if sefo is out do we play it safe?...montez might be the future but looked over matched and had the deer in the head lights look...or do we just suck it up and play for the future?

Doesn't matter which one starts. If Sefo doesnt suit up against Oregon, both Montez & Gehrke will get their snaps.

Good question.

Montez has very little game experience and wasn't prepared for the speed of the game. The game plan was built around Sefo and Sefo took almost all the first team reps in practice. This leading to a game against a team with highly athletic and experienced defenders.

Gerhke has been around longer but really doesn't have an advantage in experience or in preparation. He also isn't close to the athlete that Montez is.

If I were a coach making the decision I would take a close look at Montez in practice this week. Does he shake off the frustration of not being able to make things happen or does he dwell on it. If it is still in his head and he is likely to get mentally emotionally stuck then start Gerhke but if Montez bounces back put him out there.

I don't think that the team has a lot of confidence in Gerhke so starting him may tell the team they aren't making the full effort to win.

It continues to be said that Montez looked overwhelmed. I gotta say, that while he looked young, I was dog cussing the play calling when he came in. We started coaching scared and calling absolutely ZERO plays that challenged their defense. I think Montez can look MUCH better if Lingren's balls can be allowed to drop.

I'm praying sefo gets better. Genus our best option right now. He's obviously way better than anybody has thought he would be this year.

The playcalling was the problem? What were they going to call that would have changed what was happening?

Michigan was pressing our receivers, stacking the box, and coming after Montez like bats out of hell and Montez wilted like the RS freshman he is.

Here is to hoping that either:
1. Sefo is fine and returns.
2. The NCAA is liberal in their application of the medical redshirt rules
I doubt Sefo would be out that long but since he's never used his redshirt he would easily get a medical redshirt if he were deemed out for the year seeing as he hasn't played in more than 3 contests/30% of our games this season.

Yes, re-watch the game. They really started doing this after they realized that we weren't going to challenge the middle of the field. CALLED runs on 1st and 2nd down and CALLED bubble screens on 2nd and 3rd and long ain't going to challenge a defense. Sure, there were plays that they called something to gain the necessary yards, but it was reactive and not proactive (I.e.should have been called earlier in the series). That puts a green QB in a very tough spot.

Look, I'm not advocating that Montez is a world beater, but the play calling did him no favors. *for the most part, there were a few good calls

Agree to disagree - they started doing that when Montez started looking like he was panicking.
