bsn BSN: WATCH: CU Buffs Mike MacIntyre has a physical altercation with an assistant

As I watched it happen during the game, I wondered if it would become a big deal. HCMM really, really went after him.

I've got mixed emotions.

On one hand, if Tumpkin was advocating for the safety of the player, well, he should. It was a cheap shot, and Moeller wasn't getting any support from the official, and he needed some advocacy (I get it, it's football, it's physical, but...).

On the other. Coaches can't get penalties.

It was the turning point of the game. I'm not sure if it was the turning point because of the penalty, or if it was the turning point because of what happened on the sideline, though.

The interesting thing about the Tumpkin penalty is that it was a really quick trigger from the referee, leading me to believe he said a buzzword that always draws a flag. He definitely had a right to be upset, I was shocked Oregon didn't get a flag there. In fact, when the flag came out on Tumpkin it was fast enough that I thought it still might be on the Oregon guy.

Which buzzword? I'm asking for a friend.

It would also help explain MM's response.

I don't know, there are a few things that a ref simply won't tolerate. For example, a ref will let you voice your displeasure with a call, "That's bull****!" but you usually won't get away with personal attacks, "You're a ****ing joke!"
Also, a head coach has a much longer leash with the refs.

The HC is the only one that is supposed to be talking to the officials. Tumpkin was out of line and cost the players 15 yards.

It was completely baffling to those of us watching on tv, when they stated there was a penalty but no context for it, and then you saw MM going after the safeties coach (that's what he is, right?) Since tv viewers didn't know what the coach did or what happened, it was a moment of wild speculation. Did he touch an official or just yell at him, or what?

The ESPN broadcast did a good job of capturing the altercation between coaches. Tumpkin was clearly not backing down from MacIntyre. The last thing we saw was MacIntyre physically pushing Tumpkin back with his forearm. I was reminded of the OSU game last season when MacIntyre did the same thing with the refs after the game, sans getting physical with them.

Lots to doubt about Mac, but I can't doubt his passion and competitiveness. Bad sitch all the way around.

Damn. Until watching the clip of what happened prior to the TV coverage, I thought the headline here was soft and sensational (sorry RK), now I have a hard time seeing how MM gets past it.

I'm confused. You thought the headline was too far or not far enough?

Before watching the video you provided, I figured it might be way off the mark. After, I was sad to see it wasn't so far off the mark - though the headline stoked images of fisticuffs, a wrestling tussle, or some such. The takeaway is, MM lost it and may not be able to recover from such a complete loss of composure.

C'mon. This isn't that big of a deal. Saying he might not recover from it is absurd. Stuff happens. MM needs to be the only guy chirping at the officials. I don't have an issue with a head coach with a temper. Parcells had this thing happen often. It's only an issue because we lost.

Nothing to see here, move along.

Mac and JL got something in common now, only an AC vs a Player?

And agree with Sacky. He was pushing him backwards, but it wasn't blows. He was pissed and I'm sure he feels like he went too far, but the man wants to win, despite those who call him dickless or whatever for punting. LOL

Blowing up at an assistant is something completely different than loosing your cool with a student athlete. I was glad to see MacIntyre's fire and his investment to the program.

After re-watching, Mac pushed him away as Tumpkin was still screaming at the Ref. I don't know what anyone would expect the HC to do in that situation. This is a complete non-issue.

MM works for the University of Colorado, the same one GB once did, and runs a much less impressive program. He probably isn't on the hot seat, but this can't help his cause with his RG ad the admins. My comment wasn't about how I would react, drama queens.
