Honest Q for fusker fans

Is Cally on the hot seat this year?

Sure he is bringing in good recruiting classes, but so does Ed Orgeron at Ole Miss.

Yes, there have been some "flashes" like the Michigan game, CU win in Boulder, and the close loss to Texas, and a return trip to the Big 12 title game.

However, you have to admit, Cally has shown nothing more than a mediocre program that has often questionable playcalling and a horrible road record. Plus, the multiple embarrasing foolish moments he is famous for. And in year 4 the fuskers are not the clear favorites to win the division in a weak Big 12 north. Still no confrence title since 1999. Allof that a far cry from the fusker nation expectations that I am used to.

It seems that a lot of fusker fans are so excited about the program, yet after 3 years it is not any better than when Solich left.

Solich last 3 years: 27-12

Throatslash first 3 years: 22-15 (1 losing season)

Again, this is not a slam, more of a question about the opionions of Throatslash if he doesn't show anything better this year.

I would say yes. The weakness of the team has been adjustments at halftime and coming out flat in the second half of game. This obviously falls on the coaching staffs shoulders, they must improve on this.

I think a return to the Big 12 champ game is a must this year, including a better performance there. Anything less than that and I think it will get REAL interesting in Lincoln. He has recruited some awesome athletes though, that might buy him some more time.

thanks lammie.

BRCop, Waylon, Dusty, Blackshirts, and other fuskers what are your takes?

And feel free to bring this up about Hawk in two years if CU doesn't appear to be going anywhere.

1st post, long time viewer. Love the latitude given on this board. Callahan is under NO PRESSURE. Any comparison to Solich is ridiculous. As much as other teams may wish Solich was still here, it ain't happening. CAlly & crew are here for the long term and most couldn't be happier. Anyone that says a balanced offense can't work in the midwest really needs to look back to the 70'S(still under Ozzie). The ONLY reason for the switch to the option was to better compete with OU.

No offense, but when the North Teams handle NU like they did the last 4 years, it is apparent the talent is low. I'm really not sure why, but Callahan has caused Big Twelve teams some personal grief for no real reason. I can see OU being a little pissed but he generally keeps his mouth shut and doesn't dis anyone. Any insight as to why this is?

By the way. The AD just got a 5yr extension so Cally DEFINITELY isn't going anywhere?

Also, When you guys handled us a couple years in a row, I'm pretty sure we weren't saying...hey, Barney has to go...his talent and coaching suck. I think we were saying...hey, Solich is TRENDING downward, we need a change to catch up...and we did.

By the way Unleash...it really looks like you are..."unleashing hell" on the gobbler...so to speak.

Again, great board...far better than Netbuffs. hammer away!(not on the turkey)

Welcome, thanks for the gobbler comment!

No offense boss, I like to rib. Again, great board.

Welcome,

my in laws live in nebraska, I spend a good deal of time there, they think cally is an idiot and unless he goes at least 9-3 he will be on the hotseat, most people I have talked sports with when I am there agree 7-5 or 8-4 with only winning the games they should, will have cally on the hotseat.

Personally I would think the Nebraska AD can't be too eager to conduct another coach search after the debacle the last one turned into. Fuskers made their bed by firing a coach who went 9-3, they're gonna have to lie in it a few more years. I think it would take a real bad year to get Throatshlash canned.

Not gonna happen. In today's day and age, with all the limits on scholly's, Title 9 requirements, etc...you can't reasonably expect someone to go 9-3 every year, no questions asked. Just not possible. No program has done it and I doubt any will. The best you can hope for is a great product, integrity in the program and competetive teams that win a Title once a decade. To expect more is to belittle all the other great programs and their efforts.

Hey, I'm as big a Husker A-Hole as their is but I also understand we absolutely cannot beat every team in the North 20 years in a row. That's why the KU deal didn't get me too bent out of shape. Now, if I think we are athletically superior in a certain year, I expect it but we are far from that right now. We are getting there.

Sounds about right. The team has been getting better each year, so I suppose that needs to continue for Cally to be comfortable in his job.

I may be a scumbage, but at least I admit it. I figure if I take away the ammo early on, maybe I can render you defenseless.

I support Cally but I've always had major doubts about him. I guess I'm still on the fence ya know? Win or lose I still love my team and I'm no expert on coaching but if I could turn back time...I think I would have kept Solich.

I was starting to feel like a ham sandwich in the middle of a bunch of hobos there for a bit.

And...anyone that says they would have kept Solich is F'n nuts.

Does anyone here honestly think that a few years ago Colorado CAUGHT UP to NU or do you think NU slid back? That will answer the Solich arguement.

could anyone here imagine a fusker fan saying this prior to the BC era? 7-7 under Solich was the end of the world to them now "you can't win 9 every year" maybe this attitude is why he isnt on the hotseat.

Then again SC can win 9 every year and CPC is 10-1 against top 10 teams, hows cally against regular old ranked teams?

I know a lot of fusker fans who think their program is equal to SC's if it is cally has to be on the hotseat.

Hell, "fans" can say what they want...every guy thinks he has a 10" wanker, also. Fact is, when Ozzie retired, he even said that expectation is ridiculous due to the factors I mentioned. Whether or not "fans" choose to listen is a whole 'nother story. It's not like NU football had 9 wins a year for eternity. We had a nice run that finally came to an end. Keep in mind everyone likes to only remember our last years under Ozzie. We did 9-3 a number of years but got our noses rubbed in it in a bowl game. Just a matter of proper perspective.

We were actually pretty lucky to have our best teams of all time around the same time CU had theirs or we could be having an entirely different conversation.

Comparing NU to USC or even Texas isn't reasonable. In their down years, all of the talent in those states were headed to FSU, Miami, Washington, etc. Now that they are "back" they can fill classes with top talent and not really recruit.

NU(and any school not in those states) will never be that way. Just not enough homegrown talent.

Turn arounds at those schools is far easier considering they are basically the elite U's in those states. Not like they are schools nobldy ever wanted to attend.

Dude, I've followed them for far longer than most. I won't blow smoke and will call a spade a spade(even though you may see it as a heart). Just because I'm reasonable doesn't mean I don't want to be insulted. Why do you think I registered here????

Who appointed SC as king? We'll see how many years they win 9. I'm sure everyone was preaching the same about Miami and FSU a few short years ago.

SC is just the latest to have a nice little run. For as good as they were, they only got one glass ball to show for it.

You guys may be down, but can you imagine if NU wasn't what it was in the 90's?? How many Titles(nat & Conf) would CU have had???

Now THERE is a reason to dislike us.

Steve Pederson just got an extension until the year 2013. For those of you who don't know, Stevie-P is the AD. He hired Callahan. From an objective point of view, I think that Callahan will not be on the hot seat because Callahan is Stevie's boy. Unless Billy C really screws something up, I think he's in.

From my point of view, I think Billy C is doing a tremendous job. he is bringing in absolutely top notch talent. I couldn't be happier with the level of talent he is bringing into NU. He is an absolute accountant and is pretty much a genius when it comes to X's and O's. The only real drawbacks I see with him are that he sometimes lets his temper get the best of him, (F-in hillbillies, and pri madonnas can go to K-State) and that it seems like he may not be too terribly good at making in game adjustments.

All in all, I think the jury is still out on how good he really is. I certainly have his back all the way. I named my puppy Billy C.

Why is Callihan considered such and x's and o's genius? This is a serious question. I see that written all of the time about him, but no one ever says why?
The raiders offense was not that good under him, and Nubs has not yet been that good. What is the deal with the genius part?

EDIT: nevermind, just looked it up, Gannon passed for an ass load of yard in callihans first year. Makes more sense now. I just don't remember that.

He was a pretty good coordinator for the Raiders. Him and Gruden were a pretty damn good combo there.

I'd like to add my 2 cents......

Do I think CU caught NU??? HMMM, when CU was GREAT.... 89-94, CU could recruit and Mac would take care of the problems in house....

unfortunately, Boulder City got more morallistic with MORE POWER and the football team suffered...... talent was pretty great on both sides.....

NU slid for some reason in 1999, 2000, and 2001 and CU EXPOSED them in 2001.

The problem is that u play NO ONE in out of conference games.... so its hard to judge since your last Championship in 1997.

He used to coach the Raiders. The B12 North is home to the Broncos and the Chefs. Enough said.

Raider coach turned Holer coach = a guy who isn't real well liked in CO.

Philly,

If you don't know why we slid those years, I can spell it...S-O-L-I-C-H. He was a great Assistant but that doesn't necessarily translate to master Head Coach(see Norm Chow). Besides..people were catching up to the option. No biggie, all we had to do is adapt.

Now for out of conference....always been 1 premier, 1 mid tier and a couple of puffs. Always has been, always will be. About the time you start netting 1+ million per home game, you will understand this. As you are finding out internally, facilities do not pay for themselves and they usually don't get fully paid for by private donations either.

Do you honestly think a program is "afraid" to play someone??? If that was the case, NU would decline any bowl bids.

I think the better question is whether you guys are OK with the wrist-slap that Purify got?

He deserved to sit several games, if not be booted from the team. Instead, he misses a meaningless game...
