Can´t fault him for wanting to bring in his own guy. They let an interim AD hire a coach and give him a 2 year contract (!).

I mean, it´s not unprecedented. I remember a school from the Rocky Mountain region, let´s name it Doloraco, that let an AD, let´s name him Bike Mohn, hire a football coach just a few months before he was encouraged to resign.

I was more talking about the timing.

Yeah, and I just remembered the whole Bohn thing and how we let an outgoing AD hire a football coach.
I just hope he has a replacement lined up because if he doesn't then he should have waited until the end of the season.

Agreed. Would give him time to evaluate and hand pick his new guy. If the guy he chooses now is a failure this year, he'll be under scrutiny right off he bat.

Leslie Frazier, PJ Fleck, and Bo Pelini among the coaches rumored as potential replacements.

That is a bush league move.

The last couple years has been very strange, from Beckman and Cubit being restrained on the sidelines from going after each other, to Cubit coming back the following year like there was no bad blood or Beckman knew he was dead man walking and couldn't get a better coordinator, to last year's up-and-down under Cubit as Beckman was suddenly fired right before the season. Now Cubit is retained after the season largely because of the AD being in flux and so it seems reasonable that the new AD in place wanted to aim higher. Just sucks for the players and especially the new signees regardless of the "You don't commit to a coach" thing we all throw around. Amazing how stable and promising things look at CU relative to some other P5 football schools. It's a very small victory from where we were not long ago.

TV report last night was that spring practices and game were on hold until a new coach was hired. I thought that was bizarre and very harsh for the players and remaining staff.

If the AD made that decision knowing he was close to hiring a replacement it makes a little more sense, but it doesn't eliminate the quandary the players are in right now.

"Fox Sports reports one reason Lovie Smith was interested in the Illinois job was the possibility of bringing two of his sons, Mikal and Matt, who were on his staff in Tampa. Don't be surprised if Smith retains defensive coordinator Mike Phair, who worked under Smith in Tampa in 2014."

This would explain a lot.

WWRGHD?*

What would Rick George have done?

I don't know about that one, Lovie Smith is a good coach, but Illinois is a hot mess.

He did well at the pro level. Will this translate to the recruiting arena and to being the leader of (technically) unpaid student athletes?

I kinda hope he succeeds and shakes up the conference a bit.
