College Hotline - Pac-12 Networks: What happens Saturday when games run long

News Junkie

Welcome to what has become an annual Public Service Announcement here on the Hotline.

As many have no doubt realized, the Pac-12 Networks are complicated with the national feed and the regional feeds, the SD and the HD, the basic tier and the sports tier … heck, even the name is confusing.

The Pac-12 Networks (plural) refers to the media company owned by the conference.

The Pac-12 Network (singular) is the media company’s primary broadcasting feed — the national feed, as opposed to the six regional feed.

That’s why the Hotline has always used Pac-12/National when referring to Pac-12 Network, to draw a distinction between the national and regional feeds and between the national feed and the larger media company.

Anyhow …

Pac12Nets confusion often arises during the non-conference portion of the football season, because there are so many games on Saturday and, with overlap and spill-over, it can be difficult to find a specific broadcast.

So here was are again, with our September Pac12Nets PSA: The Hotline’s attempt to help fans find their team.

The issue at hand Saturday is this:

There are four games squeezed into four broadcast windows of three hours each and, as we all know, zero chance that the games will fit neatly into their three-hour windows.

(Lucky for all that Cal is not involved. The next time the Bears are done in three-and-a-half hours will be the first.)

Here’s the lineup:

11 a.m.: Rutgers at Washington
2 p.m.: UC Davis at Oregon
5 p.m.: Eastern Washington at Washington State
8 p.m.: NAU at Arizona State

All of them are on the Pac-12 Network and the relevant regional network.

(Important reminder: In a crucial victory for the conference, the Pac-12 Network — by that, I mean the national feed — has been moved to basic tier on cable carriers within the footprint. The regional feeds are now on a sports tier.)

Know this: The conference does not plan to leave a game before its conclusion, although exceptions could be made — that situation is a bit vague.

How will the conference handle a game that starts before the preceding game ends?

Here’s a two-step explanation:

If Game X runs past three hours, it will continue to be shown on the Pac-12 Network. Game Y will be available, at kickoff, on the relevant regional feed.

Once Game X ends, then Game Y will be shown on the Pac-12 Network (as well as the relevant regional feed).

As you might have guessed, this could cause problems for viewers who:

1) Don’t subscribe to their regional feed, because, again, that’s now on a sports tier.

2) Don’t live in the home market of the team they follow, because in most cases, their local provider won’t have the out-of-market regional feed.

The answers in that situation are:

Wait it out/grit your teeth … or watch the game online through Pac-12 Now and Pac-12.com.

As noted above: When the earlier game ends, the next game will be shown on the Pac-12 Network/national feed.

Got it? Good. Now someone can explain it to me.

(And no, I have nothing new on DirecTV, except to report that “they’re talking.”)

Just checked CU's situation.

Idaho State game is televised on Pac12 Mountain at 3:30PM MT

Utah plays BYU on Fox at 6:30. No network conflict on P12M

But check to see if your provider includes P12Mountain. My carrier only distributes the National feed, P12 Bay Area and P12 Los Angeles.
UCLA and USC will be using the National and their respective regional stations during the CU game

It's likely that I'll have to tune into the Idaho State game streaming from the computer. Bummer.

Are you sure that you can get to the P12 Mountain network via your computer? Because when I try to do that (like for episode #1 of The Rise last week), the web site said that my provider doesn't allow access to that network (only the national feed). Which is weird because if I bring up the guide, I see P12 in HD and non-HD, and then about 6 "Alternate" channels, that never have anything on them. I'm worried that I won't be able to see the game at all, except maybe after the fact if they replay it on the national channel.

I'll have to stream the Idaho State game as well from my computer. As Pac-12 Mountain is not on my cable package. It seems to be working for me.

I just ran a test and am successful.
I accessed Pac12 Mountain using the pac-12.com URL.

I was asked to authenticate by selecting my provider. (UVerse)

I also can get there through the P12 app on my apple devices.

Thanks! I'll do a test before Saturdsy but if it's like when I tried last week, I authenticated with Dish, and I could get to the national feed but not the Mountain feed. Crossing my fingers.

Yes, I'm in the same boat. DISH changed things last spring, and it seems no longer lets you access regionals that you aren't provided in your sat. programming. It is utterly ridiculous. I've called to complain (suggest you do the same), but it is tough to complain as the customer service reps have no idea what you are talking about with this issue, and try to send you to technical support. You need a manager. See http://support.pac-12.com/hc/en-us/...Everywhere-but-now-I-can-t-How-do-I-fix-this-

The very good news is that DISH has so far always put conflicted games for football and men's bb on Alt channels. Looks like this week will be on channel 453.

Still sucks because we used to watch a lot of volleyball and other pac12/mnt programming at least online. I can understand a little not carrying all 6 regionals via sat, but blocking online access drives me crazy. Good to know from the above that ATT still has online access, may cause me to switch.

I also have dish and I used to get the same message and was locked out of everything except the mountain network. I have changed nothing but now I have access to all the pac networks online authenticated thru dish. Don't know how long I've had access to the other networks because I haven't tried. Weird how some of us with dish are getting different levels of access.

Or you could just go to the game.

As much as I'd like to fly almost 1000 miles to attend every game, little things like parenthood and cash flow makes such an endeavor not very practical.
I'll be back to Boulder for 2 games. Idaho State wasn't my first or second choice.

PM me if you have plane tickets or a sweet Boulder job for all of us dedicated out of state fans.
