BOULDER — Sophomore Gabby Simpson and freshmanNaghede Abu have earned Pac-12 Conference Player of the Week honors after guiding the University of Colorado volleyball team to a pair of victories last weekend.

“The recognition of these players is a testament to the great work of not just these players, but the team after a strong showing this weekend,” head coach Liz Kritzasaid. “The best thing about these players is that they will highlight the efforts of their teammates and will appreciate the honor, but will get right back to work to continually improve.”

Simpson, who was named the offensive player of the week for the second time this season, averaged 5.00 kills per set and hit .337 as the Buffs recorded wins against Cal and No. 6 Stanford. Simpson hammered a career-best 25 kills in CU’s first ever win against the Cardinal on Sunday and hit an impressive .405. She also picked up 10 digs for her seventh double-double of the season in the match. In the contest on Friday against Cal, Simpson had 15 kills.

Abu was tabbed the freshman player of the week, CU’s first ever since joining the conference in 2011. She led the Buffs with 1.50 blocks per set in the two matches. She posted a team-high seven blocks and had two kills in the four-set win against Stanford. Abu also tallied five kills, one dig and five blocks in the win against Cal.

“I am so very grateful to be receive this honor,” Abu said. “Special thanks to my coach and my team for all of their support. We are looking forward to working for our continued success.”

“Naghede is one of the brightest young players in this league and it is good to see her efforts being recognized as well,” Kritza said.

The Buffs have earned four player of the week honors this season. Junior Cierra Simpson was named the defensive player of the week on October 5.

Huge congrats to both (and of course, as Coach Kritza indicates in the quote above, congrats to the whole team, as they all need to do their jobs to make the winners' performances possible)!

It's been awesome to see how much Gabby Simpson has improved offensively from last year, and even from earlier this year. Also, if her serve keeps improving as it showed this past weekend, it could also become a difference-maker helping lead to some future Buff set victories. Looks more and more like "the sky's the limit" for her the remainder of her Buff career (and beyond).

As to Ms. Abu, to get this honor so early in her career, as still a very "raw" volleyball talent, indicates how productive she can be for the Buffs this year, and how great she could become in the coming years as she gets more experience and practice time in.

GO BUFFS!

Normally players don't earn the Freshman of the Week honor until they're upper classman.

I know, I know...you were talking about how little life volleyball experience she has.

Congrats to both players, but it does take a team to have a star.

Now if the team could just stop with the serving errors and have some serving aces.

Congrats Gabby and Naghede!

The Buffs were definitely improved in the serving stats for the Stanford match. They only had 5 serving errors in a four set match. 1.25 SE per set ain't bad, especially considering where they have been earlier in the season. Would I like to see it down even more? Of course. Or, alternatively, bring the service ace number up a bit. They had 2 of those against Stanford. I'd love to see the SA / SE in a 1 to 1 ratio.

There were some crucial service errors by Gabby and Anna in one of the sets ( I think Set 2). Set would have been over and it wasn't.
