Rick George?

The University of Colorado's Board of Regents on Wednesday approved the school's highest-ever administrative salary -- $700,000 a year -- to new Athletic Director Rick George in a contract that's also loaded with millions in potential bonuses.

On top of the base salary, George is eligible for roughly $8.5 million in bonuses -- though, for that to happen, the football team would have to pull off the Herculean feat of going from a 1-11 season to winning back-to-back National Championships for the next five years. And all other sports teams would need to have championship-winning seasons, too.

The five-year contract promises bonuses if George hits performance goals that include fundraising, growing licensing revenue and having a strong showing of fans in the stands at football and basketball games. It also includes the more typical bonuses that come with athletes performing well in both the classroom and on game days.

That Gazette article is from last week & looks like a piggy-back to the CU article written right before the USC game. I think Rick wants $$$ and I think CU is likely to throw a little his way.

Vandy seriously has the highest paid AD in CFB...why? At least maybe our admin has learned that you get what you pay for now. We spent some real money and have gotten real results.

I just don't like the fact that he still has family there, it is his alma mater and he hasn't said "I'm not interested."

Given the way things have worked out for us over the last decade, I'm preparing myself for the worst and hope to be pleasantly surprised.

It seems pretty clear from the smoke that Illinois is going to make George tell them no, everything out of their media seems to be reiterating he is their top candidate.

I'll be surprised if he doesn't get a raise. I'll be shocked if he leaves.

The barzil thread wasn't enough?

I just hope we already have our top 3 targets for replacement and we are ready to move on them quickly. If all he wants is more money, then send it his way.

Of course he wouldn't say "not interested." He's not stupid. He's a professional negotiator. Like I posted before, word is his wife loves it here. So, there is that.

incentive based compensation? that's a freaking miracle. love that

actually i think all coaches should get paid on results--you eat what you kill

Low six figure base salary and incentives for each win. Exponential incentives for top five rankings, major bowl wins and of course national championships

Thoughts like this is why coaches have agents haha.

had a buddy whose folks were friends with the Alford's argue the same thing for why Steve would never leave U. of New Mexico.

As a newbie, does administration, alumni and fans think he is doing a good job as AD?

It would seem that if people would like an improvement in football coach they should want a new AD. But other sports seem to be in pretty good shape. Thoughts?

UCLA is a blue blood bball program with the best history in college basketball. Moving from new Mexico to Westwood is not a very good comparison to moving from Boulder to champaign. I get your point though.

This AD didn't hire the current football coach. In fact, he hasn't hired any CU coaches. We like him for the fact that he has run the CU AD like a business, got a major facilities upgrade for football, and dramatically increased the endowment.

CU desperately needed that and needs more of it.

Hiring coaches is down my list of job needs at CU. If the AD can make it so that facilities are top-notch, coach & assistant salaries are great, recruiting budgets are where they need to be, athlete support is top notch, boosters & fans are supporting/generous, and the administration is friendly to athletics... then there are a lot of coaches who will enjoy tremendous success at CU.

Thanks for this information, don't know much about him or how he has done.

What comes first, the good coach or the boosters & fans are supporting/generous?

I guess my total of 2 years living in Colorado and my 2 days on this forum means I'm playing dumb. Ok then.

Well, you have made no secret you would like to see MacIntyre replaced. You might want to know something about his boss to have a strong opinion one way or the other.

Good question. I think you can get part of the way down that path with good administration, but you can't get to the finish line unless winning rallies the base and the bandwagon.

One issue I believe we've had at CU, though, is that there has been too much of an attitude that Boulder sells itself, CU doesn't need to do all the things other places do, and that it just comes down to hiring the right coach. The persistence of that attitude is the one lingering annoyance I have of the McCartney legacy -- we got a once-in-a-century type coach it set unrealistic expectation within the CU community of what a coach can do, causing us to ignore the fundamentals of what it takes to have a top athletic department.

Keep in mind Vandy is a power in NCAA Baseball, usually has good BB teams as well. An AD is not just for CFB. In addition to whatever Nik said.

No one would take jobs at many schools trying to rebuild. The rich would just get even richer.

You must have been Ricky Williams agent when he signed with NO and lost millions. Master P posts here?

And as asinine as it sounds, and McCartney has even stated as much - we did luck out with where we were in history (1980s), the gang wars of L.A., and our school colors. Not joking.
