Recruiting and Philosophy

The thing for me after watching the CU 30-30, is just how awesome that staff was at recruiting. They were recruiting basically 4 and 5 star guys to a down program. However, they were very strategic. They picked an offensive strategy- the option- that could help them manage and win games. They went and got option guys to run that offense. Baylor did the same thing. Briles ran his spread option attack and brought in RG3 to run that offense. To me the difference, and not to be too negative on Sefo, is that he is not that difference maker that is in a specific type of offense. He is a good kid, but not a threat within an offense that can move the ball. I think a down team needs to find an identity and go with it- Washington State with the pass-Baylor with the option-We don't have the talent to be totally balanced. Once you get your footing, then you can recruit for balance. This staff made its bed with Sefo, his limits are this offense's limits. What happens next year without Spruce? We have not done much with him....

Exactly right. Look at Air Force, Navy, Georgia Tech and Washington State. These teams are perfect examples of committing to an identity on offense and running with it. This allows the offense to perform better than the "sum of its pieces". These teams are also very difficult to gameplan against, because the opponents are not used to seeing, for example, wishbone formations and option quarterbacks. Personally, I love Option football and would love to see the Buffs go back to it. I think the Pac 12 defenses would have a very hard time gameplanning and defending it.

Just want to point out that the Buffs are running an offense that gets a ton of 1st downs, burns a ton of clock, runs a ton of plays per game... all leading to increased scoring, a rested CU defense in the 4th quarter, and a tired opposing defense in the 4th quarter.

The lack of running (or throwing from a rollout) ability from the QB is probably what's limiting the team in the red zone and keeping it from making those extra couple 1st downs in crunch time. But I don't see the offense as the problem. Main problem is still the defense, which is not good despite so much of the offense being designed to protect and support the defense. It's getting better, though. We've been seeing stops on critical downs, seeing them string a couple quarters of excellent play together, and seeing much more opportunistic play with creating turnovers.

Things are coming along.

One thing I saw in the 30 for 30 was how Mac 1 pitched National Championships and "going into the backyard of OK and NU and beating them" at a time where CU was crap. I remember this about hawk and Embree as well, in that the were pitching National Championships at CU. I get the impression that Mike Mac's recruiting pitch has been steadily based on "We are a rebuilding team, be a part of it."
I think he's being honest and the idea of pitching championships at CU sounds absurd right now, but to have that in the minds of recruits, that you can do come to CU to compete for a national championship would help a lot in recruiting

Of course! Big goals offer the opportunity for big wins. Little goals off little results. I think that the 30-for-30 about Mac was released at a great time for CU football. Get young fans, all the 35 year olds and younger, to understand that winning is possible. Maybe recruiting WAC talent is the path, but I don't see it. College football is 80% the Jimmy's and the Joe's. Mac got it, the athletic department got it, I think the current athletic department gets it too. What is unclear is if the current coach doesn't get it or if he just doesn't believe in CU or himself enough to go after it.

I don't think any of you know jack **** about what MikeMac is selling on the recruiting trail. Do you really think that he doesn't tell recruits that the goal is a national championship? Give me a break.

Absolutely. 100%.

I believe that MacIntyre is an honest man. I believe that he wouldn't try to sell something that he doesn't believe.

BillMac wasn't talking national championships in his recruiting pitch in his 3rd Year here! Even Mac couldn't have sold that at this point in the process.

That was after he had them competitive! (He was 1-10 in his 3rd year and EVERY single one of you would be screaming for his head about now). If you know anyone who's been recruited by Mac, you would know that he has a VERY STRONG pitch that he uses, and it's all based on honesty.

I have a friend who visited CU in 1983 and ultimately chose a California based PAC12 school. He started as a freshman there, and later played in the NFL but only for a short time. Let's just say the recruiting pitch he got here would not fly today by any stretch. That **** hasn't flown here since the non-scandal. Only Nebraska out-did that pitch. The point being is that things have changed across the entire CFB landscape and especially in Boulder.

I absolutely do NOT think he talks about a national championship to the recruits. I think he tells then a very similar pitch as he does us fans. I can recall many recruits talking about being apart of bilding something special, but never once championships. He seems like a very honest straight forward person about realistic goals.
What in the world makes you think he would be telling them otherwise? And why are you so mad ?
I like mac 2. I want him to succeed. It was just an observation.

The class coming off the 1-10 season was built off a pitch of a foundation to lead CU to greatness. It was rooted in a season that happened to have unusually very strong Colorado talent and Mac got most of it, along with some key out of staters.

Mac seems like an honest guy, but he's also the guy that guaranteed a victory over Arizona only to lose so he's not exactly immune to occasional bluster.

Actually Bill Mac WAS. See minute 17.00 on the youtube full version. The players specifically say "He was talking about winning national championships" after the 2-8-1 season as stated in minute 16.

Different styles. McIntyre needs to be true to himself in order to be authentic. And CU fans need to stop thinking that the only approach to having elite success is the McCartney model.

That's not when he convinced all those studs from the national championship years to come play for him. If he was talking it then, people thought he was off his rocker (which he was of course). The studs started to listen after he went 7-5 and to their first bowl game, in year 4, after going 1-10.

Remember that Mac's first class (1983) got all the in-state blue chippers - Eric McCarty, Curt Koch, Ed Reinhardt, Jon Embree. That set the base for the '86 Nebraska win and it was upward from there.... just saying he recruited well to start out. He was by far the best recruiter in the country during his time at CU.

He is certainly selling the point that CU will become an elite team and a powerhouse in the Pac. Of course he is and should.

The biggest issue for us is the staff are basically bad recruiters. They came from a lower level without contacts at the best schools. All they've ever known is CU being bad. Leavitt comes in and right away goes right after the best talent in the country. And some listen to him. All he knew when he was in college was CU kicked butt. He seems to sell this vision of why the hell wouldn't you want to come here. I think his confidence in CU. has helped the staff tremendously this year. If we can bring a couple new assistants with that same mind set, there is no reason we can't improve recruiting drastically. We've got the school, the academics, the location and now the facilities. Why the hell wouldn't you want to come here. You need that attitude to sell recruits. We don't have that right now.
