Know this is a week late but here are some plays of NJ Falo in his first series against Arizona. Up to this point, the defense had struggled to stop Arizona, in part because our young LBs were outmatched. Falo comes in and instantly supplies the middle of the defense with some size and strength to stabilize the defense against the Zona rushing attack.

Play 1

Here Falo aligns at R-MLB and creeps toward the LOS anticipating run on 3rd and short. He knifes in and wraps up the ball carrier. He had struck the ball carrier a bit lower, it's probably a tackle for a loss. Regardless, still a nice, decisive diagnosis of the play. As he progresses, he'll make this TFL.

Play 2

This is the very next play from above. Here Falo again aligns at R-MLB. Falo demonstrates his strength fighting through the oncoming OL. He attacks the OL before he can cross the LOS and get his momentum going up field to drive Falo out of the play. This is crucial because it jams up the play and squeezes down the hole for the Arizona ball carrier. Contrast Falo's action to what we've seen with the other LBs waiting for the blocker and then getting driven out of the play. One reason Falo is able to do this because he has the requisite length and size to engage the OL on more equal terms. Just compared his size to Gamboa on this play. Easy to see the difference.

Play 3

Next play, Falo now aligns at the L-MLB position. He quickly diagnoses the play, gets into position, breaks down under control and then assists on the tackle. His measured approach to his gap assignment causes the RB to cut back inside as well where he can be corralled. This is text book linebacking.

He is going to be a stud after a year or two in the weight room when he can finally explode through runners. Definitely need more physical linebackers and he is well on his way.

Gonna be a big time play maker for us next year. Would love to see him next to a healthy Gillam. Might finally have the size/speed combo necessary at that position in the Pac-12.

Has anyone gotten the game notes from last week yet? I am going to see how many snaps our young LBs played.

Exactly. Falo seems to be the only LB that can get off of blocks consistently (or at least from what I've seen). He has the speed/size combo. I really hope we don't move him back to OLB.

After how they played in the AZ game I was very surprised to not see Falo and Watanabe out on the field against OSU.

Participation chart for OSU game shows that neither Falo nor Watanabe played, except perhaps on special teams. huh, wha, why?

Might have something to do with Arizona running for 300 yards on us . . .
that is why they shouldn't start.... but to not play them at all? Especially when you burned a RS last week. We won though, so it's ok.
