OU Band After The Game

I noticed that when the game had ended, the camera had shown the OU band and some of them were holding up the "#1" sign, but not everyone was doing it.

Anyone have any idea what that means?

From the OU athletics website

"The OU Chant:

Every fan who wears the official colors, each current student and student-athlete and all OU alumni are encouraged to stand and raise one finger in the air during the playing of the Chant -- a symbolic gesture that shows the greatness of the university and the unity between all Sooners."

Seriously, if you're a history nerd like me and want a laugh, go to the sooners athletics site and look at their definition of what a sooner is.

In my opinion, there's too many hand gestures in college football. We just need the basics:

I thought it was a communal pull my finger gag.....

I figured it was a collective "**** you" to the CU students, fans, players, and especially the refs ... but that being sooners, they held up the wrong finger. :smile2:

"One of the few rules to claiming a lot of land was that all participants were to start at the same time. Those who went too soon were called "Sooners".

As time went on, "Sooner" came to be a synonym of Progressivism. The Sooner was an "energetic individual who travels ahead of the human procession." He was prosperous, ambitious, competent, a "can-do" individual. And Oklahoma was the Sooner State, the land of opportunity, enterprise and economic expansion, very much in the Progressive spirit that engulfed the old South in the 1920s."

Sounds to me like a half-assed attempt to come up with a reason for having one of the most retarded nicknames in sports... THEY ARE WHAT WE THOUGHT THEY WERE, NO GOOD DIRTY LAND THIEVES!!!! LOL

You're forgetting the most important one, "We're Number 1!"

And those curssed Jayhawks would come down from Kansas and steal all of their horses. :smile2:

I went looking for the picture of the OU band/cheer squad after the CU game. There were 3 holding up their finger, and one who wasn't. All looked bitter.

Where did the link go for that picture?

That might be the funniest thing I've read while sober. The Sooner was an "energetic individual who travels ahead of the human procession." I thought they called these bird dawgs!!!

I wouldn't talk to much...you guys have a name and mascot that's not even indigineous to the United States...

American BISON...are not Buffalo. True Buffalo are not found in the US....or the Americas for that matter.

We can't say much either....being the "Cornhuskers" we are actually nowhere near to the number 1 corn producing state...that would be the state that borders us on the east....Iowa.

The buffalo, Bison bison, is the largest mammal on the North American continent. This magnificent creature, which is a member of the Bovidae, or cow family, was given a common name by the early French explorers who called them "les boeufs," meaning oxen. Throughout the years, the name went through several changes from "buffle" to "buffelo" and finally to its present "buffalo." Bison is the correct scientific and common name, but buffalo has been used and accepted for many years. American Indians have also referred to these powerful animals as "tatanka."

The bison has often been described as the most ferocious animal in North America.

From: http://www.nps.gov/archive/thro/tr_buffs.htm

""...its toughness and hardy endurance fitted it to contend with purely natural forces...to resist cold and wintery blasts or the heat of the thirsty summer, to wander away to new pastures, to plunge over the broken ground, and to plow its way through snow drifts or quagmires.""

Theodore Roosevelt

Those with love doll mascots should NEVER be talking smack.

Or a team that used to be called the "Bugeaters"

I guess it could be worse. Both our schools could have "Tigers", "Bears", or "Wildcats" as our mascots. That's just ****ing unoriginal
