Discussion of Next Year/XJ's Decision

Peter's is showing he can't be stopped against quality/top HS opposition. He should be a top 100 recruit. Tad may have found the steal of steals. I'm glad we got the commitment in ink. I'm not going to be suprised if he starts next year.

I like Peters more and more as I see his senior highlights. I would just like to say that the line between top 100 and 150 is broad and fuzzy. I'm just glad that he's developing.

With that said, I will be very disappointed in our returning players if Peters starts next year. I hope he can contribute several minutes a game, and that's it. I guess the optimistic way of seeing Peters starting next year is that he's a crazy exceptional talent when he steps on campus, but to me, if he starts, that says some negative things about our wing players...you cannot let a developing freshman take your minutes so easily...

If you are one of the blue-blood programs what you say about incoming freshman would be true but we aren't close to that level.

If he starts next season it won't mean he is the best player on the team as a freshman, only that he is one of the top five. If he is truly a top 100 kind of talent then he should be in contention to start from day one.

It isn't unusual for the top 20 type teams to have freshman come in and start right away. Of course they are recruiting one and done types but the guys who make up the rest of their roster are usually top 100 or better.

The fact that basketball has the one and done guys also points to the fact that kids can develop both physically and otherwise to compete earlier.

Spencer started over Levi as a freshman (and everyone questioned it - thought he was horrible the first third of the season).

I could see Peters starting. In fact, it wouldn't shock me if Peters & White was next year's starting backcourt.

Peters is a higher end talent than Dom for sure. If Peters starts at the point, that's a very good sign for the team.

As for White, we'll still have King, Fortune, and Fletcher available for minutes. I guess Its a good problem to have, having a much anticipated freshman and transfer joining an already good back court.

Not really sure what you're getting at or perhaps I'm not making my point well. No, being a blue blood program has nothing to do with what I'm trying to say. All programs would love to get kids that can start for them from day 1, which you say. This is with respect to a guy that is a top 150ish recruit. Even if he's a top 100 player, NO, he should not be starting for us. Top 25 kids should be probably be starting for us, but our talent level should (and is in my opinion) be good enough to have top 100 kids just be bench contributors as freshmen. A top 150 kid should not beat out another top 150 kid (Dom) that has two years of college experience.

Yes, but that's not a good comparison in my opinion. Levi was very limited with what he could do on the floor. Sure, I liked Levi too, but he was limited athletically, handle wise, passing wise, etc. The talent on Levi's teams also is not as strong as what we have now. They were very different players to me.

I am very interested to see what White brings to the court.

I can agree that Peters has a higher end than Dom. I know you're not explicitly saying it (even if you do believe it - I don't know), but Dom is not unathletic. He does have athleticism; maybe not Westbrook-esque, but still solid D1 athlete. While we're on this Bryce love fest, let's not discount Dom's base talent. He just needs to put it all together, and I have high hopes he will. Two years of college experience, as well as physical maturation, should make Dom keep his starting role next year. I really like Bryce, but if he beats out Dom...to me that says a lot of negative things about Dom. Granted they're highlight reels, but I just don't see enough from Bryce to make me excited about him coming in and winning the starting role as a frosh.

With all that said...not trying to get this thread on a different topic. I am excited about Peters.

If Peters gives us the best chance to win/score more points, gotta start him.

...you know...thought about my post while I stepped away to do some stuff...

I now disagree with a lot of things I wrote in response to three of you. One, in the spirit of debate, I was drastically undervaluing the talent during the Levi years. I do think our talent has increased from top to bottom, but very strong (if not convincing) argument can be made that they were more talented than now. Two, have no clue why I kept thinking this battle is between Bryce and Dom...lazy thinking on my part. I like Fortune, and definitely still hope that our upperclassmen push Peters to contributing solid mins off the BENCH. But...Peters does provide some good options with Dom...so very well could start.

Having been a Buff fan in the years that we hoped Iowa State and Nebraska sucked enough that we didn't end up in the conference basement . . .again . . . these are nice conversations to have.

I was just about to post something about your previous comment before I saw this.

Levi's team has better talent for sure, just less depth. The only person in this team with similar athleticism is Wesley. And the only two players in this team could start for that team would be Josh and Wesley.

I will take Alec and Cory over any of the guard/wing players on this roster any day. Any day.

All true but different situation.

Alec did what Peters is doing now only two years later. Coming out of high school he was in the middle of the heart of Big XII basketball country and nobody wanted him except CU. He was 6'2" and skinny.

It wasn't until after CU signed him that he started to grow and fill out growing into an NBA body.

It happens at different times for different guys, just looks like this time it happened perfectly for us. Had this maturing happened one year earlier Peters would have been a priority for a bunch of schools.

Do you mean Burks? I think Spencer was a freshman the year after Levi graduated.

Excited about Peters!

I could see Dom, White & Peters starting. Wes at the 5 and a free for all for the last spot.

I know nothing, but I can't see any way XJ is back next year.

I heard his father quoted as saying "Xavier needs a plan B." I think that he meant getting a good college degree because making it as a pro in basketball can be problematic on many levels. So, if he stays, I think that will be the reason. I hope that he is successful regardless.

He should be graduating in May.

He should be graduating in May.

I had thought he was.

Coming back next year isn't going to improve him in the eyes of the NBA.

Get the diploma, do the NBA summer circuit, and go make some solid money in Europe. If he is close to healthy he should be good enough to secure a roster spot in one of the upper division leagues in Europe.

He can bank a nice amount of money and maybe prove to the NBA that he is good enough to get another look. If not he will still have a nice nest egg and a degree to work with.

Every person I know who knows more about basketball than I do is convinced XJ is gone. So I expect him to be back next year.

P.S. A bunch of this should get pruned from a recruit thread and moved to the "XJ leaving?" Thread. I'd do it, but on phone.

Seriously? I can think of a lot of reasons. At least it's good to see him on the bench cheering for his team.

Here is one consideration. Rightly or wrongly, CU will be downplayed next season because we lose Staltzer. OK, that was a joke. But we will be downplayed and, I'd bet, not expected to make the tournament. What if XJ were to return and help lead this team to success? His stock would go up, wouldn't it?

Everybody says XJ hates going to class----but, man, if I was him, I'd load up a fall schedule with every grad Lit class offered, since they're full of young women and then show the League I've recovered on the court for the Buffs. Right now, if he leaves, he's gonna being chasing chump change all summer without any guarantees or solid base of support for his rehab and conditioning coming back from a tough injury. Can he even show he can walk across the court without limping, let alone run and jump for the pro game in Israel, let alone Europe?

Spencer had an NBA contract in hand, with all the rehab and conditioning support that implied for his knee. XJ has nothing right now, for a far more serious injury, except CU! Something is better than nothing in my book.

He's gone.

Mostly I feel bad for XJ. It's a bad bit of luck to be injured your senior year. He'll graduate in May and get a chance to live his dream.

Why is everyone assuming that he is gone? I see more benefit in him coming back for another year, hopefully feature on an improved team and catch the attention of some NBA teams who haven't seen him play for a year. I think we agree that he has the body / potential to play in the NBA so why not come back and try to snag a second round grade or invite to summer league? I highly doubt his dream is to play in Europe and that seems like a round about way to ultimately get to the NBA. He's only 22? and still young. Is a year's salary really that big of an issue if he truly wants to play in the NBA? The "XJ doesn't like school" narrative seems like a pretty weak reason... No one likes school and I'm sure his course load would be pretty light as a fifth year non-chemical engineer

Hopefully XJ consults allbuffs before making a decision he may regret for the rest of his life.

PS. I like Bryce Peters a lot.

He'll get offers from European teams. That's a given. To assume otherwise is to flat out lie in order to further an agenda.
