.com one of Fenves' top concerns is the number of donors - small and large - who have expressed they will no longer give to athletics as long as Patterson is in place.

“Fenves knows athletics is the front porch of the university,” one source close to the situation said. “So he can’t have people who want to give being turned off or turned away at the front porch.”

Multiple sources told HornsDigest.com Fenves has outlined for his athletic director numerous complaints that have been brought to Fenves’ attention about Patterson, who is in the third year of a guaranteed five-year deal paying him roughly $1.4 million annually.

Those complaints have come from dozens of angry donors, including some of Texas’ top givers, sources said. Those donors feel Patterson is running UT like a cold, unfeeling pro sports franchise that views UT faithful as faceless customers – not passionate alums.

As a result, 10,000 football season ticket holders didn't renew for 2015 after an average cost increase of 21.5 percent, coming off a 6-7 season and a five-year record of 36-28.

According to sources, the recommendation of UT's search firm - Korn/Ferry International - was then-West Virginia AD Oliver Luck. Patterson was an outside candidate recommended to former Texas president Bill Powers by Jeff Hunt, a Texas graduate working as the paid media consultant to the Pac-12, Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott and the Pac-12 Network.

Sources said Fenves has basically given Patterson a directive to repair any damaged donor relationships or communications and to basically make Fenves’ email stop filling up and his phone stop ringing.

But that hasn’t happened, sources close to Fenves say.

It takes a special type of person to deal with all the ass kissing necessary to succeed at UT....

In before Texas is going to steal Rick George thread.

Don't think they are smart enough to even look at him.

They want a big hat. Somebody who can claim a lot of wins and will make a splash. Rick worked in Texas and could be a very good candidate but it won't happen.

I think this situation is a little different just because RG has good connections within the state. It isn't the typical we love RG thread and are worried about every opening across the nation. JR seems to know a lot more about the situation down there than any of us though.

RG seems to be more the Patterson type on paper. UT will be looking for the good ol' boy type.

I miss the moving emojis. This thing needs to roll!

Less actually. Though that applies to most topics.

Patterson's future at UT in doubt. In other news today, the sun rises in the east and water is wet.

The splash name and connection to the school put blinders on them to where they wouldn't even consider that a guy whose exit polling at his past employers had him as one of the least likeable dudes ever might rub some big money donors and longtime staffers the wrong way. Oops.

Is there no bad blood between UT and Brown for the way things ended? IIRC, he purposefully waited until UT's first two coaching targets re-upped with their current schools to retire.

At any rate, if somebody like Charlie Strong is on the market at the end of the season I'd be really interested how the season plays out for CU if I'm RG.

Does anyone think if they had a better AD they could have pulled Saban from Alabama?

Maybe. Seems like Patterson came in and kind of dampened the chatter that had been going on between Texas and Saban's agent:
Patterson says he believes he knew what Sexton was up to. “I’ve known Jimmy for 30 years,” he says. “I told him if he wanted to come here and drink bourbon and eat barbecue and talk about Saban, that’d be fine. But I told him not to come here if he just wanted to get Saban an extension and a raise at Alabama, which I thought was his intention all along.

“Of course, Jimmy took great affront to that, which is fine. He was just doing his job. But that was the end of the conversation. I never talked to Saban and we never made an offer.”

Long, but good read on what was happening behind the scenes: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/07/26/s...suit-of-nick-saban-alabama-vs-texas.html?_r=0

It´s not the point of this chart, but I´m absolutely dumbfounded that 40k of UT´s 57k season ticket holders in 2014 had season tickets costing 6k+.

You could look at it that way I think, or you could blame Dodds for not forcing the issue. I remember there being a fight between Dodds and the President over Mack, and then on top of that there were regents trying to get rid of the president. Texas has really been a sh*tshow.

????

Tier 1: $550 / season
Tier 2: $525 / season
Tier 3: $450 / season
that covers all but 13,537 of all season ticket prices.
Still, higher than most of CU season ticket prices.

I don't know who did the math in the chart, but the increase based on the totals in the final row is 17.7%. They played some funny games to get to 21%. Either way, that's a big increase.

Also, it has been well documented before that the Texas AD brings in more cash total than any other school. So, Patterson's methods don't really make much sense, unless he was given a mandate to squeeze that much more.

Something about that chart has to be off, I agree. It´s from here
