Who is left with basketball recruiting?

Rare poster who follows every day nonetheless. Now that the disappointment of Froling is setting in, and having whiffed on all of the other bigs, what is the plan and next step for Tad? I really wish XJ would come back next year, but I think he wants to play and get paid. If that leaves two spots what do we do with them? Having read through Buffnik's thread on leftover bigs it seems that CU is down to these... Options:

* Dallas Walton - I really think this is almost a no-brainer, but maybe Tad and Co. aren't comfortable with him or don't think he can help. He's a skilled 7-footer with an injury history that needs to get bigger and stronger, but he's not going to play next year anyway if he comes here. That gives him a full year to acclimate, get stronger and hopefully healthier.

* Antun Maricevics - Obviously a sleeper and was off the radar until this year, but he almost falls into the category of Walton other than he has a D1 body already. He likely won't play early and would have to acclimate and continue to develop, but if a second spot opens up I would almost think they would have to take a flyer on the kid based on potential alone. He can shoot and seems to be pretty skilled, but at the level he's playing does anyone really know how good he can be. My worst fear is that CU doesn't get in on him and he's able to carry his performance over at a higher level of competition.

* Alpha Diallo - I really don't know if CU is even in on him or what his interest would be, but he's a perfect player for Tad and the system. There seems to be a lot of competition now that he's blown up some, but even though CU really needs a big you would have to take him if there was mutual interest. He's not going to help solve our big problem (unless he grows another 4-5 inches), but would make us better and more athletic.

If one spot is open I would have to try and get commitments from Diallo first, then Walton and finally Maricevics. Is there anything else I'm missing or do we just play four guards next year and put all of our eggs into getting a quality big next year? Do you guys think either of the two bigs above can play at this level?

That pretty well sums up the local residents or in the case of Diallo former residents. I know Whelan is a huge fan of Diallo's game. I havent crossed everyone of the list but we had a thread on available bigs floating around a month or so ago.

I would think with the talent coming back next year that Tad might go after a grad transfer big man that can take them to the sweet 16.

I dont think he's on his radar and it would be perfectly acceptable if Diallo's attitude to Colorado was "**** that whole state & all the people in it" but I'd still be happiest with him over basically anyone left on the board or over froling.

I love Diallo, but agree with Abs in that his attitude may be "**** everyone in that state" at this point. And wouldn't blame him. He's easily my #1 choice.

I'm hesitant on the other two, but that's also because I'm paranoid. Getting someone just because they're a big or have a D1 body isn't a good idea. It leads to wasted scholarships more than rotation players.

[jokes] Can we get Chiaverini to recruit basketball for CU as well? [/jokes]

[serious] I think we are fine next year running a 4 guard lineup, especially with Wes's interior Defense rounding into form. I wouldn't mind seeing us go after a high-upside development big. What's the worse case scenario, a player like fan favorite Ben Mills? [/serious]

I agree. Unless something unexpected happens, it's unlikely there is a big out there that will help next season. I'm good with Walton or someone like that at this point.

And yes, Ben Mills is the worst that could happen, but that would be very bad. Tad can't afford to waste scholarships like thay any longer. The bar has been raised since 2011.

I've thought about my post a little bit more and you're right. Guz may already be filling that Ben Mills slot, and we certainly can't afford to have two. At the same time, we are running out of options fast.

I don't see Walton as a Ben Mills type. Sure he needs to put on a little weight but he is far more athletic and probably more skilled. Ben was never going to be able to defend P5 bigs. With Walton the concern is can he stay healthy? I want to trust CU's sports medicine, but two knee injuries back-to-back is a scary prospect.

If he can't stay healthy you could medically retire him....

I have a hard time even contemplating who the options may be. The basketball recruits under Tad always seem to come out of left field. Obviously there are the Dom's, Dorsey's, and Davis' who everyone knows we are recruiting, but most of the guys we actually get are first introduced to us when they commit. So I hate it but I will have to just put it out of my mind until we sign someone out of nowhere who ends up being better than people expect. #RollTad

I'd like to see top 75 recruits coming to Boulder like everyone else but, the team is mostly set for next yr. There's like a gazillion transfers every year & the trend only seems to be growing. With the trajectory this program is on, I would rather see a legit transfer come in to give us another push at a Sweet 16. Make a deep run in March & then Tad will win battles for the young studs. No more reaches, please.

Maybe Tad can fine one of them Euro guys we've never heard of. Boris Chuchinski, a 7'-3", 390 lb center from Latvia or something.

What about Lucas Siewert? Is he off the board?
It would appear he's still available. I don't have a sub on Rivals, so I can't say for sure what the state of his recruitment looks like.

Would also like to point out, if we are recruiting Alpha Diallo, he's got a 6'9" 4* teammate who also doesn't seem to have a whole lot going on with his recruitment.

I'd love this. Type of player we need. Would pair so well with Walton. And it's also more inroads to CA recruiting. Peters & Siewert would be a big year there.

It leads you to believe XJ is not returning if we're going after another in the 2016 class

Most definitive proof yet.

We need LA kids like LA needs water

Courtside Films is claiming that Siewert's final 3 are CU, Wash St, & Creighton

If, as some reports have it, he can score both in the low past as well as facing up from distance he should be a priority target.

Boy would I like to see XJ back next season and starting at the 4. This is even more so if Walton is going to redshirt. And on top of this, I am not sure that Guzonjic is going to develop into anything more than someone who will be parked on the pine.

There's a 6'6" kid from tiny Leroy, Il. who's blowing up. Averages 29/9/4 assists, 2.5 steals and 2.5 blocks. Leroy is just S of Bloomington.

Anyway, Larry K noticed him from Provo and offered. Freak athlete, great shooter. Class of '16. Worth a look.

Oh. His name is Matt Chastain.

Yes. He has offers from both Utah and Utah St. Kind of strange. Illinois St offered yesterday, and he has several other MVC offers. Illinois and Wisconsin just became aware of him, and will have a coaches at his champioship (1A) game tomorrow. I'd hate to see Utah sneak him out of there.

I was thinking perhaps the kid attended a camp in Provo or something... Given that Larry K would be run over by a truck if he was in Provo for anything other than a home game vs the arch-enemy BYU team!

Took a trip to LeRoy to talk with the boys about the program's first-ever trip to state. They treated me to an impromptu dunk contest. Check it out! More with the team Thursday on the news

Matt Chastain (#12) with some pretty amazing dunks.

Oh, crap. the video is at the bottom of the page below.
