While evaluating Arizona State’s prospects this season, I keep returning to one immutable law of division physics: Somebody has to finish last — we’re not going to have a six-team tie.

While recent history suggests Colorado will occupy the bottom, I see no reason to believe Arizona State, which went 6-7 last season, is ready for a turnaround.

Quite the opposite, in fact: Teams on downward trajectories with rookie quarterbacks and rebuilt offensive lines are always candidates for cratering.

Coach: Todd Graham
Season: Fifth
Record: 34-19
Win totals by season: 8-10-10-6
Job security: Solid (but check back in three months just to be sure).
Notable: Graham has been the head coach at four different schools, but this is the first time he’s been anywhere for Year Five.

Here we go …

Sept. 3: vs. Northern Arizona
Result: Win
Record: 1-0
Comment: For one week, all is well.

Sept. 10: vs. Texas Tech
Result: Loss
Record: 1-1
Comment: The overhauled pieces aren’t quite ready for a mid-level Big 12 opponent with a veteran QB.

Sept. 16: at UTSA (Friday)
Result: Win
Record 2-1
Comment: Tougher-than-it-looks assignment with Friday roadie against easy-to-overlook opponent. But Devils grind their way to a close victory.

Sept. 24: vs. Cal
Result: Loss
Record: 2-2/0-1
Comment: The game that makes it clear it will be a long year for the Sun Devils.

Oct. 1: at USC
Result: Loss
Record: 2-3/0-2
Comment: The season takes a turn for the ugly.

Oct. 8: vs. UCLA
Result: Loss
Record: 2-4/0-3
Comment: Devils dig deep, play well and push the Bruins to the brink. But it’s not enough.

Oct. 15: at Colorado
Result: Win
Record: 3-4/1-3
Comment: Losing streak ends just in time for another to begin.

Oct. 22: vs. Washington State
Result: Loss
Record: 3-5/1-4
Comment: Two years ago, the Cougars won three games and the Devils won 10. My, how the arcs have changed.

Oct. 29: at Oregon
Result: Loss
Record: 3-6/1-5
Comment: Not as exciting, controversial or high scoring as last year. But the result is the same.

Nov. 5: Bye
Comment: Respite comes too late to reframe the season.

Nov. 10: at Utah (Thursday)
Result: Loss
Record: 3-7/1-6
Comment: If ASU fans haven’t already started grumbling about Graham’s early success coming with Dennis Erickson’s players, they will now.

Nov. 19: at Washington
Result: Loss
Record: 3-8/1-7
Comment: Wipeout.

Nov. 25: at Arizona (Friday)
Result: Loss
Record: 3-9/1-8
Comment: Home team has won the past three Territorial Cups. Make it four. Devils AD Ray Anderson declines to comment on Graham’s job security.

Coming Friday: The Oregon schools.

I like our chances against ASU, however their weakness is their secondary tends to give up a ton of big plays. Unfortunately, that's something our passing game has struggled with.

I like our chances this year against both Arizona schools.

ASU is going to come in here thinking the game will be easy. They'll be wrong.

I hope.

I want to see us beat ASU and then have HCMM do a post game interview on the sideline where he says just what Graham said, "we dominated a team we were supposed to dominate." **** you Todd Graham!

Got to be careful. We want Graham to keep his job as long as possible. ;)
