WBB General Discussion 16-17

Rather than post on the recruiting thread, which is full of all kinds of discussion, I thought I'd start a new thread that is for general discussions about the program, excluding specifics about recruiting, etc.

Had another wonderful conversation with JR today and also for the first time with Coach T. Also had the chance to meet Jackson - he's an inquisitive young man. This all took place at the indoor football practice facility at an event for season ticket holders for all sports.

Nothing big about the team came up as we chatted about Boulder, etc.

JR did state the strength of the team will be with perimeter players and some of them may need to play inside. Also, the team will need to be disciplined to be successful as they don't have much room for error.

Eleanor Jones is still a few days away from arriving due to the bureaucracy around getting the visa. Not anyone's fault, it just takes time to go through all the steps and then get an interview at the US embassy.

Chatted with Zoe Beard-Fails about her double major, advertising and film. She can't believe her time at CU is almost over. And later with Haley Smith who is majoring in mechanical engineering. Her cap-stone project is going to be working on a seat for the Milwaukee Bucks that keeps the muscles of the players on the bench at the proper temperature to be effective.

Now I'll turn it over to Bebe who was chatting with JR and Coach T as well.

Hope Eleanor's visa issues get straightened out soon. It's a lot of red tape. Not familiar with the student visa, but am familiar with turning the student visa in to a green card after marrying an American. That was a nightmare that took getting our Senator involved to speed things up--like the interview.

Not surprised to hear strength is back court. Swan was by far the best player in the front court last season and she has graduated.

I am quite impressed with Haley's major and project. Wow!

Nice Mark. I don't have much to add since most of our conversation had nothing to do with CU WBB! Hard to believe, I know.

One topic we covered was attendance ... how much higher it was back in the 90's and the coaches said that they know work needs to be done in that area, in addition to getting back to being a consistently strong winning team.

The coaches will be at this weekend's PAC/B1G volleyball challenge with the BB team and (probably) several recruits. Anyone who is available should try to get to those matches. Penn State and Illinois are 2 of the top teams in the country. We don't often get to see top eastern teams here in Boulder. Bigger crowd helps impress recruits!

Practice starts beginning of October. I think I recall JR saying 10/2 but that's a Sunday/ So maybe I remember wrong. When hired she indicated that practices would be open. I didn't ask if she has changed her mind.

I've always liked the wbb team supporting volleyball and vice versa. Seen lots of recruits in the stands over the years because of that.

Yes, do go to the matches and see some of the best teams in the country.

This isn't about this year's team, but this is nice to see. Teammates supporting a great cause.

I have nothing really to add to this, except to say that JR and this staff have made a believer out of me. That is darn quick work to get in some great talent before you've even coached a game here.

In the Buffzone article, it says that in pre-season conditioning, guards had to complete a one mile run in 7 minutes and post players in 7 1/2. Not all made it the first try. JR said "we had a couple of kids that were way far off with that time". Article states that two of the players thought they would not get to that mark but over the last month, they have passed the test.

Has to be a confidence boost to the players and their teammates.

It will be interesting to see how the players react to the new coaches and the coaches adjust to the players skills, motivation, etc.

Thinking about the past two seasons, if CU can just cut down on silly turnovers and prevent dribble penetration they will put themselves in position to win more games than last season.

I am hoping this coaching change will be good for the girls. The four Sophs plus the rsf now hopefully can be given the opportunity/freedom to play. That was a good class last year need to turn em loose.

I don't think we can expect these young women and the coaching staff to take us to the top of the Pac 12. I do expect to see improvement. Also from reading the Buffzone article, JR said that they can't fix 20 things halfway and that she would rather concentrate on 5 things they can fix so they do them well. I bet the silly turnovers are definitely on her list.

The sophomore class does have great talent. I am looking forward to seeing Ariana Freeman and Monica Burich play as well as this year's freshmen.

I have hope for this season that I didn't have last year.

A couple things-
1) Just noticed tomorrow is Pac 12 Media day for WBB. More details at http://pac-12.com/womens-basketball/media-day . The program overall starts at 12:00 Noon MT. Specifically for the Buffs, the above link shows a schedule that includes a Coach Payne interview scheduled to be on at ~12:43 MT, while players
Kennedy Leonard & Lauren Huggins are scheduled on starting at ~1:09 PM MT.

2) Also, good to see that, per http://www.buffzone.com/basketball/ci_30484856/ex-cu-coach-lappe-hired-at-usf, former Coach Lappe has a new job as Assoc. Head Coach at USF (of the San Francisco, not Southern Florida, variety).

Looks like the players that were taken to the Pac 12 Media Day went bowling last night. Some of the video is pretty funny.

Let's hope the Buffs can finish higher than 11th.

Enjoyed watching JR, Lauren Huggins and Kennedy Leonard on Media Day. Looked like all had a good time and #TheRiseIsReal

Just wanted to mention that, per http://www.cubuffs.com/news/2016/10...ive-womens-basketball-media-day-coverage.aspx , today is CU's media day for both women's and men's basketball, with coverage starting in ~15 minutes.

Watched JR's press conference and then Ariana interviewing the players. Let's get this season going!

My tickets finally got here. Maybe Boulder is now using pedestrians to deliver the mail so they don't have more cars on the road?

Except for the two tickets I plan to use, mine are on their way back to Boulder as a donation.
