Hey Tad

Well said. Up 15 with 9 to play and i knew we would lose this game, in fact even said it. Unreal. Go Buffs
Yep I said the same thing. Except I said we need to take a TO when SC started to make a run. Too bad it didn't happen til SC gained the lead after a 15 point deficit.

Tad saying in the post game that he should have taken a couple time outs ... That's the equivalent of one of the players saying, "yeah, I probably should have tied my shoes." Or "I should have dribbled the ball."

Calling a TO to try to stop a run is table stakes in coaching. I coached my third grade son's team and the moms in the stands knew when it was time to call TO.

Maddening since it's obvious these guys haven't figured it out after the 27th game of the season. Gee maybe next game they will, shucks.

I don't watch much of the games but dabble in these threads to keep up with what's going on, and complaints about Tad not calling TOs seem to be a common theme in just about every game thread.

Tad slips into bad habits from last year I think. He tries to let his guys just figure it out on their own too often. Against a team as athletic as USC, you cannot just let your guys figure it out. USC can score too fast.

Especially when a win would have all but guaranteed a tourney invite. Would have needed to beat ASU and they'd have been a lock. Can't just let the players 'figure it out on their own' because you think they're mature enough when something big is on the line like that.

I agree. I think its a bad habit he got into when The Mayor was here, because he could settle the team on his own. He didn't need coach to do it. We don't have that kind of player right now.

Corey, Nate, then Spencer. Tad is a better coach when he's got mature guard play. Funny how that works.

Obviously the good guard play covers a lot of things. I think it has a lot to do with the types of leaders he had on the court though. Josh is no doubt the leader of the team on and off the court, but he isn't the PG. I think that makes a huge difference. I was really hoping Dom would start emerging in that role, but I don't think it will.

The problem is, even when he does call a timeout, nothing ever really changes. There is never a play that is drawn up, there is never a change in scheme, nothing. How many times have we seen CU come out of a timeout with a big offensive possession upcoming and we simply pass the ball around the perimeter until there's less tha 5 seconds on the shot clock and we have to hoist up a terrible shot?

Not saying we clearly shouldn't have called a TO, but with Tad's in-game coaching skills, who's to say it even would've made a freaking difference?

Dom is a Soph - the only one who really dominated in that role at this age was Spencer, he had the talent but more than that all the charisma in the world. Josh doesn't have the "it" factor Spencer had where he could simultaneously dominate and lead the locker-room while also being the lead cause of many issues. That is a rare personality. What happens last night was a young guard on the road failing. Tad could have, should have helped, but we all knew an undefeated at home, ranked USC team was going to make a run, the bigger issue is that we (like auburn when we played them) didnt answer.

Hard to disagree with that. There's simply no excuse anymore as to why we look so inept against the zone. We've seen it enough this year. The other coaches know it gives us fits late in games, so this won't be the last time. Tad and co. need to fix this in practice, or we'll be in trouble.

The point guard doesn't design and implement the zone offense. The point guard doesn't call time outs. Our guard play was awful last night, but they were still in position to win despite our guards turning it over at a high rate. This is the part where I say I expect this from Tad coached teams, and some users jump on with some numbers and say that Tad is good in close games. Worst college hoops team in recent memory when it comes to playing with a lead in the last 5 minutes of the game. When they win these type of games, its because a player does something extraordinary. Can't say I remember the last time Tad made a move from a x's and o's that made a difference down the stretch, like Enfield switching to that zone late last night. Not saying I think Tad should be fired, but I'd hope he would start to learn from these late game collapses whether they're wins or losses. Most troubling thing I saw last night outside of the inability to make adjustments was Dom Collier's body language/effort/play.

I'm so disgusted. This 2nd half meldtown has happened so many times. And the culprit is almost always the same.
Turnovers
Clueless vs a zone

There is no excuse for it after it happened once or twice before.
Why should I show up at CEC anymore, this is disgusting.

TO rate under Tad:
2106: 19.8
2015: 19.9
2014: 19.7
2013: 19.9
2012: 19.5
2011: 16.9

Nate's TO % was actually worse than anybody we have here now. Alec and Cory were amazing in 2011 at 14.8 and 15.1 respectively, but that was their first year in Tad's "system". He could have probably "coached" that out of them.

I guess what I am saying is that Tad can talk all he wants about valuing possessions, but his teams just don't. Unfortunately, I think this is something we need to get used to under Tad.

Ugly offense, good, tough defense and rebounding most of the time. A good recipe for 20 wins and early tournament exits.

That's where we are now and I don't see much changing.

Edit: I should also point out that the 2011 team was not good defensively and went to the NIT, just in case anyone is reading this as me saying that Tad is a bad coach or that his aporoach doesn't work.

People seem to forget that in 2014 CU was #15 in the country and had the kind of team that makes deep runs in the tournament. Elite PG's change everything and we simply don't have one right now.

Fantastic Post!!!

CU has always had decent, to good, to great PG's. Law, Billups, Coleman, Walls, Winston, Hall, Dinwiddie, This is by far the worst collection CU has fielded since I've followed them. Here are some quick observations:

- Dom tries to be a PG but is too slow to drive and create for others, plus he's a liability on defense. He looked shook last night. He should be the calming presence on this team, but he can barely dribble the ball now a days. If I were Tad, when he started out with the two turnovers, he would've sat the rest of the game. Even if I had to play Eli or a walk-on. Dom's mind isn't in it, doesn't want it, and can't get it. I'm willing to wager that Peters is our starting PG next year.

- Thomas Akyazili is young and proving to be somewhat out of control, I think he gets better in time. He at least tries to make plays. He froze up last night in crunch time. He's just not ready.

- For anything Talton does good on the floor, he makes up for it with bad. He essentially cancels himself out on the floor, so he is a non-factor. How the hell do you get pick pocketed, run down the floor side by side with the player and not foul him before he posterizes your arse!!!

That last 8 mins was the worst Div 1 basketball I've seen. It was like our Guards and Wings couldn't play anymore. Like the Monstars stole their talent. We we're throwing the ball right into the other teams hands for easy fast breaks, LOL! The coaches couldn't draw up a play against the 2-3 zone, and the team was shook. Simply Embarrassing.

Tad has to make some adjustments to ensure these end of the game lapses don't occur anymore and the players need to stop folding in the final minutes, need some toughness.

...on the bright side of things...I guess it's a good sign to see the fan meltdowns typically on our football boards occurring on basketball boards. We have come a long way, and that's a good thing. Now...about those meltdowns... ... ...

Who recruited these players? Tad completely F'd up with Salzer and Talton...he only has himself to blame. His guard recruiting since Spencer has been horrid.... and his offenseive strategy in tight games is a joke.....dribble and pass around the perimeter then throw up a prayer....
