Impact of watching differently when not the Buffs

I know that when I'm watching a Buffs game I notice every missed throw, every missed cut, every missed tackle, every questionable officiating call, every missed block, every dropped pass, every time the DL is moved to create a hole, etc., etc.

When I watch any other teams play, I sort of notice that stuff but it isn't a big deal since that stuff goes on for and to both teams in every game. I tend to notice and focus more on the playmaking when I don't have a strong rooting interest.

Case in point: kickoff lands at the goal line and is returned to the 24. It's a play I don't really notice in other games unless there's a big hit, but in a CU game it's a blood pressure spike followed by relief.

What I'm getting to is that I know I'm a lot more critical of the Buffs and probably overrate opponents since I'm mostly noticing their playmakers. Kind of a weird thing, because I've somehow become the opposite of a homer. My perceptions lead me to downgrading the Buffs and to upgrade the coming opponents.

Good post.

We always tend to be more critical of our own teams, every mistake or bad break makes us more upset, every big play or flash of ability makes us more hopefull.

We have been freaking out over Sefo seeing repeated mistakes etc. We'd all love to have an NFL prospect but watching the past few saturdays I am certain a lot of teams would be happy to have Sefo.

We get further jaded because we have sucked so bad for so long that we have come to expect disappointment. We keep looking for our weaknesses expecting the other shoe to fall

.

I think it goes both ways. I sometimes watch games and read way too much into a team having an off night. Other times I read way too much into a team playing the best game of their season.

Watching the Pac-12 games last night, it shows how things can snowball quickly on a bad night.

The corollary is the difference in watching live vs on TV. I notice things live, like open receivers, that I don't see on TV and visa versa, like missed or blown penalties. Some of the anger I had toward the officials live at the CSU game kind of dicipated watching the replay.

Defense mechanism.

A lot of fans on AllBuffs display the opposite of the fundamental attribution error.

Any other college football game I just watch for the entertainment value. Love to see mistakes, great plays, momentum turns and the tradition that is college football. It's just a lot of fun for me. I have no investment in the game.

A CU game and I am on pins and needles. Much like Nik, I notice everything and I am so wound up I wonder if I actually enjoy the experience at times. Of course, I do but my attention to everything is about 10,000x what any other game would be.

I know that would change if the Buffs were in the hunt for a playoff spot and needed a team or two to lose so they could slide in but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

Besides CU what players on other teams can you name? Or who do you follow? You end up following the Andrew Luck types. This year it's Boykin, Chubb and Fournette (so far). They get the most exposure. Mariota was it last year. I can't name anyone on Oregon's squad, except Lockie (who is turrible), and we play them this week.

So when the punter screws up a snap or a kicker misses a kick on another team you say "that's college football" (I'm looking at you UT). We don't think "that punter is a collsoal screwup that only manages a 4.1s hangtime and averages 35 yards per punt" simply because we don't take the time to look it up, because we don't care.

But as I watch the NFL today I remember why I enjoy CFB as much as I do. It's the overthrown passes or missed assignments or missed field goals or bad punts or a guy that rushes for 350 yards. They are amateurs and with that brings a level of excitement, and sometimes anxiety, that I don't get from the pros. But mind you, this isn't little league also so things like participation ribbons aren't handed out and criticism is fair.

We'll be like this when we are good again. Things won't chanage much. Some people will think we will challenege for a playoff spot going 9-4 the year before and others will predict 4-8. We'll lament the losses we had and neglect the # of returners from other teams or how they recruited.

Allbuffs needs to get its chakra points aligned and use positive energy to attract wins. Leavitt gets it.

People always talk about the parity in the NFL, but the parity in CFB is awesome. Much better than the pros. The teams in the playoffs will consistently be the sameish teams, for the most part (except the SEC tends to have more rotation).

The men on the field are anywhere froma young 18 to as old as 23, with the occasional outlier at 25. From finals to girl drama you never know how their personal life will affect them on the field. They are so used to being the man on a good HS team to being just another guy on their college team. There is a lot of pressure they can put on themselves and having them remember it's a team game can be difficult. So you end up seeing guys trying to do too much. I think this is more relevant for us since we've been so bad. It looks to me the good teams trust each other.

Cu was up 21 to 0 and i'm grinding my teeth over the last 3 possessions before half. We are probably more critical watching the buffs because they haven't given us a reason to give them a pass in any game due to 9 years of failure.

Not really. If I remember correctly, you used to be pretty tough on Barnett and we were winning, admittely weak, the Big 12 North if I remember correctly. It's the nature of fandom. I could be mistaking you though.

But your comments about getting nasty DL is something we've needed for a long time.

I used to get torked up over barnett and cu's first game losses. But i have been critical of so many coaches and all things concerning cu that you are probably right.
