The Buffs will be trying to get to 3-0 at its own Omni Invitational as they face the George Mason Patriots (GMU) in a breakfast time contest starting at 9:00 AM Sunday.

About the Patriots (from cubuffs.com tournament preview article- http://www.cubuffs.com/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=210350332&DB_OEM_ID=600):

"
...
George Mason is 5-6 entering the invitational and is 1-4 in the last five contests. The Patriots have three players averaging over 2.00 kills per set with Morghan Martin (2.82), Mara Barkley (2.33) and Tiffany Clarke (2.28). GMU is hitting .180 and its opponents are hitting slightly better at .194. Montana Green and Caitlyn Hipsher are both averaging 8.35 assists per set. Erica Partridge leads the defense with 2.93 digs per set. Lola Owokoniran has a team-best 1.38 blocks per set this season and Clarke is adding 1.15.
...
"

Note- Since that preview was written a couple days ago, GMU was swept by the Air Force at the Academy yesterday (Friday), but just bounced back in a match held early this afternoon in Boulder and defeated Weber State 3-1. CORRECTION- As it often does, looks like livestats had teams and players switched, and Weber State actually defeated GMU 3-1.

Live Video- Free live stream of the match should be available at http://pac-12.com/live/university-colorado .

Unless the Buffs decide to shoot themselves in the foot, this one should be a 3 set sweep and GMU should be held under 20 points in each set.

Match has started and stream looks good. Buffs up 10-5 early.

Great to hear it sounds like the Pep Band is making its 1st appearance of the year at a vball match!

Buffs get the 1st 25-15.

Aidan Lea came in late with the goodsize Buff lead as a sub in the Middle, so looks like they may be looking to move her back to her "regular" (high school) position.

15-11 CU. TO gmu. (Buffs look to be giving some different players a look this match. S. Shadley started this set in place of A. Austin.)

21-20 CU. TO CU (Joslyn Hayes has come in as a leftside the last few points. Great sign for the rest of the season.)

Pretty brutal stats so far. Buffs only hitting .125, with G. Simpson at -.125 on her 5 kills, and K. Cuff hitting -.667 with 5 errors and only 1 kill. I'm only half watching the match while doing other things, but I believe passing fell apart late that set, which I'm sure (as usual in volleyball) is a large part of the hitting issues.

Set 3 starting. A. Austin is back to starting this set. (Looks like they may have wanted to give her most of this match off if the score allowed it, as she only had 2 kill attempts (both converted) in set 1, and didn't play at all in set 2.)

Thanks for the update. I'm running around Boulder this morning, and used Regent as a shortcut. Felt a tinge of guilt for not being in there. Maybe I'll hit the soccer match this afternoon.

I'm sure what was a spirited "pep" talk by Coach Kritza at the break after set 2 worked well- Buffs get set 3 25-6.

What a schizophrenic.match. (Assume the early start isn't helping any.) Buffs down 9-4 to start the 4th. TO CU

Buffs with a spirited comeback- now 17-18 gmu lead. TO gmu (Not there, but assume the gmu coach isn't a happy camper. He questioned 2 touch calls in a row by his blockers, and his team was just called for a rotation violation.)

Note- The Buffs are playing in a 6-2 for the 1st time in many matches.

Phew- Buffs get the set 26-24 and match 3-1. These morning matches often seem to breed upsets; glad the Buffs avoided one.
(I was having flashbacks to the Wyoming match a couple years ago, and what an extra hole that loss put the Buffs in as far as qualifying for the NCAA tournament was concerned, and made the tournament selection show WAY more exciting than it otherwise would have been.)

I wonder why Austin was held out of Set 2. It appeared they needed her.

It was great to see Hayes back playing.

I am very impressed with Abu. That woman is going far in this game.

George Mason came to play before they headed home and were hoping to pull off an upset. Their coach was very upset in the 4th set when she called the timeout. Was glad to see the Buffs get this one. George Mason has a first year coach who played for Wisconsin. Wisconsin plays in the Big 1G and had some pretty good volleyball teams. Don't know where all she has coached, but GMU is going to win some matches this season.

Did you read the article on Abu in this morning's Camera?

That was a great article on Abu. Really shows how far she has come and makes you wonder how much further she can go.

As for Austin, I think the coaches were just trying to give her some rest and give the bench players some game time. But in set 2, coach did so much pulling players out and putting others in that I think she was a big part of the Buffs problem with why they lost that set. You could see hesitancy in some of the plays like the players weren't sure who was to do what with the mixed up lineups the coach had on the floor.

At the time I wrote that I had not seen the article on Abu in the Camera. I have now and I believe even more that the sky is the limit for her at this point.

There is a Daily Camera article ( http://www.buffzone.com/buffzonetop...lleyball-buffs-roll-through-omni-invitational ) reporting on the Buffs matches yesterday, and the very start of it worryingly says "Given some struggles with nagging injuries, senior Alexis Austin hasn't quite been herself lately." Hopefully the injury/ injuries aren't anything too bad (or painful for her as it relates to her personal life), and her VERY good performance last night against Air Force indicates they may not be anything that keeps her from being a top performer in conference play. I know last year she was even more lightly played in non-conference matches with some nagging injury/ injuries than this year, but it/ they obviously didn't keep her from having a great conference season culminating in her earning All Pac-12 1st team honors. (Looking at last year's stats, she only played in 17 of 54 sets in non-conference play, but was then able to play in all 78 conference sets.)

Here's to those injuries going away for Alexis. I know all athletes play with injuries. She did look like her usual self against Air Force.
