University of Denver to Hire Rodney Billups as Head Coach

The University of Denver fired their head coach Joe Scott earlier today. ESPN is reporting that DU plans to hire Rodney Billups as their new head coach. Rodney played at DU from 2002 to 2005.

I wasn't expecting Rodney's career to take off so quickly but the move makes a lot of sense for DU. Rodney is about as plugged in to the Denver hoops scene as anybody. I wish people would stop referring to him solely as Chauncey's little brother but maybe this will give him a chance to make a name for himself. He's young, has been a part of a winning organization for several years (CU), and might be able to help DU with recruiting. The move also makes me wonder if CU and DU will start a home and home series in the future.

The University of Denver has a very aggressive Athletic Director. During her time at DU she has already hired a legendary lacrosse coach, Bill Tierney, who won the NCAA championship with DU last year, first team West of North Carolina to win it. She also fired a successful hockey coach, George Gwozdecky, and replaced him with an up-and-comer, Jim Montogomery. The hockey program has remained successful. If the news is true I wish Rodney the best of success and who knows, maybe his path will wander through Boulder again someday.

I don't know if this is the appropriate thread to start speculating on who will be hired to replace Rodney.

Congratulations, Rodney!

That's so great for him.

I wonder if Tad will schedule DU to get Rodney's program a payday & some exposure.

Huge congrats to Rodney. And yes, please, let this be the start of playing DU. Such a waste to have them right down the road and not play

Usually going to be a Top 200 game. Need some of those 150-250 games on the schedule.

Wishing him the best of luck. Was a great assistant for us.

Yep, plus the West has so few D1 programs compared to the dozen + you can find in each eastern state. I'm all for playing all CO teams, but DU does more than NoCo in terms of RPI. The Summit produces some solid teams (as a side note I think DU would be a great fit for the WCC, but at least they're out of that cursed WAC)

Seriously. I don't think too many CU fans would complain if, as part of the 12 non-conference games every year, that we always played UNC, DU, AFA and CSU as 4 of them. Much more interesting than bringing in some SWAC team to fill the schedule.

Yep that fills the different needs of the schedule. Decent top 100ish opponent in CSU, two 150-200 types in AFA/DU, and then NoCo filling one of the couple 250-300 types that everyone has

Shouldn't impact our recruiting at all. If we are recruiting a DU level player we are in big trouble.

That isn't a slam against DU players, to be a D1 player at any school is an accomplishment but there is a huge difference between a PAC12 roster and a WAC/Big Sky/ etc. roster.

It would be good for us though if DU became one of the upper level schools in their league. Having a place to play quality ball close to home for Colorado kids who aren't quite PAC12 level recruits would be good for Colorado HS BB.

As others have mentioned having a quality DU team on the regular schedule would be a big benefit as well. The committee members would simply see it as a win over a top 150-200 program. If we beat them in their house that is a quality road win without having to fly or stay in hotels, a big benefit to us.

Rodney is a quality guy as well. Glad to see him get this chance and would love to see him do well. If he can it also makes CU that much more attractive to assistant coaches looking to build careers.

I think what CN was asking is how important to CU recruiting was RB.

I'm curious about that too.

Probably depends entirely on who they get to replace him. Chauncey and his AAU team aren't suddenly going to start sending kids to DU instead of CU because Rodney is there.

He was huge for getting Dom. Great connections in-state. Good recruiter, but not irreplaceable by any stretch. We can wish him well without stressing this one too much.

Like all good managers, you want your subordinates to get a shot at running things. Congrats to Rodney. Well deserved.

Who refers to him as solely Chauncey's brother?

The headline for the ESPN article I linked to is "Denver Pioneers to hire Chauncey Billups' brother as coach." I get that ESPN is trying to generate clicks, but this is Rodney's moment. He put in the hard work to get the job and he deserves to have his name in the headline for his own achievement.

That just provides context as to who Rodney is. CU bball fans love Rodney.

As an Alum, sounds intriguing. I'll check it out. Program needs a boost, there is potential there.

Congrats RB

It'll be a loss in the short run and a long term gain I believe for the program. If Tad can start a coaching tree we'd have assistant coaches lining up here and that's a positive. One of those biggest assets in having a coach stay long term (as long as they win like Tad) is the ability to recruit up and coming coaches.

Congrats to Rodney. Pretty bush league to only refer to him as Chauncey's brother, disregarding the hard work he has put in to get a HC position.

It's time... actually past time... for Pri to get a HC opportunity. Rohn, too.

We could see significant staff shake-up this offseason.

Is it known that they want to be a HC? Sometimes some guys just don't want to be the boss.

Both havr been finalist for some smaller school jobs in the last few years so they are definitely interested.

Then they should simply say "DU his Billups as head BB coach". They can easily accomplish the same thing without having to put Chauncey in the headline.

This headline could cause confusion since most fans think of Chauncey when they hear the Billups name. Could clarify "DU hires former player Billups as new head coach."
