LA. Governor stated last night that due to extreme budget issues facing Louisiana that state schools would not be able to meet payroll, which would cause spring semester students to be forced to take incompletes. That would result in all LSU student athletes being ineligible for the fall. I.E. no LSU football. Probably all grandstanding but the Gov got the attention of the entire state. If he just said teachers/professors would lose their salary nobody would have blinked.

Pretty interesting. This sort of thing will occur more often.

Pretty funny though:
Guv: "We'll have to close campuses."
Joe Public: "Whatever."
Guv: "We'll have to raise tuition."
Joe Public: "My kids ain't goin' to college."
Guv: "Students won't be able to earn degrees."
Joe Public: "Tell someone who gives a ****."
Guv: "We'll have to shut down football next season."
Joe Public: "HOLY ****! WHAT THE ****?! NO FOOTBALL? GOOD GOD ALMIGHTY YOU CAINT CANCEL FOOTBALL!!!"

This isn't good for any of us. Some half witted anti-athletics crusader will undoubtedly point to this as a reason to do away with college athletics. Forget the fact that the LSU football program is probably one of the few things that turns a profit at that University. (I'm assuming it turns a profit. It's in the SEC, it has to turn a profit, right?)

It is situations like this that force schools to drop the non-revenue sports. If I'm on the any of the swim/dive, tennis, gymnastics and depending on Title VIII softball team I'm worried about my scholarship.

Dunno....those recruit car payments and HGH drugs are darned expensive!

Yikes. $940 million deficit for this year. $2 billion budget shortfall for next year. Jindal and previous gov Blanco cut a bunch of taxes because O&G was going thru the roof. Now they're getting crushed like Venezuela, Chile, et.al. Oops.

Not to get picky, but Chile is a bad example of economic mismanagement with a GDP increase of 1.9% last year and a high economic freedom score. It's South America's bright spot. Too bad Boyd isn't commenting any more. Venezuela is in trouble not because it cut taxes, but because it nationalized industries, chased out investment and instituted massive price controls. Louisiana has a long history of mismanagement. A shortfall is no surprise. For public safety's sake, the LSU football gladiators will calm the masses come fall. No politician will risk a riot.

I thought tax cuts always resulted in more government revenue :ROFLMAO:

Not sure if you are serious but $25 oil kills areas that depend on oil and gas revenues and jobs.
I understand...not really serious...just making a joke about the stupidity of those who like to claim a reduction in taxes always results in an increase in tax revenue (like I'm assuming Jindal would). The price of oil is the main culprit, but cutting O&G taxes didn't help either.

I'm like 90% sure that I saw a report in the last 5 years where LSU specifically showed the budget math and how much the football program contributed to the general budget. It was a sizable chunk of change.

I also remember that more than one AD was pissed off about it, because their departments, uh, weren't exactly revenue positive...

The gov that did the first cut was a democrat. Though she had an R legislator. She implemented a massive spending increase and gave all state employees a raise when the revenue boat was floating on high tide. Oops.

I think they're now changing this, but LSU has been extremely cheap to attend, which is part of the mix that led to this mess. Their TOPS program for instate students basically took care of tuition, and it only required a 3.0 gpa to qualify . There were other programs for just being kids of alums, and waiving extra out of state tuition costs was not difficult.

Doesn't Georgia have a similar tuition program?
