S & C

You must be referring to this comment, "'I'd say we're probably one of the smaller, weaker teams,' Solis said in comparing the CU linemen to other teams," while ignoring what he said to explain it: "Solis said he believes that will change, however, as the young linemen mature. 'Director of sports performance Dave) Forman does a great job with us and we've definitely gotten stronger over the years,' Solis said. '(The linemen) are young, still out of high school still. There's definitely an age factor. That's why we have the offseason, for these guys to get bigger and stronger.'"

Edit : Dammit Orr.

Solis' comments say it all. S&C guy has missed the mark since he came to boulder

experienced, mature OL do make a huge difference. the youth and injuries story is getting tired, but it is true that if you have a strong pipeline of OL so that you can run a group of seniors out there, you are usually going to be better off.

not sure what the OP thought he was reading, however.

The youth excuse is bull**** when talking about general OL play and when talking about the talent level, but is it bull**** when talking about the physical maturity of our OL?

A little bit. As I said, you cannot projects at OT in three straight classes without adding any JUCO/transfer help and expect depth to be adequate. Unfortunately, it seems like the coaches will be rolling with that strategy in 2016. We better hope Irwin is ready to go, day damn one.

Agreed. It looks like, any way you slice it, the OL will remain the biggest ? going into 2016 season. ILB and DL will be up there as well, but assuming Tupou comes back and JL remains DC, I have a lot more faith in those two position groups than I do our OL.

It seems to me that if you are young and your OL is inconsistent but guys show flashes of clear ability, then you have some hope for the future.

It also seems to me that if you are young and your OL is routinely getting their asses kicked because your players are simply not very good, along with being too small and inexperienced, then perhaps you have a little bit less hope for the future.

Youth excuse on the OL is bull****.

Total bull****. Nembot's a 5th year senior. Kelley's a 5th year junior (grayshirted). Kough and Lindsay are 4th year sophomores (grayshirted). Irwin, Wiefels and Callahan are 4th year juniors. Huckins and Kronshage are 3rd year sophomores.

That is not a youth problem on the OL. It's pathetic to be trotting out that excuse.

Yep.

Duff Man and Buffnik are spot on- the youth factor is plain BS. The current S and C guy has been around long enough - either his program works or it doesn't. The OL guys
are not being developed. Bernardi has a big hand in this also. Also, if a team is going to spend a scholarship on a JC kid, he should have immediate impact. Richter and Wiefels are two examples of relatively non productive JC additions. The last time I saw a CU O line put in a strong and consistent effort was the last game of the 2011 season at Utah when the Buffs knocked the Utes out of the Pac 12 championship game. That CU OL was strong and athletic. In that contest, they handled two future NFL guys in Star and Krueger. CU had a vet QB in Hansen and a RB [speedy] who hit the holes very quickly. It all starts up front. For the last several years, both the OL and DL guys have gone into most games knowing that from a size and strength standpoint, CU is overmatched. In my humble opinion, CU has to make adjustments in the following areas:
--develop OL and DL guys into strong-quick-mean dudes - squarley on the shoulders of the S and C guy
--recruit and develop several real thumpers at linebacker...think about this...two years ago, UCLA's starting linebackers were:barr and kendricks [both of whom start for the vikes] zaumwalt who is on the DL with the steelers and myles jack. Gillam had a great frosh year..but has had at least 5 concussions [he almost quit playing last winter] and knee and shoulder problems. the last big backers that CU brought in were majors and rippey
--get with the times and use the TE as a weapon
--Lindsey at running back has the proper attitude...hit the hole quickly and deliver the blow.

Again, i look at Solis' comment about the CU OL being the smallest and weakest that he has faced..it has been that way for 3-4 years..when will that change ?

Now that we've identified that the linked article is more about the lack of talent across the OL than it is about failures within the S&C program, can we change the thread title? From my interaction with Forman at coaching clinics, the guy knows exactly what he's doing but it's been a major process. The things he said about the level of S&C of the players when he arrived in Boulder were shocking. This past offseason was the first time the whole team has been at a point, physically, where he has been able to implement his entire program.

Agree, mods, please change title to "we're ****ed." TIA.

I've had some in depth conversations on this one of our our competitors line coaches. They target 300 # and a certain % body fat before a player hits the field. They make exceptions rarely when a guy really impresses.

I've thought the current S&C has been one of our strengths. I have no analytics on this, but it had seemed that gamed missed due to injury are way down.

I don't know how good Foreman is, but he can only do so much with the talent that walks through his door.

So you're telling me recruiting does matter?! Shame RG is getting no ROI on the 200 million facility.

Pass blocking seems to require more technique than run blocking which is more strength based. We can run well. Bernardi is the weak link there.

We do look gassed at the end of the game, but that's probably because the 2-3 deep isn't good enough to get our starters some much needed rest throughout the game. By the end of a guy hasn't gone down to injury he's played 90% of plays. That's awful.

And do you know what helps pass blocking a lot? Mauling those defenders on run plays over and over again. I'm maybe too old school for today's game, but I prefer seeing 60% run and most of the passing game being off play action when it's not a quick hitter or screen.

This narrative is absolute ****. The CC has been complete for only a few months and the IPF isn't even done, yet we're supposed to some how have already seen some miraculous recruiting bump?

Btw.... Craig Watts, Anthony Julmisse, Johnny Huntley and Ronnie Blackmon
