BOULDER — Sometimes a grassroots initiative builds some real momentum quickly, as is the case this week with University of Colorado students starting a drive for everyone to wear black this Saturday night when the Buffaloes host Florida State in an 8:10 p.m. kickoff at Folsom Field.

The “Blackout” as it has been named has been extremely popular with students this week through a variety of communications, from text messaging to popular student websites. They asked the athletic department for support of their drive, and athletic director Mike Bohn agreed Thursday.

“We recognize that the student body is the heartbeat of our program, and if they have expressed a desire to do this, we want to support them,” Bohn said. “This does not change our position through the years of asking everyone to wear gold, but for this game, we would like to ask the rest of the fan base to join in the students in what they are attempting to create by wearing black.”

Bohn also is encouraging all to be in Folsom Field in time for the 8 p.m. kickoff, as ESPN is televising the game nationally. “It’s exciting for the team to take the field to a full house when they charge out behind Ralphie, as there’s not a better sight in college football. It would be great to have the place packed well before kickoff.”

The football players will don all black uniforms for the game, the 33rd time it will do so; the Buffaloes are 3-0 against non-league opponents when wearing all black, and are 18-13-1 overall. The Buffs most recently wore the look in CU’s 31-28 overtime win over Colorado State on opening weekend.

Other pregame festivities include the inaugural “Buffalo Round-Up,” where fans are asked to be part of a human tunnel to welcome the football team as the players arrive at Folsom Field. The tunnel will form east of Duane Physics (near Libby Hall off of Colorado Avenue) at 5:30 p.m. and will extend to the gates of Folsom Field. ESPN will cover the event for broadcast during the game.

CU’s live buffalo mascot Ralphie will also be on hand in the lawn area behind Duane Physics for fans to visit.

After the Round-Up, there will be a Herd pregame tailgate on the Benson Earth Sciences lawn. The tailgate will kick off at 5:30 p.m. and includes live entertainment, activities and free pizza for students. Starting when the gates open at 6 p.m., the Heisman Trophy will be on display in the Nike Tent located in the Balch Fieldhouse for viewing.

Some students were interviewed as well on KOA and it will be playing tomorrow morning and hopefully saturday morning.

well the student section (the ones who participated in the blackout) looks good. everyone else sucks

I thought this was a novel idea then saw that Maryland was doing it tonight. So is this some kind of national movement or something? Don't get me wrong, It looks cool in the Maryland game. But it kind of bums me out that it wasn't "our" idea.

Louisville did it last season v WVU and having the fans dressed in color X ain´t such a novel idea anyway.

I think South Carolina has also done it in the past, but that may have been quite a few years ago, maybe even back when Holtz was there.

It does look better than I thought, I was sure how well it would show up with the game being at night.

it pisses me off when teams who don't have black in their color scheme do it.

like ****ing nebraskas blackshirts and when ksu did it for basketball, **** those bitches

I remember watching that game and going what the hell is the deal with the stadium? I thought it looked pretty cool.

Carolina,

I have that same helmet sitting in my office (the one in your avatar). Very cool version and I would love to see the team break them out for a second game. All black uniforms and black helmets with silver buffalo.

South Carolina was doing it in the late 80's and early 90's.. I forgot the coach's name but he was the one before Brad Scott.. He would wear black on the sidelines too kind of like Jerry Glanville did with the Falcons..

i say for the fusker game this year we have a redout.....to drown out or 'blend' out the red clad loons who make it a point to 'take over' opposing stadiums. beat them at their own cornhole game......kind of like 'b rabbit' in 8 mile....lol

So you can buy the black off the shelf? A friend of mine actually made mine for me, he ordered the helmet, facemask and stickers from someplace. He did a great job because it even has the "BUFFS" across the front of the helmet.

That's way before the timeframe I was thinking, but I didn't realize they were doing it way back then. I also think they did it some when Holtz was there.

Ah, I found my black CU hoodie. Not sure how cool its gunna be at 10:00, so I'm taking it. Along with my black CU tee shirt. Yep, you heard it. All I have is a tee shirt and hoodie. Trailer trash, I admit it. Maybe I'll look for a jersey before the game.

I think it'll be pretty cool come halftime, but still pretty nice. The overnight low tomorrow is supposed to be mid 50s

I need to figure out a way to make a CU logo wallpaper for my iPhone...

Snap a picture of the CU logo. Access the photo. Then press the icon on the bottom left corner of the picture (The one with the box and the arrow).

A menu comes up that says "Use As Wallpaper"

Bingo. Your done.

Mine has a CU decal on the back.

When I told Ms. Skidmark about the blackout, she didn't get it.

"The networks are blacking out the CU game?"
"no. Everyone is supposed to wear black."
"The fans won't show up on TV. It's not a funeral, so why show up like you are in mourning. Will they be passing out black pom-poms, too?"

Black out attire for the whole family.

Anyone doing the tomahawk chop in Folsom on Saturday, beware!
