What is Chris Fowler's problem?

I was watching the end of the WVU/Maryland game, and the subject of the Colorado/FSU game got brought up. All of the other announcers were saying that they liked Colorado's chances, and one of them said he had the game selected as his upset pick of the week.

They were all saying positive things about CU, EXCEPT FOR CHRIS! He kept telling them they were wrong when they said CU had a good chance. He seemed to be very negative about CU, what is his problem!? I've never seen an alumni view his school in such a negative light.

have you ever heard of one Rick Reilly? :puke:

My understanding was that Chris Fowler is personally a fan of CU, but he wants to avoid at all costs to be labeled a homer. His persona is not of the emotional type, but the cool host who can analyze anything and keep the show going in the right direction. Being seen as a homer could hurt his career.

That said, he used to completely stay out of conversations involving CU in order to achieve this. A few times I've seen him go overboard negative on CU, maybe to overcompensate? Tonight was one of those. Or maybe what I heard about him is BS and he just doesn't like CU.

I'd tend to agree with your first point. He is just overcompensating to give the appearance of objectivity. I'm sure deep down he is a CU fan.

Thats part of the job he holds. He has to appear to give at least the perception that he is totally unbiased in regards to college football. I can see why he would overcompensate with his own school.

On the other hand, we have no such problem. **** objectivity!

Fowler was to close to Trev Alberts and does not want anyone to accuse him of being a homer. He is a huge CU fan and I have talked to him outside of the studio. He is pretty cool and based on what he said, he would love nothing more than to see CU back on top.

Fowler was having a hard time being objective in 2001 after the Iowa State game. The two weeks before 62-36 you could tell he was trying not to jump out of his skin when anyone suggested that a fusker/okie Big12 championship game was a lock. I think he also talked a little trash to Joey Harrington at a NYC bar after the Heisman presentation. He said as much in the column he used to write on ESPN.com for Gameday. Fowler bleeds black and gold, but he has a job to do as well.

Just because he doesn't believe CU has a chance vs FSU this week, doesn't mean he's not a CU fan.. Fowler has been a strong supporter of CU football and he called in after Hawk talked on the 25 hour college football coverage on ESPN before the LSU/Miss ST and talked about the Buffs... He believes Hawk and his staff have to do it with a lot of smoke and mirrors until they start getting some better players in..

What do you want him to do, be LOU HOLTZ and wave the pom-poms and say CU is going 11-1?

Good to see this thread is definitely on the right track as far as I can tell.

I agree with Fowler trying to be objective, maybe going overboard sometimes. Watch Kirk Herbstriet, he's the same way about Ohio State but seems to get away with things a little easier sometimes because he doesn't run the show, he's there to give strong opinions against Lee Corso.

and does a good job in my opinion

I think Fowler does a great job! That said, dude needs to know what time the CU-FSU game is. DUDE, IT'S ON YOUR NETWORK! He started telling the story about how Bowden was going to have trouble with a noon kickoff since that would be 10am east coast time (which is wrong, it would be 2pm east coast time anyway). It took a producer to remind him that it was a 8pm kick (which is 10pm east coast time) and that Bobby might have trouble staying awake. I'm guessing he'll be plenty awake, because his nightmare will be right in front of him. Buffs win this one!

I was watching College Football Now on NFL Network and they had their two "experts", Mike Mayock and Charles Davis, discussing the FSU-CU game. Both hardly even mentioned CU and just said FSU will win this game, its like CU wasnt even worthy of mention. It ****ing pisses me off and its time for Hawk to finally win a big game and put us back on the map.
Every one here talks about a lack of talent but I dont believe we are any less talented than Boise State was when they were competing and beating the big boys. Hawk has not done anything special since he has been here and needs to step up...I know I am getting a little tired of his long winded philosophical quotes and its going to wear thin on the players too if they dont show significant improvement this year...

I'm starting to feel the same way canbuff. I'm getting a bit antsy for Hawk to show me something. The coaching staff needs to start winning these types of games.

According to Dave Plati, The Sporting News rated different things in the Big XII. They rated CU's coaching staff 11th!! :sad2: Now, I call bull**** on that. I think we have a potentially awesome coaching staff. But if they want to change that perception, winning tomorrow would help a lot. BTW, TSN also rated Ralphie second best mascot to ****ing Bevo. That pretty much blows their cred right there.

all fine and dandy, but then what about guys like lou holtz? there are numerous so called experts or analysts on tv who make absolutely no effort at all to hide their allegiances. ok, granted ... fowler isnt a former pro or coach unlike cheerleaders such as holtz, theisman etc.

I hadn't actually heard that but it makes perfect sense to me.

On a side note, I've always thought that Fowler does a fantastic job on Gameday and on his college football coverage in general.

I'd much rather have a professional/class guy like Fowler on my side than blowhards like Lou Holtz.

Fowler has two different jobs. On Gameday he is not to offer any opinion or analysis. He is the traffic director, the moderator. He may bring up counter points to one of the goof ball's point and pass that point on to the other one to argue in depth.

His job is similar when he calls games as the play by play (he states the facts and lets the color guy do the analysis), but he does have more leeway to give an opinion or do some analysis of other games when they start discussing them during lulls in the games they are calling. I think he goes overboard in not looking like a homer in this role in order to maintain his credibility in his Gameday role. I could be wrong, but that's how I see the situation.

Fouts is a ****ing idiot, ala, Waterboy with Brent Musberger.."wow, did you make that up all by yourself Dan?"

Holy **** are you kidding me, Gannon? Did they ****ing run out of talent to do football games in this state for the weekend?
