I have to admit, when it got 28-17 and we missed the FG after Whealtey's return, I was thinking, my god this season is going to be worse than last year.. Great job by the team battling back..

I would rip Collins, but I beginning to see that we are just awfully slow on defense with the exception of Dizon and Wheatley.. CSU O-line were throwing that defense around for most of the game.. I give him props for keeping the team together in the 4th quarter when we made our comeback..

Helfrich needs to stop with the Wing T formation.. Its cute once, but it gets old.. I would rather them line up in I-formation and run the ball and keep working on that.. And the WR in motion handoff was a little old after the 2nd one.. Flea-Flicker was stupid too. I do think this offense does have some capability.. Little Hawk can get the ball to the receivers.. Need to work on the pass protection a little, especially the RB's blitz assignments.. Little Hawk will get crushed by the big boys if we don't start picking it up..

Special teams looked great.. Wheatley needs to be returning kicks for the rest of the season.. He's better than Charles at it..

well on the "negative" side, our safeties really are tad too slow and our lack of speed and size at lb was really exposed today. that is going to be challenging as we move forward this year. gawd, if we could get sip back, it would be really helpful. and jalil stepping up at safety to replace dykes would be a big speed upgrade.

on the positive side, t-wheat is the real deal. burney got toasted some but they were throwing at him a lot so i thought he held up pretty well. the d-line is for real... hypo and nicolas did an excellent job. we are going to need more off the edge but i expected some growing pains there. i think our DEs will end up being pretty good.

good win, indeed!

I actually liked the Flea-Flicker call- Cody just underthrew and forced the ball into double coverage.

Cody didn't really have a choice. The CSU safety (I think) was in his face and he had to throw it off his back foot. I guess he could have eaten it and taken the sack, but I think trying to give his receiver a chance wasn't a bad decision. If he could have set his feet I think PWill would have had a step on the CB and the safety who picked it off wouldn't have been able to cut under and get the pick.

Coaching grade card
Did CU move the chains on 3rd down?
6-13. In the first half, CU was moving the chains before 3rd down. In the second half, some missed blocking assignments leading to tipped balls and a few pressured passes. The backfield needs to work on blocking and pass protection. Grade: C

Did CU play better than the opponent in the 4th quarter?
Yes. No CSU points in the 4th. CU rallys back to tie the game. The fitness of the team paid dividens, as CU didn't play as gassed as CSU in the final 15 minutes. It was great to see Dizon will the defense to win. Grade: A

Defensive 3-and-out.
One in the 3rd quarter. The CSU punter came out 4 times. Kory Sperry had a heck of a game, and was unstoppable for 3 quarters. Can CU's pass defense get turned up a notch? Grade: D. The offense bailed the defense out for 3 quarters.

Penalties
CU won this category. 4 for 30 yards. Could have been a lot worse with so many freshmen and the season opening game. Nice to see CU keep it's head in the game. For such a young team, a lot more of yellow flags could have been called. Grade: B+

Clock Management
Little Hawk managed to get Eberhart into FG position on the final drives of the 1st and 2nd halves. Although time of posession could have been better for CU, clock management was excellent. Cody's game management couldn't have been better. Grade: A

Final Score: W
CU 31-CSU 28.

It's great to be undeated against state rival. Bouncing back from a 28-17 deficit required poise, skill and some lucky breaks. As opposed to so many games last year, CU found a way to win. It's nice to have that monkey off the Buff's back.

I agree with everything you say. Clearly the S position has been severely neglected the last few years. We just don't have athletes back there. Walters looked ok, but the other S spot is not a strength, and added to the losses at LB, covering TEs is a huge problem.

I would be more generous to Collins and the defensive coaching staff, if not for the fact that the ****ing 3-8 defense returned from whatever level of hell it was spawned by, allowing Mr. Haney to convert a 3rd and 15 and keep a drive alive. It probably showed up more often than that one time I noticed it. This defense looked good when we had penetration and when we had pressure. When we were out they playing tentatively with 3/4 of the personnel 10+ yards downfield, they were picked apart. This is the reason I am still EXTREMELY skeptical that Collins is the man to lead this defense. Far too passive, far too often. :sad2:

Exactly. Cody was actually in the act of throwing, had the arm in motion, when a lammie defender launched himself at Cody. Cody definitely had to unset his feet and was beginning to backpedal when he threw - but if he holds the ball there is serious fumble potential considering where the ball was at that point. The pressure caused a bad underthrow that the lambs were able to pick. A good defensive play, and an excellent lesson in what pressure can do (see paragraph above)...

All in all, great game for both teams and GREAT ****ing win for CU!!!! :gobuffs::woot:
