Buffs have no running game against good teams.... Its tough to be consistent on offense when you are one dimensional..

defense played well. cody had an ok game... not great, but very promising game.

we need athletes. heart and execution only take you so far. had we had more bodies, our Buffs win that game going away. fsu is way more athletic and much faster. our Buffs were more creative and worked harder. guess what won?

i am really glad we didn't get shutout.

still a long way to go...

GO BUFFS!

Losing sucks but I'm still happy with the direction the program is going. Hawkins has had to start from scratch. We will lose a few more this year but things will improve in a year or two. I'll still be here cheering on the buffs.

FSU has more talent but I really didn't see anyone on that team that was crazy fast, especially on offense.. Other than that RB Smith and a better O-line, they aren't much better than us on offense.

dude, you are kidding yourself. CU worked harder, had home field advantage, and i believe the staff called a better game. and still our Buffs got beat solidly.

athletes. i don't know what the definition of crazy fast is, but i know they were bigger, stronger, and faster, overall, than CU.

Really?

yes, really.

there were some head-scratcher calls... but, i'd rather have our staff than theirs on gameday.

look at it this way... if you took recruiting out of the equation (which you can't-- but this is a hypothetical)... and you had a choice between their staff and ours, well, all things being equal, i'd take our staff.

we lost this because we couldn't execute against a bigger, faster, stronger team.

They had what two plays over 30 yards on offense against us?

Did their OL push our thin DL around?

Did we get worn out by their offensive talent?

Other than their DL dominating our OL, not sure where FSU was so much stronger than us..

That QB they have was awful.. Smith, the RB was good, but he had like one run the whole game..

They were what on 3rd down against our defense?

Buffs make those two FG's, I think that game would have gotten much more interesting than it did.

Those players on the FSU offense aren't much better than ours.. You aren't going to be seeing them in the NFL anytime soon.

I guess I'm just tired of seeing these offense and special teams performances game in and game out. The coverage teams on kickoffs/punts looked pretty bad tonight.

And Cody has a ways to go. He absolutely stares down one receiver on every play-it didn't seem like he checked down much at all tonight. And for the love of God, can we please stop with all the out routes? I have a feeling we'll be seeing some pick sixes in the near future if nothing changes.

That was something that concerned me after the CSU game. Could you tell if he was missing open receivers?

I'm also concerned about the speed of our strong safety. I hate to single out players, but I don't know that he has the speed to play that position at this level.

In case you missed it, Lockridge made his debut last night. Unfortunately it is hard to showcase running skills when first contact is made 2yds behind the LOS. :sad1:

I hope that last year's oline recruiting class turns out to be as good as their 5th ranking. It is disheartening after years of watching punishing running teams to be forced into misdirections and end arounds to make yards on the ground.

Also, it would be nice to have some of those giant wideouts. It looked like Carr and Fagg were both about a foot taller than our corners.

once FSU realized we weren't going to be able to block them up front the game changed. However, basically, this was a one score game the way the D stepped up (and Weatherford being pretty mediocre).....the two long drives without points were killers.

and the bad snaps. ugh. talk about killers. too many 3rd and longs even independent of those....and while he moved the ball with quick hitters and rollouts...we spend the 2nd and 3rd Q running slow developing draws and such. ?. and FSU ate that stuff up.

I think I am with a lot of people in saying the speed is killing right now as well. Plus it didn't seem like there was a lot of fire on the offensive side. Defense looked great though. I really think this program is going in the right direction but we need to start winning and turn some heads.

The missed field goals were driving me crazy. We were in that game all night with our D doing an excellent job and our O just couldn't capitalize.

I agree with MBB. I think the staff called a solid game. This was a game of missed opportunities.

The buffs moved the ball at times, but it seems like the would kill themselves with a mistakes. 2 missed field goals, didn't cost us the game, but they are were momentum killers. The bad snaps HAVE TO GET CORRECTED. This has become a common theme and by the 3rd game this should not still be happening.

Our running game is not where it needs to be, but the staff adjusted well to what FSU was doing and took what FSU gave. 300+ yards in the air. It seemed to me FSU came in prepared to stack the line and dare us to beat them through the air. We did a good job of it, until we would get that one mistake that would put is in a third and long.

Defense played very well again this week. They are improving each and every game so far. They looked strong up front and got great penetration. Other than the one breakdown where the FSU RB cut back on the pursuit for a TD, I thought our D did a great job against their run as well.

Losing sucks, but if you look at where this team is this year compared to the same time last year, it is head and shoulder above last years team. We would have never had a 300+ passing game last year. EVER. This team will be ready of the Big 12 this year, and I expect them to surprise some teams.

Here is my 3 cents:

I don't think that more then 5-7 of our players would start in a squad made up of both teams. Our guys that would are Dizon, Wheatly, Hypolite (great game last night) and possibly our tackles. That is not enough horses. That being said, I thought the coaching staff out coached the FSU staff to keep it close. Now its time to recruit...recruit...recruit.

We now have some depth at linebacker when Sipili comes back. Jeff Smart is a player and will be a great backup to have the rest of the season. I was really impressed with him.

Maybe its only cause I know who he is, but J-Fly brings a bit of excitement to the field. He looked good on that bomb, and I can't wait to see him a little more.

We probably get blown out of that game in years past. I really like how hard this team works.

If anyone went to that pregame tunnel thing, did you notice that our main big guys are all freshmen and red-shirt freshmen. Was Barnett recruiting midgets? I thought that FSU looked bigger and more athletic then us in every position. We will never have the athletes across the board like they do, but we need to close the gap to be able to win those type of games.

That was something that concerned me after the CSU game. Could you tell if he was missing open receivers?

I thought he missed open receivers on a few occasions, but I suppose this is what you have to expect with a young QB. He is not getting a lot of help right now from our running game, so I imagine teams are just going to pin their ears back and go after him until we prove we can run the ball on a consistent basis. And as many have already mentioned, the snaps HAVE to get better. We can't afford to lose 10-15 yards at a time on bad snaps.

I would rather have young Cody than Weatherford.

I'll agree with that. Weatherford looked awful. He was consistently throwing behind receivers-I don't think I saw him hit a receiver in stride the entire night.

I think the D looked great; special teams - good punting - field goal misses hurt the mo andthe score. On offense - no running game you become one dimensional - just ask John Elway about that. Cody is not a running threat (like a Jake Locker) at least from what I have seen. He does have alot of dropped balls and missed catches that sometime the receivers have to come up with in a tough game. Put in 1or 2 possesion receivers, Mason and somewhat of a running game (a back or a Q ) and CU beats the crimnoles like a rented mule. But that didn't happen - we lost to a mediocre team.

The scary part is the rest of the B12 is looking prestty good. Onward to next week.

FSU was not that much better than us and the didn't win solidly.

ok, 'leash... you are entitled to your opinion, but, imho...

that was a far superior football team that faced our Buffs. yeah, they've got gaps and they didn't execute that well, but on pure talent, i'd trade most of their starters for our starters in a heartbeat. obviously, dizon, t-wheat, and hypo would make the cut. and you can definitely make a case for hawkins over weatherford, but other than that?

had CU been a little more experienced and had a few more skill guys, i really think the Buffs would have won that game-- it was on the table and ready for the taking. but, teams with less than ideal talent and not enough experience can't win if they make errors against a physically superior team like fsu.

i am still optimistic, however. i think CU should beat miami of ohio and if the Buffs can continue to improve (and they did improve this week), there ought to be at least 4 wins on the table in the b12. thank god the north is weak again. ku, isu (props to their big win over iu, however), and baylor are games CU should win. so, assuming wins over them plus miami, then we only have to find one more win among the other games. it is do-able.

It is very sad to waste a great defensive effort like that. I was especially encouraged by the third down defense. Although I am worried that a lot of that was an illusion because Weatherford is not very good.

As far as offense goes, I was very worried at the beginning of the year that the offensive line was still way behind where they needed to be. There were not enough big bodies up front in spring ball. Unless we see some real progress in the offensive line, the running game will still struggle. I'm not sure if it is just blown assignments or a lack of quickness, but there's a huge problem up front.

Bad snaps in the shotgun scared the living crap out of me. There were several snaps that Cody got where he had to have quick reactions to get them. I think the bad snaps were a result of the pressure and quickness of the FSU DL. If the center is worrying too much about making his block then he won't isn't concentrating enough on the snap.

Were moving in the right direction. I thought wed be a lot better by next year but now I am not so sure. Hard to believe GB left the cupboard so bare. Im thinking well be pretty competetive next year but still lose a couple. 2009 might be our coming out party.

I guess Okruch could recruit. Obviously Watson was a crack smoker.

My main take was this, the D looked good and carried the team and the O struggled. Sound familiar? Just like last year.

With this team being mostly the same players as last year we shouldn't be surprised we are hearing the same story. I will say that the O, overall, is doing a little better than last year and it seems to be mostly a result of the change in personnel on the O side of the ball. Since those changes are mostly young guys that Hawk has brought in to the program in the last 2 years (Geer, Hawk, Mcknight, J-Fly, etc.) I strongly feel Hawkins has us on the right track and just needs more time to work his recruiting magic and bring in the rest of talent needed.

On the bad side:
Run blocking and running backs are underpeforming. Even with the talent gaps in those areas they should be more productive than what we have seen the last two games. They seem to be lacking confidence and that killer instinct which results in them "throwing us for a loss" before the ball is even snapped. This is a critical issue and must get address asap but once it is corrected I believe we will see moderate success (good enough to take pressure off the passing game) in the run game immediately.

On the good side:
Our buffs are playing with a lot of passion and heart. They are hanging in games and scrapping it out to the final whistle and that kind of spirit is really great to see again. It is this that is making up for so many of the talent gaps we have.

I also see a marked improvement in how we match up strength wise this year. We seem much more physical and durable than we have been in 8+ years. A real good indicator of our durability is this: every single offensive snap this year has been played by the same 5 O linemen. Been a very long time since we've had that kind of consistency among the Oline. Now if we can just get them to run block better...
