ABOUT WASHINGTON: The Washington Huskies are 10-2 on the season and 1-0 in Pac-12 play after opening their conference schedule with a 79-64 win over Washington State on Dec. 29. The Huskies have won four consecutive games and six of their last seven contests.

They are led by one of the best guards in the country, junior Kelsey Plum, named to the Wooden Award Preseason Top 30 and Naismith Watch List. She is the nation’s leading scorer, averaging 27.6 points per game and averages 4.0 assists in each contest.

Forward Talia Walton is second on the team in scoring, tallying an impressive 18.3 points a game and has recorded a team-leading 22 steals. The Huskies’ top rebounder is junior forward Chantel Osahor, who is averaging 10.7 rebounds, which ranks third in the Pac-12 and 9.4 points per game.

The Huskies have posted a 3-0 record on the road during their 2015-16 campaign and are guided by third year head coach Mike Neighbors.

THE SERIES: Colorado is 8-7 all-time against Washington and holds a 2-5 record vs. the Huskies since becoming a member of the Pac-12 Conference. This will mark the seventh time Washington has traveled to Boulder and the series is tied 3-3 when played on Colorado’s home floor.

I'm happy to see Brenda VanLengen is on the call. She is a great analyst and has missed coming to Boulder. Kept telling her to keep pursing the Pac 12 about doing CU games since she really doesn't want to travel to the west coast. She's picked up a lot of other conference work besides the Big 12, which was what she mostly did before all the changes.

Heartbreaking loss by 2 after a great comeback in 3rd quarter. Buffs missed two shots in final seconds.

Gotta say that, in spite of the fact they came up just short at the end, the second half of the game today was , by far, the best basketball I have seen from this team so far this season. If that 3 point attempt by Alexis Robinson in the final seconds had gone in the place would have gone crazy.

Great adjustments at the half by the coaching staff and great hustle and execution by the team in the second half. CU figured out how to defend the perimeter and executed so well on offense in the third quarter. 35 points in the quarter was more than the entire first half. Leonard scored something like 16 herself.

Alexis Robinson was also a big contributor on the second half.

Swan, Leonard and Robinson played excellent basketball today and Huggins hit some key 3 pointers. Just wish they could have finished and got the W.

How will the close loss affect the team? We will find out on Monday. Could not believe they scored 35 points in a quarter.

Coach Barry always said defense wins. Giving up 76 points is too many and CU came up just short.

I had fun listening to Brenda VanLengen on the call. So happy she will be coming to Boulder two more times this season. She used to do television games for the Big 8 and Big 12 and I kept telling her the Pac 12 needed some knowledgeable commentators. They got one in her for these three games.

If they could have gotten this win, it would have been such a confidence booster.

One of the interesting statistics for this game is minutes played. Ten Buffs saw action, but only 5 of them played over 10 minutes. It seemed that in the second half Lappe stuck with the 5 best players (Leonard, Robinson, Huggins, Smith & Swan) more or less for the entire time. Don't know if they can do this night in and night out, but today it gave them a shot winning.

Felt for Alexis as she was such a difference maker on the second half on both ends of the court only to miss the trey at the end of the game. In addition to her 13 points she had 6 rebounds and 5 assists, with no turnovers.

Another interesting stat for the game, UDub was 7-21 from behind the arc in the first half, but 0-6 in the second.

I tuned in for the last few minutes. Buffs had a lead. Then, on two straight defensive possessions they had complete breakdowns in the half court leaving a Washington player completely unguarded under the basket. UW threw it in for uncontested layups. On the other end, CU became a turnover show. Robinson almost bailed them out with a huge trey that tied it with just under a minute, but UW scored 2 and CU came up empty the rest of the way.

As I've felt since the preseason, this team has some very nice pieces that could gel. But I'm seeing the same problems with inconsistent offense, inconsistent defense and crunch time breakdowns that we watched all last season.

Could make the same conclusion about our football team...

Only 5 players played in the second half. Those kids can't play that many minutes game in and game out and play error free. They had to be tired by end of the fourth quarter, especially after the huge 3rd quarter.

I do not think that can happen every game.

It can't happen every game. But what do you do? Swan-Smith-Huggins-Leonard-Robinson is a very solid 5. After that, not so much. I see getting Ellis minutes to develop her. Maybe Brecca has to give a few minutes just to rest the guards. Maybe pick one from Correal/B-F/Watts to spell Swan for a bit -- I'd go with Correal since she's younger and hope she develops a bit. So I guess I'd play an 8-player rotation and probably not have any of those bench players in for more than 10 minutes for the game.

UW only went 7 deep (we played 10) and UWs top 4 players actually played more total minutes then Smith, Swan, Huggins and Leonard combined. I would be a lot more worried about UW playing those kind of minutes and their lack of depth....
We finally saw a group of 5 that significantly outplayed a top tier opponent for 20 minutes, GOBUFFS!!

The first half was challenging to watch. At half time I was thinking they need to spend the next week working on finishing lay ups since we missed at least 7 and consistently left two shooters open who were making a lot of 3s. Second half was a completely different story. The freshman Leonard and Robinson were very impressive to watch. Robinson hounded the other team's top player and clearly was better than Plum who is a two time All Pac 12 selection. I really wish that figured a way to win the game. We definitely need more bench support.

The 5 players that played the entire second half are definitely our best five. Here's hoping Monica Burich returns from her injury and is as good as the Leonard and Robinson.

Somebody has to be ready to spell players if they get in foul trouble. IMO, Correal has not played as well this season as she did last season.

Tonight we shall see if they just got fired up for Washington or if that was what the team is about.

Looking back now, as the conference losses pile up (I'm writing after the loss at ASU), I can't help but wonder whether things might have been different had that last second 3 point shot by Robinson in this Washington game gone in instead of bouncing off the back of the rim.
