Ralphie Report: Colorado advanced stats profile - How do the Buffaloes stack up?

moved because, well, I like this stuff. The key points I took from the breakdown by RR:

(1) Explosiveness is what is holding our offense back. We aren't making big plays in the passing or running game. This is worse than last year, and that's why our offense is worse this year, despite being more efficient. Also it cries out for getting guys like Shay and especially Donovan Lee more touches.

(2) Leavitt can freakin coach. His results as games have gone on are just incredible, even if you take out the change from last year. It's early yet, but the defense is playing well enough to get us into a bowl game.

(3) Linebackers are bad. Really bad.

Thanks for the TL;DR version. There have been opportunities for more explosive plays where Sefo just overthrew the receivers; it's seemingly happened at least once in every game this season. I imagine that connecting on a couple of those would affect the advanced stats pretty significantly here, right?

Sefo made an adjustment to his release point at half time against Nicholls and really started to look more accurate. The opportunities for explosive plays are there every game, we have good talent at the skill positions. Sefo just needs to hit it.

Lack of explosiveness continues to bother me. It looked like we were turning the corner last week against CSEwe, but apparently not. It seems we have players with speed and big play ability, particularly at WR. I wonder if it comes down to philosophy in general, or specifically for PAC12 play...trying to keep the high powered Os off the field. IDK, but as much as I liked Lindgren last year, this year he is kinda getting on my nerves. And going back to previous discussions about TOP, it doesn't appear on the top 5 list of stats predicting (or describing) wins. Interesting to me that field position is in the top 5 though.

What JL seems to be doing on the D is amazing. If the stats hold up in PAC12 play, I could see assistant coach of the year for him, at least in conference.

Cool stuff for us data nerds. Thanks for the post Darth.

It's not just Sefo though. Our running backs are not breaking long gains, or if they are, they are getting caught from behind instead of scoring. And it's not just Pow either. Lindsay gets jittery at the second level and rarely makes the last guy miss. That's one of the reasons I really want to see Donovan Lee getting more touches (preferably from Pow).

I think Lindsay likes contact a little too much sometimes.

Part of the problem is that Sefo isn't finding the crossing patterns and slants. That's where the YAC comes from. This isn't the Raiders of the 70s with big plays off 7 step drops to throw deep every other series.

Once Carr and Adkins come back the explosive play metric will tick up a bit. Also the addition of Lee helps that out.
