BSN: Don’t write off CU Buffs Kenan Guzonjic

News Junkie
The world of college basketball is one that is, many times, full of instant gratification, it’s a world where an 18-year old freshman can come in, dominate, win player of the year and get drafted first overall. Because of this, development can be overlooked, “What can you do for me in the future?” Is dominated by, “What have you done for me lately?” And, “What can you do for me tomorrow?”

Fans are, sometimes, willing to write off a player before they even get a chance, before they even know their story.

Enter Kenan Guzonjic (Ken-en Gooz-ah-nich), a 6-8, 245-pound sophomore from Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina by way of Midland Junior College. Or maybe he’s from Midland Junior College by way of Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina because he… You know what, let’s just cut to the story.

Great read on Guz. I still really like his potential and was bummed to see him not get Tory's minutes against Furd. Hopefully he can get in shape - nice weapon to have in case of emergency.

Hopefully he can get better and contribute but we are really seeing the recruiting misses from the last three years now.

2013
Dustin Thomas - Coaching disagreement and transferred
George King - 1 year sixth man, inconsistent, two year starter
Treshawn Fletcher - reserve, passively may not reach potential, one year starter
Jaron Hopkins - never reached potential and transferred

2014
Dom Collier - three year starter, two years of strength and acclimatization, overhyped.
Tory Miller - nice body, role player. Maybe junior and senior starter.
Josh Fortune - TNFR - same contribution as King and fletcher.

2015
Thomas Akyazili - decent role player, limited physical skill set.
Kenan Guzonjic - JUCO scramble to find a warm body to replace holes from 2013

Now this isn't as embarrassing as macintyre trying to recruit, and tad gets a lot of leeway for the three tourney appearances, but the window is closing after josh Scott leaves. There's nothing behind him. Hopefully dance this year and then the recruiting misses come home to roost. Cal, Oregon, Washington et al are out recruiting us. We may sit in the bottom third of the pac permanently.

Wow. We must have a really ****ty team.

Yes very sad news. And I had thought with several NCAA bids, several recruits who turned into NBA players and a strong winning record the program was on the way up.

I do agree that CU recruiting should have capitalized and done better the past few years. CU has been out-recruited for several blue-chip talents. And we need a blue-chip or two if we want to consistently be a sweet 16 team in the future. Tads coaching ability has done him well, but if we want to be top 4 in the Pac-12 year in and year out, we're gonna need some studs.

Dustin and Jaron needed to go and yes, were recruiting misses. Both of them (wing players) couldn't shoot and were turnover prone, which was a huge detriment to the team IMO.

However, the assessment on some of these guys is silly. Here's mine.

1) Josh Fortune is as advertised. Streaky shooter that can get hot. Better slasher than expected. Not a recruiting miss!
2) Treshawn Fletcher is someone I expected to be better. He needs to play smart and with confidence to be effective. I don't think he's a recruiting miss, and I expect him to be very good his Senior year.
3) George King is exactly what we needed. A slasher, a shooter, and a threat. It'll be his team once Josh is gone. A+ to Tad on this find.
4) Tory will be a beast as a Junior and Senior. Decent Midrange and Dunks in Traffic, defense needs work.
5) Dom Collier needs to keep improving. I agree that he was overhyped. His 3 point shot is coming around. I wish he we're better right now, but it looks like he'll be one of those four year Letterman that will have a great Senior year.
6) Thomas Akyazili... Limited skillset? I'll give you limited athletic ability. Good IQ, decent shot, not afraid, Tomlinson like... I like his game. Great find by Tad.
7) Kenan Guzonjic is not ready. We'll see what he can do next year.
8) Derrick White should be a good one year impact player. Glad Tad got him aboard.

In Tad we trust, he'll replenish the stock while keeping CU competitive.

You complain a lot for a guy who's team avareges 20 wins a year and has made the NCAA tourney 3 of the last 5 years. Did you work for BZ and are now pissed all the fans love Tad but don't acknowledge BZ helped get this place going in the right direction? Did you watch tad yell at too many players in practice and suspend people for being 30 seconds late - so you dislike him for being mean? Did he not cow-tow enough to your favorite CU star?

We are 12-3 even is we hit your 9-9 prediction we win 20 games for the 5th time in 6 years and we position ourselves to win a couple games in the pac-12 tourney and for an NCAA bid. Sure Tad is human, maybe it pisses you off that you feel some of us aren't critical enough of the moves he makes and his shortcomings. We all know the offense needs work, but doing things like calling Tad a "loser like macintyre" I mean really? Tad is human, not everything is going to be perfect, but save last year he's won 20 games every year put us in the dance 60% of the time and at 12-3 with an RPI of 20 right now he has a decent shot to have us dancing again.

Maybe you want to talk about recruiting misses? lets talk guys we were close on but missed - as opposed to players you've decided how they are going to pan out. Our recent misses: Dorsey, Heild, Hamilton, Wallace - all of those guys were heavily interested in CU and we lost out. Things happen but do you know what this team looks like with even some those guys on it?

Or perhaps current personnel:
- Fletch, you've always been down on him, but this is a kid who came in early and as he was adjusting to the college game and showing some promise he got injured, it took him nearly a year to recover from that injury. This year he has improved significantly and provides us with a positive contribution to team. He's not the player some of us hoped for when he came out of high-school as a top 150 recruit. He's also not the waste of a scholarship you've called him.
- King - really? hes 15 games into his Soph season, second on the team in scoring and offensive win-shares, terrible pick up. Sure his freshman (7 seconds or less) campaign was bad but he's miles ahead of what any of us expected this year. To put it in perspective as a Soph at this point in the season only: Spencer, Burks, & Higgins have averaged more than the 13 a game King is averaging and all were playing more minutes.
- Fortune is as others said what we though he would be, he's second on the team in minutes, third in scoring, third in defense (which could be better) but this was a good pick up that gives us some toughness and makes for a nice 3 man wing rotation. Despite how close they look statistically in Gooses' comparison complaining about this along with King/Fletcher is obnoxious all three are very much pac-12 caliber players.
- Collier - was probably over hyped coming in, didnt help he got to college lacking size and discipline, got himself in trouble, then injured last year, his frosh campaign was basically a waste. He's come into his own this year, looks perfectly at home again the best teams we've played, has improved his 3pt and ft shooting drastically. He will be a positive contributor this year and a significant player for us next year and beyond.
- Miller - those feet need work, needs to probably drop 10lbs and needs to figure out how not to be clueless on D - at his age that is a question.
- Kenan looks like a bust but showing up fat and smoking 2 packs a day will do that, not real confident of a turn here.
- AK - has played 15 games, he's young but so far he's been what you want a steady hand of the bench.

None of these have anything to do with this year or hurt us now, but they make for nice complaining:
- DT fit the stretch 3/4 Tad wants, was a baller in high-school, had an impossibly tough time adjusting to boulder, clashed with not just coaches but the whole town and his teammates and left, scholly not on books (being arguably used by Fortune).
- JT never could learn to shoot well enough to play at the p5 level, but he was highly recruited, or should we not offer and compete for people UofA offers?
- we missed on Ben mills he's also gone.

Or how about the future?
We are replacing XT&Eli with Peters and Brown, I'll take that.
Losing Josh will hurt, alot, we all admit that, we even have a whole thread devoted to opportunities to sign a big.

So...can I ask what you major malfunction is?

Another Tad "miss" that hasn't been brought up: Chris Jenkins

Based on stars and the fact that he was over-tall for his HS and had to transition into learning to play as a guard/wing, looked like a bit of a reach when he signed here. Then, while redshirting to adjust to this level and put on bulk, missed being home in Michigan. So he left and we didn't get a chance to develop him at CU.

At 8-5 Detroit as a junior this year: 13.2 ppg (3rd on team), 6.8 rpg (1st on team), shooting 48.6% from field (43.2% from 3pt) and 85.7% on FTs.

Tad isn't a star chaser in recruiting and signs some guys who look like reaches when comparing Pac-12 classes. But he's a damn good talent evaluator and while he has some misses, the guys he finds very often end up being very good college basketball players. This issue, as I stated before, is that we need to start mixing in some NBA 1st round talent with that foundation if we want this program to get where it can: regularly getting a bye in the Pac-12 tourney and seeing the second weekend of the NCAAs.

Solid point on Jenkins

I hate making the comparison because it seems lazy, but I really think that Deleon Brown is going to be what we expected Jenkins to be here.

This thread: "the amount of energy necessary to refute bull**** is an order of magnitude bigger than it is to produce it."

- rosstr needs a new hobby.
- very few schools are "consistent sweet 16 teams" & those schools bleed blue chips..not just 1 or 2.
- Tad is a star chaser. He's gone after plenty of top 35 recruits, just hasn't won.

On topic, never was a fan of the Guz signing b/c his stats in his 1 healthy JC season were underwhelming to go along with underwhelming athleticism. I can see the tools Tad thinks he can develop but not counting on it.

Man you guys put a lot of words in my mouth. The recruiting list was meant to be somewhat comprehensive, from good, reaches and to outright misses. But I love tad. He's the best thing to happen to the CU AD in the dark times since McCartney has left. I moved out of state and still kept and upgraded my season tickets to tad ball. Won't make a single game this year though, aside from Vegas ;)

And sure, I dislike macintyre for abysmal performance and recruiting reasons, but I never stated that tad was a "loser like Macintyre." In fact I think the ROI for facilities is far greater in tads program than the zero returns in macintyre. I secretly would have liked to take 20mil from the football project and renovated the cec.

And I don't think it's a stretch to see a general downward tre d coming up for CU. Scott is so good that I fear he is masking some major holes that will become evident in the next two years. But by all means, lets scratch out a dance ticket and enjoy it.

Let's just lay it all out here. The start 5 should look like this:

PG: Tyrone Wallace
SG: Buddy Heild
SF: Tre Fletcher (don't scratch your head on this one, we don't have a ton of shots to go around so we need our best SF defender starting here)
PF: Wes Gordon (see SF notes)
C: Josh Scott

and our backups
PG: Dom Collier
SG: Josh Fortune
SF: George King
PF: Bennie Boatwright
C: Thomas Welsh

I don't know why Tad couldn't close the deal with all of these guys. We should fire Tad today, or maybe wait until after the season, no reason to waste a top 20 RPI and a 12-3 start.

Dorsey and Perkins redshirting?

And there you go. The Utah loss illustrated all the deficiencies that you guys blew me up for mentioning.
