that there will be a time in the near future that Dan Hawkins and the Buffs "turn the corner." The local sports guys almost all think csu will win this game. The fun thing about this game is the total uncertainty of what will happen. Almost every expert I've heard, including CU's own Chris Fowler, believe CU will be bad this year. My question is, does Dan Hawkins have that special, magic touch? If he does, do you think we will turn the corner this year? Will the csu game be the beginning of the turn around or just another dagger like we experienced 10 times last year? Frankly, this is why I LOVE college football. There are so many unknowns and the unexpected can be expected.

It'll be a show me don't tell me kind of year. I'm guessing it will be that way for the next 2-3 years.

All I can say about it is at the last scrimmage 2 weeks ago the offense looked more organized and more in rhythm than at any time last season. Waaaaaaay more confident. The defense looked a little suspect, but much of the defensive line saw limited time, or just didn't play at all. The team as a whole looked stronger and better conditioned.

Will the above translate into 6 wins and a bowl game? That remains to be seen. I'm starting to get optimistic.

We will turn mid year and finish strong which will carry into next season. '08 good, '09 - watch out B12.

I think it's watch out B12 next year, and watch out nation in '09. But, that's assuming that we improve this year, stay healthy, and continue improving recruiting.

I saw Fowler's comments on CU and was surprised he didn't think they'd do well, particularly on offense. Not that he's ever been a homer, I don't mean that, but I would think he'd be aware of the young talent that CU has at WR and TE to compliment Cody. Sure they're inexperienced freshmen but they've all had good camps in preseason.

My pick for CU is 7 wins so whether or not that's turning the corner depends on one's perspective. I'd say if it ends up being 7 wins, that would definitely be enough to say they're at least starting to turn the corner.

My assessment is you need a QB who has at least one full year of experience (jucos are the exception), an offensive line that has at least 2 years of cohesiveness and is of a higher caliber (2 deep wise) than we are accustomed to these past few years, and a skill position player at WR and RB with some experience. you can throw a few freshmen and rsfreshman in to that mix and compete on the national level.

We are in that instance looking at 2009. We should be competing for the North next year.

Since nobody we play really scares me this year, & depending on how the OOC schedule goes, we could compete this year. I wouldn't be shocked with 8 wins (2-2 OOC 6-2 Big XII) and if the chips fall our way a North Title. We would need a huge breakout year for the offense namely Charles, Williams, Smith, Hawkins.

i am encouraged for the future of CU football without question however its gonna be a few years, IMO to really see the results.

this years schedule is tough for any team in the nation let alone one coming off a 2-10 season with 2/3 of the roster frosh, RS frosh or sophs.

we all know that the bottom line is judged by the wins and losses however, considering what we know about last year and this teams youth across the board we need to be a bit pragmatic about what we look for.

as with most of you, i am looking for a 5-7 win season as a positive step foreward for the program. i also believe that we may again be looking at a 2-4 win season. not good. not good at all.

however, if i see a season on the lower end of whats above, with marked improvement in the offence but a lot of freshman mistakes costing CU the game, i will still be very, very encouraged for the future. something on the order of CU not getting waxed by FSU, ASU, OU and just missing two or three plays in the rest of the games to make them winnable or wins.

the D gave CU that oppertunity last year, no question about it but the O was no where to be found.

this year, i dont expect the D to be quite as good. i expect the O to be much better but one that makes lots of young mistakes. those mistakes will likely cost CU some ball games.

now, we see results like last year on the O, a drop in the D. im worried. i dont think that will be the case.

i think we could see anywhere from 3 to 8 wins depending on the development of the O, a few breaks, catching a team napping and a good, consistant D. the lack of depth will really hurt CU in the big games. although FSU and to some extent OU have been a bit down compared to recent years, they still have depth that CU could only dream of.

this is a very young team. we have all been told about the improvement in practice of the team and that is great!!!! im all for it. lets just see it on the field on saturdays now. i am very encouraged for the future of CU football. we will most likely see another year or two of rough seasons as this team matures, gains experience, builds depth with recruiting and most importantly LEARNS how to win.

experience will come! maturity will come. depth depends on recruiting. recruiting depends on the the salesman and what that salesperson has to offer in terms of winning, program status/progression, facilities, winning the family over....la la la, ect!!

i think we need to be patient and pragmatic on our approach to the '07 season.

:gobuffs:

Do you think, recruiting wise, we can afford another 2 to 4 win season? I think we need marked improvement in order to get the recruiting ball rolling. We also need to get into Texas.

depends on the salesman i would think. mac did it with a lot less than what hawk has to work with in terms of facilities, tradition and such. time will tell....

hawk seems to have done fairly well after a 2-10 season.

lets see... I'm thinking 5 wins this year could be a sign of major improvement.

Couple things going against us:
We have a young team with little depth
We have a tough schedule
Our QB has never taken a D1 snap

Couple things going for us:
Hawk the coach
Hawk the QB; he might surprise, but I list him as a con too
Other teams might overlook us
We weren't out of many games last year and our offense is improved; defense down a bit
Team chemistry is high

I am optimistic about the future. This guy (hawk) is a man with a plan. He is executing against the plan every single day. He's lining up a bunch of dominos and they are going to start dropping in a positive way in the near future (year or two).

Hawk has come out and said he expects a bowl bid and bowl victory. That means a minimum of 7 wins this season. I think that if we do that, recruiting will be a lot easier. It's hard to sell a kid on the future when the present is so discouraging.

I have a lot of confidence we'll hit the 7 win mark unless something truly crappy happens (like a rash of injuries).

Apparently, B.G. Brooks had us winning 6 with one of our losses to Iowa State! So now, maybe B.G. will give us 7 wins.

Mac didn't have to deal with Mack Brown, Pete Carroll and Les Miles when he went into Texas, California and Louisana to get players.. Back in the mid-80's, the gap between CU and Texas was not much in terms of fan donations, facilities, etc... Those times have drastically changed..

I'm not confident we are going to beat CSU, but the guys in the media acting like CSU is an easy pick seem to forget CSU is sporting a 7 GAME LOSING STREAK.. They ain't that great..

dont disagree...

While it won't decide the season I think tomorrow will set the tenor.

I think it is as important a game as the Buffs have played in a while.

They need to come out strong and provide some initial evidence that last year was not a glimpse of things to come.
Win tomorrow (and I am confident they will) and I think they set the table to win six or seven games.

As Hawkins regains some recruiting influence (with wins) it only gets better.

I agree with you. Ever since Sonny Lubick arrived at CSU, this game has rarely been an easy pick. I know a lot of people here don't like him, but he has generated some amazing results if you are an old-timer like me who remembers the days when we went 0-12 and a game against CU was a certain loss. But you're certainly right that CSU fans can't claim much about our team. We went downhill in a big way last season; who knows if we're any good now?

I hope CSU wins tomorrow but I think things are shaping up nicely for CU over the next several years. Hawk is a great guy to lead your program and I think he will take you on a long run of very strong seasons. With CSU losing so many players after this year, if we don't win tomorrow, it could be awhile.

Here's to a good game and no injuries.
